  • Likewise....saw them four times, met the man, collected the albums - this is my childhood. Never to be repeated - simply awesome music.

  • I allways thought this was a bitter sweet track, as it was alot of self irony. I met Phol a few times as he knocked up this lady friend I had. Last time I saw him he was in a mess and back in my head i remembered the lyrics of this song. Phil I guess never understood his greatness, combining heavy rock/metla with his story telling lyrics. Man if you had realized that you had to give it up, like in this song. You would have done amazing stuff. But then

  • and I saw them some 7 years in a row... allway one hell of a band!!

  • I saw Lizzy 4 times and Phil was my childhood hero. I lived and breathed Thin Lizzy when I was younger and it was a sad day for rock when we lost him. Sleep in peace Phil. We miss you now and always will.

  • LOVE so poignant :)

  • Tremendous lyrics. Brilliant musicianship.

  • Good ole Phil. One of the greatest voices of Rock!!!

  • Phil's intro is absolutely superb...........

  • 4MePhil is Magic AtrueRockHERO

  • @Coke2Stay you should feel ripped off because generally speak most music today is pure dogshit compared to timeless classics like this. however, that being said i find it encouraging that young ones such as yourself understand that,so just maybe if you learn to play yourself there just might be hope for the future of rock afterall!

  • Well, Phil never did give it up and that's why he's dead. But, he sure as hell lived life to the max and gave the world something to party to for the rest of eternity. Just a renegade.

I'm only 55 but this music is definitely, hands-down better than the stuff we have.

    Long live Thin Lizzy.

  • i really miss the genius & great singer Phil ... Thin Lizzy isn´t same without him...the heart & soul of the sound gone... R.I.P. Phil .... playing now with all great Rock´n rollers on the eternal Stage

  • prophetic words.........

  • thanks,great

  • Damn Phil, if I was around when you were taking all this heroin shit, I would've kicked the shit out of you to get you off of it, Not just for your life, but for everyone who you left behind with no more of your genius song writing to look forward to. I'd do it because I care for you brother. Happy Birthday anyway, you.......... Renegade..........

  • Love you Phil!!!!

  • Snowy was hot but too laid back - and we let him know in Sydney (in the right way). Gary Moore shredded that solo.

  • he is a god.another talent wasted.god rest him.miissed.

  • ANOTHER ONE OF THE GREATS THAT DIED WAY TOO EARLY THIS IS FROM ALL OF THE THIN LIZZY FANS WE LOVE AND MISS YOU.......REST IN PEACE.

  • im 16. i was clearly born in the wrong time period. performances like this make me feel ripped off.

  • @Coke2Stay amen to that.

  • @Coke2Stay

A pity you weren't on the scene to see this guy. He was one of the greatest front men I ever saw. All the guys wanted to be him coz he was so cool and all the girls wanted to fuck him!

Great charisma, great artist. RIP Phil.

  • 138,686? This should have 20,000,000 views.... seriously. What an amazing song/band/live performance. SICK!!!

  • I've seen guitarists come and go, but the constant for me was always Phil, Scott and Brian D ( and Brian R up until JTF). I remember coming home from work at lunchtime every day and playing this song five times before I had to return to the (not so very difficult) grind. I met Phil and he bought me a pint, a true gentleman, and Scott and Brian D were not too far behind him, wherever you may be Phil , I hope there is a Miss World contest for you to judge, you deserve it mate

  • i guess i was 8 or so when this was being played live.. even if i'd went i would not have appreciated it, but paying hommage now feels almost as good. Long live philo... et al... peace.

  • i only wish i was old enough to have seen this lineup!!

  • majestic!!!

  • Gorham is the best!!

  • RIP PHIL!

  • yeahhhh Snowy White rockss

  • Comment removed

  • I sang this in the kitchen recently after a night on the ale, I went to see this line up live. Phil flashed his base shine into everyone faces. what a loss.

  • incredible. blew my mind.

  • seriously, i understand the beetles and zeppelin...love the rolling stones and CCR. But this band is not only the most underrated but easily in contention for the thrown of any of the above listed. And if you say CCR shouldn't be under consideration for that...I think you need to listen to more CCR. Regardless....Thin Lizzy is fucking flawless...pure rock and if nonething else....influenced all current metal. Undisputably.

  • I was SmAh*****eD !!!!!!!!!

  • I wanna give it up ma ma,i'm trying to give it up its rough:( Wish he would of had some help!Gone to soon,His music lives on forever! He was special the best!!!!!!

  • the sad thing is that he didn't have to die, thats just a serious lack of faith and no umbrella when its raining bricks... what good is a bible if you aren't reading it?

  • fuck..im in love...seriouslyy...

