You ever have a movie that is so familiar, comforting and beloved that it feels like you're coming home whenever you watch it? Wonder Boys is that for me. It's been 10 years since I first saw it and it hasn't lost anything.
I saw this film on its opening weekend in Feb of 2000...I was so inspired by it that I told my friend who went with me that I wouldn't see a better movie all year. That year included, Traffic, Couching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Requiem for a Dream. By the end of the year my statement held true. Wonder Boys is the best movie of 2000. It is a shame that the film was ignored by major awards especially Michael Douglas' career best performance.
This movie is so underrated. It's brilliant, beautiful, witty and just plain comforting. It's featured in the book The Best DVDs You've Never Seen, Just Missed or Almost Forgotten, compiled by New York Times movie critics.
Follow my quest on watching all 500 movies in this book in just 365 days. Here's my review of Wonder Boys: ofelialegaspiDOTcom
i bought this movie today at walmart ! it was only 50 pesos (like 3 dlls) so cheap! and i loved it!!!! i bought it cuz RDJ is in it, but its actually a brilliant film!
It really pisses me off that brilliant films like this are pretty much ignored, but shit like Avatar and Slumdog Millionaire make millions ( and billions) and get loads of awards .......
@dan564891 I'll agree with you on slumdog millionaire but I'm a sci fi junkie! I'm talking total trekie junkie! But I did enjoy this movie as well. It's nice to take a break and watch something subtle and poignant
@dan564891 ..this is one of the best films I have seen and I have watched it
over and over, like all good films. Few make excuses are made for the academy, they are like the movie mafia and rely on their peers to support their nominations and awards, and who knows what kind of politics are working. I guess I can only be pleased when great nominations are made and won. And Slumdog Millionaire, I did not track that one, maybe it is the abstraction that everyone else understands. I don't.
@dan564891 umm i wouldn't go that far critisizing avatar, but yeah there have been movies far weaker than wonderboys that have gained undue success and popularity
@dan564891 Slumdog Millionaire DID indeed succeed as a motion picture; Wonder Boys failed. The only thing it succeeded in doing was giving visual representation to the awesome characers of Chabon's novel. The book is so amazing and profound that it makes the movie look loke garbage. The movie did HWVR prompt me to read Mysteries of Pittsburg, which for some reason figures a representation for 'Arsonist's Daughter'. It totally works as a rep for a life changing read.
@dan564891I know this is ages later, those movies really were not sh*t if you knew things about films. Just because brilliant ones as this particular one, goes unnoticed does not mean the ones that are noticed are faulty winners, believe me I don't think everything that is hyped or focused on is worth such attention. Me personally, I give credibility & respect for what is deserved regardless. I cannot allow my annoyance of, over hyped BS to disturb the actual facts, in this case worthy films.
It's been a while, but I think Toby McGuire and/or Robert Downey Jr's character is/are gay, but I'm not sure. It might have been one of those ambiguous things that was much more explicit in the book.
This movie inspired me to begin a book. Hope I am able to finish it. I was fascinated by the superb acting of everyone in the cast. It is a jewel of a movie.
This was the worst movie I have ever seen. I saw it at the theatre when it came out in 2000 and wanted to get up and leave after about 30 minutes because it was so horrible. The story was very boring and Robert Downey Jr's character molested Tobey Maguire.
This is my absolute favorite movie. Clever and hillarious, My favorite parts include, "the big trunk", "That's my car Mofo", "Wordfest pharmecopia", "under the influence while watching "Babes In Arms" and "The truth about Errol Flynn"
Ditto () !!! This is just one of those movies I can watch again and again. It makes me feel good. Love Michael Douglas. I think he is one of America's best all round actors. War of the Roses was another brillient film.
