Um thats not smoke, its raw fuel.there forcing somuch nitro in that engine thers noway it can burn it all at a idle or at full throttle for that matter....
nitro-meth gas burn different and at a lot higher rate than regular gasoline. its also open header. thats why it smokes so much..similar gas you buy from a hobby shop for nitro rc engines..
@chadanderik Probably because the block is not at optimum temperature. Or when you think of how hot that exhaust is. Same concept when your car is running in the cold weather you get clouds from your exhaust. The exhaust is probably way hotter then the outside air so you can see it. Just my theory anyway.
i got to goto the Gatornationals this year, and HOLLY SHIT. Ya watching on TV will NEVER even give you a 10th of an idea of what these jokers sound like in person. I have a video of it in my vids. And then to be feet away when they set the clutch like in the video, JESUS.
You can watch videos all day long and watch these things race on TV and it does them no justice. You have to go to a NHRA sanctioned event which will have all the big boys there and the first time you hear and see one of these things blast down the race track you'll realize just how unbelievable these cars are. By time the drivers foot hits full throttle they are over 100 MPH ! 0 to 327 MPH in 3.7 seconds on a good run. If you love fast go to a event and watch.
To anybody who has never stood within feet of a dragster doing this: It litterally is one of those things many do not get to experience. You litterally feel like you have no heart because the intsnsity of the machineshakes everything within 30 feet of it
A person that never seen one of these cars run in person could never begin to understand the thunderousness that that thing produces. Soo freakin' loud. Unreal. Cannot be near one without ear plugs or ear muffs.
From a lifetime drag lover, the Nitro pouring out of the exhaust looks fun but DON'T get in that fog. Watched even the toughest men struggle for air and eyes burned red from being downwind of that. By all means get close and feel your ribs shake, just get clear of the fog of fuel. It's not mostly exhaust, but raw fuel.
@BlahBlahBlah55209 ahh the magical wonders of not only internal combustion but unused fuel creating an external (atmospheric) combustion, i always thought this was dam amazing. The stacks are designed for down-force and also angled slightly back for push. These cars truly are amazing. Thanks for the advice man!
@gillguay just cuz somebodies a hippie dont mean they cant like nitro meth burning dragsters... xD its so stupid how u think all hippies are tree huggers... bahaha nope im a hippie, all i do is smoke weed and mellow out..
Actually those tests have been done. Top fuel dragsters go from 0-100 mph in about 0.84 seconds. That's 3 times as fast as a Bugati Veyron's 0-60 time!!
I don't think you'll ever pull 5 g's of acceleration (from a standstill) in your Ferrari, sustaining that many g's for a long time will make you pass out!
Road racing and drag racing are two different animals, each have their own beauties.
If the horsepower measurement was from fuel comsumption the engine will sometimes pour fuel out and the car will not do as well as with when the car is "firing on all 8 cylinders"
They put a device on the wheels, I am an engineer, and it still just an estimate of the power. If they were to measure it on a machine, I would not want to be in the room when they test it out, I have seen too many of these engines let go and they are not very stable!! especially on full nitro!! And if it let go in a room, it would be disasterous!
@slingblade1991 No it is not by the fuel usage, it how many pounds can be moved a foot, that is where they get foot pounds. Horsepower is see wikipedia reference
@MikeEE12246 I know the definitions of hp and torque already.I'm saying that they don't actually "dyno" these engines,i havn't seen a dyno that reads to 8000 hp.Theoretical hp can be calculated by fuel usage and a couple other variables. And those calculations are usually within +-5% of actual crank hp.Ive had both of my cars on the dyno for many hours and know how it works, but im fairly sure that isn't what they are doing with these.
@slingblade1991 Yeah I dont think they use a fuel comsumption as they calculate it, and no they would not want to take a chance with being in a little room with one of these monsters (I have seen the destruction from going to several NHRA events), I think they use some kind of device on the wheels, like a dial with a spring and the dial will record the best amount of the spring compresses and from there the calculation is made, but this is a guess, if it was from the fuel comsumption
@MikeEE12246 It is a guess, they don't have any actual power numbers from these engines.Only close approximations. Also, i dont think they would even dyno these engines due to the very short lives of them.I'll search for this device that is attached to the hubs and if i find it,then i guess im wrong.
@MikeEE12246 You could be right, it seems like that device you are describing would be used to measure torque.if they get a torque figure and rpm, hp can be very easily calculated.
I got an idea for all the dis-believers of how much power these cars have. Just go to a race! I am just about getting sick of trying to convince some of the locals where I live that these cars are louder than their T-Hondas and Sportbikes. When your skin and muscle is vibrating on your skeleton, and your vision is blurry from the shock waves. You might then understand why even Top Alcohol dragsters are quiet compared to these beasts!
@POTATOESLOL it does, I bolted a turbo off a semi (caterpillar motor), and it's cranking out 150 psi of boost. Plus I have 24" inch wide slicks in the front. Oh, and it's a vtec
Dont get your panties in a bunch. My civic has at least as many stickers as this wreck, plus I have a racing stripe.....ahh, I can't keep it going. I can't believe any of you knuckleheads dignified my vtec post with a response.