  • Where do the years go, I can't quite believe he's been gone 25 years, makes me feel old.

  • I see Snowy White, but who's the other guy on guitar? Or did Scott Gorham get a Luke Skywalker haircut?

  • @dudestr5552 You're right, Scott had his flowing locks cut off around this time.

  • @welshsteff1970 Scott looks strange without the long 'do. Maybe he wants to be a Jedi.

  • @welshsteff1970 I wondered about that, because he's also using a different colored guitar than what he used in other videos. He doesn't look quite right without the long, flowing locks, but then I guess everyone was riding the "Star Wars" wave back then... this would have been about a year after "Empire Strikes Back" came out.

  • SNOWY WHITE MUST HAVE BEEN THE INSPIRATION FOR THE MOVIE SPINAL TAP.

  • Going to see Thin Lizzy Tuesday Night in PA.,just want to hear the without you. It won't be the same though!STILL IN LOVE WITH YOU!!!!!

  • @sassy3121 The crowd sucked at that show...pathetic.

  • Going to see Thin Lizzy Tuedsay in PA. It sure won't be the same without you Phil, but i wanted to see how the group sounds with out you! Will be thinking of you all night!

STILL IN LOVE WITH YOU !!!!

  • Never will there be another Phil.Your music lives on forever!!Love the guy<3

  • Love Phil Lynott and Thin Lizzy! I saw them in 1980 i was 22 in a club in New Jersey!OMG Freaking Amazing!Wish i could find my pictures!Just Amazing!I can't get enough of them and i love this song! So sad ,if only Phil could have gave it up:(

Such a great song writer and a poet!Have been finding so many great songs that i didnt even know!!!!Love everyone of them! And Still In Love With You!Never will there be another song like it!Missing Phil and that amazing voice and guitar!BRIP Phil! <3

  • @sassy3121 rIGHT -On . I saw Thin Lizzy in 80' as well.(16 years old) Awesome band . lOVE Phil Lynott,..Great band altogether!!

  • before phil even start singing on this track his intro was poetry

  • ima proud irish girl! ;)

  • @xxleandraxx1 You have to!

  • @xxleandraxx1 You have to!

  • 420th like

  • the man he is amazing

his mum had a relationship in London and once Phil was born packed him off to live with an aunt

He then went on to a great rock but carried the baggage and eventually it brought him tumbling down

what you hear now is not the praise of his achievement but the escuses of those that let him down

  • Great emotive song, especially from Phil, talking to his mama, about "messing with the heavy stuff, and couldn't get enough" about as true as a song as could be considering his unfortunate demise. A brilliant talent taken too early, in the same old fashion as others. Under-rated, extremely influential to rock n roll, and gone forever except for the music. The only IRISH Rock n roll star and mostly Irish (God bless Scott Gorham) band that matters and of course, RORY.

  • PhilLynott MrMagic .....

  • Philip Parris Lynott, fantastic artist, along with a fantastic band. Seen them live, but unfortunately without Lynott but it was still good even though it wasn't the same. One of my best evenings ever actually.

  • FUCKIN MASTERS

  • the best band ever! I wish Phil was still alive... :(

  • Comment removed

  • I,V just got to ????. Love this song...@worseforwere

  • Jesus, these guys were awesome...and i never even knew...thanx lizzy lives!

  • fuck yeah!

  • great band, great song darts:)

  • class

  • snowy whites no brian robertson orgary moore...shitty solo!!!!

  • @LAWDOGG61 Snowy White didn't have the talent to play in Thin Lizzy.

  • Most romantic voice of heavy sound. Phil was the unique combination of soul and hard rock.

  • For my son who died at age 35. He would tell me "Mom, drugs are my life."

  • I wish there were bands like this nowadays. These guys were so good. I'm over 50 and appreciate them more now then when I was a young lad.

  • niesamowity Phil!!!!

  • @Sprekk. true, its a sad song.

  • This makes me so sad.

  • Fuck!!! now this is rock!!! the greatest band ever in my book.

  • and indulging in the pleasures of...... SEEEEEEEEXX!!

  • the Barstool Saints - OUTLAW

  • Forgot to mention those were all concerts from '71 to '81................yhey gave Zeppilen a run for there money!

  • Jeden z najlepszych utworów Thin Lizzy z plyty Black Rose

  • 5 people need to give it up!

  • Saw Lizzy's final British show at the Reading festival in 1983 . Always liked this song . Sadest thing is , if Phil Lynott , had been a painter instead of a musician metaphorically speaking this song would have been his self portrait .

  • @andymckelvey1967 Well said

  • Gary Moore can shread like no one else!!! snowy... go fucking melt off somwhere!

