All Mark did was preach what the bible teaches in different ways. He didn't give us any arguments or things worth considering. Matt on the other hand delivered exactly what he was supposed to, and if I might add, extremely well formulated. Matt is the voice of logic and reason.
OK great to listen to the debate but, with it being taped from within the audience and the mic is picking up from the audience. The applause about made me deaf since you have to turn it up so far to hear the speakers. Sorry to complain but a little forethought about this debate would have been a good idea.
One of the best Christian v Atheist debate I've seen on Youtube in terms of well reasoned, good humoured and extremely civil behaviour from both parties.
I truly enjoy watching Matt debate, however, if he doesn't insist on a greater level of competition he will never gain national notoriety. Maybe these are just warm ups... :)
@w215philly Matt Dillahunty has mentioned that he wants to debate William Lane Craig, but Craig has refused him. I think Craig will only debate people that he thinks are well known. By participating in debates like this, maybe Matt can raise his profile enough to debate better opponents.
@Skillionaire9 I think the reason for this is; The god christians actually worship and hold so dear is the private personal one they created for themselves in the deepest part of their subconscious. That one guides, protects and understands them in every way possible. Here's the catch; in their mind, he fits so perfectly that they cannot connect the dots when we point out the contradictions of where he surely doesn't fit in the rest of the world therefor invent stories to fill in gaps
Someone asks you to elaborate on the morality surrounding you helping a friend through a marital crisis and you respond with a limerick about kids wanting to watch porn at Christmas or something? Fail much?
@JJPHILLYLG Seems like i'm a month late for the conversation. lol! If you truly want to have a better understanding of how believers think, I'll answer your questions. I'm no longer a thiest but I remember very clearly what I believed and why. Keep in mind that having experienced both sides of the fence, I would not seek to argue very much, but mearly to explain. If you really want to know that is. (but why would you? thats the real question! Seems like you already made up your mind.
When you as a Christian can admit that an atheist can be good or in some cases better than Christians the debate is over. Now it has become a religion of protecting your own ass while realizing that you are worshipping a petty jerk. You believe in God not because you have a good reason but because you are scared not to believe. Quoting William Lane Craig is the same thing as saying I'm entering a contest to see how many logical fallacies I can commit in a given time span.
@JJPHILLYLG So in the Superbowl, during the coin toss, when teamA admits that teamB can beat them, the game is really over. Yet they play it anyways just to get stats and collect there cheques. They don't really care what their loving loyal fans think, they are only scared that the fans wont pay to watch them anymore if they stop after the coin toss. (I know what I just said sounds ridiculous to you, but do you know how ridiculous what you just said sounds to a believer?)
@BenTheUtubeN00b Only to a particular type of believer would my comments seem ridiculous. There are believers who disagree with William Lane Craig’s arguments. Mark Allison concluded that an atheist can be as moral and in some cases more moral than a believer. Many believers say that God can do whatever he wants no matter how horrific the action. There are also believers who will admit that their belief in God is irrational but they believe out of comfort and or fear.
That's a really interesting point. I had never thought of that before, but you could well be right. Thanks for giving me a point to mull over, it is definitely worthy of greater examination. Cheers!
Most welcome....nothing wrong with a toast made with a non-alcoholic beverage. But again, good point, will definitely give me something to chew on for a bit and I am very grateful for that. Best to you and yours!
@JJPHILLYLG That is probably true in many cases (for there are many different types of christians, and like Matt said; "I don't decide which are real or not"). But for the one's that claim they have a "close, intimate, personal relationship" with god, I suspect "heaven" is much less important to them than you'd think...Best comparison i can say to help you grasp this is...replace "christians"with"grandkids", "god"with"grandpa"and "heaven"with"inheritance", read and see if u still agree.
The Christian apologist was a pretty nice guy...and that's about the only good thing I can say about his performance.
As to his equating faith with falling back and having someone catch you, I would have put on a demonstration something like this:
I'd get him, tell him to close his eyes, and fall back. Then, I'd tell him that I wouldn't be the one catching him, but rather, his invisible God would catch him. (And if that happened, I'd convert.) Seems fair.
The structure of this debate was better for spewing propaganda then it was being able to hold your opponent to what he said. Matt obviously won, but he should have eviscerated this silly theist by holding him on every point. Matt was not given the chance to press his opponent. What a terrible "debate"
Observe the religious audience agreeing with the nonsensical ramblings of this deluded ape. Ironically, believers are good evidence we bear the indelible stamp of our lowly origin.
Dillahunty was merciful and affable. He turned down several juicy opportunities to eviscerate, which I would not have been able to pass up. Much respect!
I always thought what a dysfunctional relationship Christians had with their god. He's a guy, who loves you, who makes you suffer eternally if you don't love him back, who demands that you love him unconditionally and do everything the way he tells you to. Who says that you can do whatever you want, but if it's not what he tells you to, again, you suffer. Battered wife syndrome. If he was my boyfriend, I'd throw him out.
@zeldaofarel Sorry to say but you really don't paint an accurate picture of the relationship christians share with their god. What you described sounds closer to how rebel teens view their parents. So just to give you something to think about, if it is true those parents have unconditional love and enough patience and forsight to know their child can someday mature and know this for himself, would it they stop loving their little rebel simply cause he wanted to "throw them out"?
To say that objective moral values do not exist without God is ludicrous. First of all, God changes his mind several times in the bible, making him fallible and not objectively moral. Second, his morals are monstrous and inapplicable to ANY society. Third, it is evident from history that morals must be debatable and changeable. That was how we banished slavery and segregation. God's morals are just one big Might Makes Right argument.
"...from an atheist perspective there isn't cosmic justice..."
Eh? It was already mentioned that it was more important to know the TRUTH/REALITY than just to believe something which is comforting. Just because both a murderer and a kind person are going to end up in the same place makes you feel uncomfortable doesn't make it true. Things like this should motivate us to ensure that a justice is actually served than to fabricate realities which make us feel comfortable :S