  • @reditch first Gary's not even in here anymore and Snowy can shred, improvise just fine - don't sling dirt randomly.. All of Lizzys guitarists did Lizzy good. That bullshit aside.

Another great song from yes indeed the greatest Irish band and one of the best bands of all time. I don't have any other rock bands that have so many amazing songs for me.

  • @AspiringSanta ??? Gary is not here anymore??? what Gary you talking about ?? Last time I checked he was touring the Ukraine in October of 2010! Might want to check on he's website = Gary-Moore/tour.html. As for snowy.... he just sucks! I played lead for 30 years. As for THIN LIZZY it is the band that inspierd the most in my guitar playing!!!

  • @reditch in here as not in Lizzy anymore by this concert. And how does he ''just suck'' I've done some stuff for a long time as well - that doesn't mean I'm good or great or amazing at it all it just means is I've done it for awhile - not saying that about you just Snowy just sucking and you playing lead for 30 years don't really mean squat or necessarily make you the one to judge.

  • Yeah, believe me I know...it's rough. But I want to say that Brian Downey is definitely in my Top 10 of all-time favorite drummers...the guy is amazing & always was.

  • Snowy turn your AMP on mate.....

  • The little nod, from Phil Lynott to Snowy White, ushers in an amazing guitar solo.

    Long live Thin Lizzy.

  • Love em, best irish band EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Favourite song but why do people not know it????????? Even people who say they're Lizzy fans??

  • @lulabel0 their not really Lizzy fans then ;)

  • depois do solo voltou mau hein

  • I wish Phil was still alive .. And that Lizzy would still be playing ... Thank you for everything Phil .....

  • thin lizzy, the best thing out of eire,RIP phil lynott.i will never 4get the joy u gave

  • In the end, he didn't give it up.

  • gammelgarten...he was not joking but really serious dude...maybe you will understand sometime....

  • gammelgarten....he didn`t make jokes about using drugs dude!!! He was just serious....may be you will understand it sometime

  • Damn that keyboard is awful....

The two biggest mistakes Lizzy made was getting Snowy White in, and adding the keyboards. Nothing against Snowy White, but he just wasn't right for the band, and the same with the keys.

I'm just happy that Got to Give it Up was recorded before the keyboards came into the band, otherwise it could have really sucked...

    The studio version is fantastic.

  • @DeluxeReissue Disbanding was another pretty big Thin Lizzy mistake. I guess a few of the guys are back together now, but the original disbanding in 1982, or 83, or whenever it was... they shouldn't have split up.

  • @dudestr5552

Honestly, I love Thin Lizzy, but they should have split around 81, but 83 was definitely the time to do it - Phil and Scott were a wreck (I have no doubt Scott would have got worse and maybe gone down the same road as Phil), the drugs were affecting everything - Phil's health, the songs, and the performances weren't as consistent.

And I know others won't agree, but I just can't get into John Sykes - I hate that twiddly metal stuff. Lizzy will always be remembered for the 1970s.

  • @DeluxeReissue I hear you. Unfortunately I was born about 10-15 years too late - I'm only 22. But this music is definitely, hands-down better than the stuff we have.

    Long live Thin Lizzy.

  • So, good , still

  • first time listening to Lizzy and what's my vote . . . 10 OUT OF FUCKING 10!!!!!!!

  • It's too bad that Phil Lynott didn't give it up. He knew he had to but he couldn't kick the habit(s). Great song. One of my favorites by Lizzy, second only to their cover of "Whiskey in the Jar" (which is a million times better than Metallica's).

  • two words...Fucking Immense!

  • He jokes about taking drugs and later dies of them. It's tragic.

  • best guitar band ever, by a distance!

  • Most underrated band EVER.

  • at 5:11 Downy (drumer) looks at Snowy (blond lead player) and says what the fucking shit is that snowy???? U call that a solo????

  • @reditch ??????

  • You can tell a good band when they take off everywhere in the world apart from the USA!!!

  • its great...............

  • What an intro speech!!!

  • OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooo yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, thanks a f***ing bunch for posting this video!!! you're genious, friend!!

  • Drewcole314, that's not Sykes, that's Snowy White.

  • @blackmoreb35 Good call. Your right... I always thought that was Sykes. lol

  • In case they are still on stage with Phil they would be one of the biggest acts ever.

  • Damn!

  • This is the 1981 Rockpalast in Germany which is on the Thin Lizzy: Are You Ready? DvD. Right?

  • I can hardly hear Sykes solo bit

  • He was soooo STONED! LOL

  • Which dvd is this off?

  • amazing song. Philo was and remains a true genius!!!!noone like him has been around.

    R-I-P PHIL

    Love you

  • Legendary! The greatest ever! My favourite Thin Lizzy song. Greatest guitar riff. Great lyrics with so much meaning. Unbeatable live performance. So many memories.

  • God Bless Phil.

  • Happy St Patrick's Day to all you emeralds. Class and Style......sadly missed. Seen Lizzy on this tour. Thank God for blessings :)

  • So this is what the geniuses behind the music look like. This is the first time I ever see them and I like it! Thanks for the brilliant music, best band to come from Ireland!

  • Having trouble with alcohol and drugs I know how easy it is to get into too deep and the hell it is to get out

  • @valbanks100 76 the best band come to that best year

  • snowy just wasnt a showman .he was used to a set where he could lose himself on stage, thin lizzy jumped around and looked mean!snowy played keyboards when he first joined .phillo promised him he'd play guitar. great song theres nothing in todays music scene nearly as tight or rhythmic,no comparisons. lizzy rock!

  • music was all we had bro Cheers

  • know exactly how you feel RIP PL Lizzy is number 1 for me

  • lol this song actually makes me want to drink/smoke more, ironic.

    Majestic riffs.

  • also, snort and shoot.

  • ufothinlizzy u have the best name ever just itd be better if u aded msg and scorpions in there too

  • Yeah, the sound guy totally screwed a great Snowy White solo, it was great, would have even been better to hear it.

RIP Phil, your still the King.

  • Snowy sure was a brilliant guitarist......

  • He was ?

  • Should I say IS!

  • No, you should say he isn't and he never was. He embarrassed himself in Thin Lizzy. Snowy didn't have the chops or the talent to play guitar in Thin Lizzy.

  • Do you think you could do better?

He's not the only one to 'show him self up' in Thin Lizzy.... I'll never forget the night that 'Robo' was shouting in my face for some unknown reason and Phil caught him at it, just before he 'left' the Band........

  • I could do better when I was 12 years old. That's not a joke either, it's the truth. There are hundreds of thousands of guitar players who could do better as well. Hence my valid criticism. At times Snowy had a good tone, and his rhythm playing was solid, but as a lead guitar player in Thin Lizzy he couldn't cut it. The bands sales slipped as a result.

  • I was in a Band as a Teenager too, you probably won't believe this, they were before 'Thin Lizzy' and called 'The Boys', I was 16, we were a British R.A.F./Army covers band, over in Germany. Met Phil in 1972 after the Band....He was always trying to get into my nickers! Remember way back when Thin Lizzy wore German Uniforms to get noticed?

  • I'd like to get in ur knickers ; )...j/k.

  • Ha ha ha ha... BIG Joke :)

I was really HOT back then.....

Still not sure why or what Robo was shouting at me..... I'd not been introduced and never spoken to him, looks like I never will.

  • i agree with diveplane.

Rip Phill, long before my time, but still my hero!

  • I love how the fucking sound guy turns snowy up right as his solo is done. Awesome clip otherwise.

  • man i love this song

  • "....gotta give it up,its rough..."

    Love Phil

  • what year is this?

  • 1981

  • Seen a lot of Lizzy concert videos but this is the first with Snowy White. And Phil's playing a red color bass...I thought black was his color of choice.

  • it's killing me to see the greatest rockers get wiped out to drugs and booze!!!

half my generation is gone to that stuff!

fuck! Iam the only one left!

  • reditch, you 've left your half generation alone. TIME TO CHANGE , REDITCH.

  • change? I have rocked the Whisky, the Roxy,London Fog,Coconut Teaser,Rainbow Room,Molly Malones and the list goes on kid.

You can not change the soul it is what it is, what it was and what will be!!

    We rock till the end!

  • think phill was trying to say help here with this song he wrote.

    RIP

  • You said it,very sad.What a talent.

  • you'd never know Gorham was a full blown heroin addict at this point...his lead playing is searing!!!! Snowy is a great fill in guy for any band....Floyd, Lizzy.....he was amazing with Doyle Bramhall II in Roger Waters' band a few years back....

  • No use in slagging off Snowy now my friends. He is and always will be a part of the history of one of the greatest bands ever formed.....We miss ya Phil,

  • Thin Lizzy are the only rock band that really improvises, they're set apart. I saw Judas Priest recently on their tour of the States and I had considered making a point of going to see another show on their tour, but I had to ask myself, what's the point ? Thin Lizzy didn't play the same set, composed note for note every night the way 99.9% of rock bands do. This was the greatest band that's ever been, bar none. Improvisation sets the men apart from the boys. Thin Lizzy were a live band.

  • Jeez. Prophetic. I guess Phillo knew the booze and drugs were killing him but not many people actually get on stage and sing about it to thousands of people. True artist.