Anyone that doesnt know, these monsters run the 1/4 mile in around 3 seconds at over 300 miles per hour, thats 0-100 in 1 second. That is fucking biblical mind warping earth turning power, it is really impossible to get much faster without using jet turbines and breaking the speed of fucking sound.
the smoke you see is the nitromethane it runs on..at the end the smoke dissapears and the engine revs up just before shutdown..that´s the result from shutting of the nitromethanol fuel.. just love it.. :)
14.7 lbs. of air is required to burn 1 pound of gasoline, but only 1.7 lb. of air for 1 lb. of nitromethane. Since an engine’s cylinder can only contain a limited amount of air on each stroke, 8.7 times more nitromethane than gasoline can be burned in one stroke. Nitromethane, has a lower energy density: Gasoline provides about 42–44 MJ/kg whereas nitromethane provides only 11.3 MJ/kg. nitromethane generates about 2.3 times the power of gasoline when combined with a given amount of oxygen.
i love power, cars, and raw tourque, im a mechanic by trade, and an out and out ireversible petrol head.. BUTTTTTTTT!!! i cant give this form of motorsport the credit others get.. i could be wrong. in fact i have no idea about the sport, but building engines that last all of 30 mins.. is pointless, pointless to me- i know people will be offended, i fix engines for a living. and day to day i see new ways manufactures have used to prolong failure.. in my eyes these things make no sense
@nickernosher Drag racing (especially at the level of the teams shown in this video) is not a "practical" sport, in terms of longevity of parts. But unless you've been on or near the starting line when these cars take off, you can't make any comments. It's the most visceral, brutal experience you'll ever have-- short of being shot or set on fire (which the sound and feeling is similar to both of those). Make a trip to Santa Pod track there in the UK and experience it for yourself.
@nickernosher Sorry but these engines last all of 15 seconds (estimated) and try and get 8K horses out of an engine and you will know why these engines don't last, these are not built for prolonging the life it built for poweer!!
@XxTQxX but that is the point try and build something that will take 8K horses, I don't think any thing can take that kind of punishment, and that is what the sport is about getting power to the ground and go fast!!
@MikeEE12246 We're only in 2011, we still have plenty more years of development and engineering to do so we can build an engine that can last long and that can handle that much power
@JayBird90210 we have the engines that last a long time but they are built for ships!! We are talking about 2200 lbs cars and are made with no tollerance on making them last long, like I said these cars are made to go fast and last about 15 seconds long, so they are throwaways, if you make them last they would not make the weight and go as fast as these cars do!!
@MikeEE12246 theres still a possibility of discovering a new material light and strong enough to last long and handle that much power in the same size
@JayBird90210 You will be in dream land, that kind of power you would need some kind of material that can't be invented, just to let you know I am an engineer, and if the material was possible, they would have come up with it in the history of man. And it will not probably will not be made ever to handle the kind of power that we are talking about
@nickernosher it dosent need to live very long, its drag racing. from an engine builders perspective, a 48 year (roughly) evolution of a race engine that went from track to street back to track isnt interesting? its a 2nd generation chrysler designed hemi thats had its brevity compromised. in the quest for all out power. dont worry richard petty proved it could live for hours at wide open throttle shoving a massive brick thru the air, but youve probably never heard of him.
@nickernosher 30 Minutes is pushing your luck! Several engines are brought along and a crew changes it out the night between days and an unexpected failure backup. They've always used about 7 to 8 gallons of fuel per burn and run. The tires are heated up in the burn out so they become like the sticky rubber toys kids throw on the wall, almost like fly paper! But my friend there's nothing like 8,000 Horses on Steriods!!!
@nickernosher The point here Mr. "I work on small 4-door passenger cars"...is to go 1000ft in the shortest possible time. Its drag racing...and it goes back to 1960's California. Thats the point. Not to get 35 MPG, not to last its owner 300K miles, not to hand down to your children when they get a license, not to put the dog in and go fishin. The track is 1000 feet long...and the first SOB to get there wins. The second SOB to get there loses. Thats the deal. Takes 8000HP. Period.
@NeilLB7 i lol at your comment, at 21 i was qualified h.g.v. mechanic, a little bigger that 4 door cars lol. 700hp 3000nm trucks or semi's i think ye call the, so the next time think before you talk and dont get yourself in a position to be made a fool of, be nice on the internet you never know who your talking to, thanks for your pointless contribution
How the hell do little engine like that put out 8,000 HP When engins as big as a pickup truck (and by that I mean the engine it's self is as big AS a pickup truck not a pike trucks engine) only put out 1,500 HP?
@Ham549 it is the fuel and how they pump the air into the engine, during a run the car will use up to 15 gallons of fuel, you need to go to an event and see what I am talking about, TV does not do it justice!! If you like it on TV, and I rate the TV show a plus, then going to it live is ten times that!!
@Ham549 Actually after every race they take out the engine because with all the horsepower they blow out the engine. If you watych NHRA all it takes is one missed gear and boom engine blows up like halfway down the track. I love NHRA but its a very wasteful sport and the drivers don't get paid too much even though their fucking basically holding on for dear life every run unlike nascar drivers who make tens of millions driving at 200 miles an hour
@Ham549 Answer.... those motors use exotic fuels plus Lots of air.. the smoke ure seeing is unspent fuel and those cars run multiple fuel pumps when they test run these motors between runs they only use 1-2 fuel pumps. when these cars really run the track they can leave a 15 foot fire ball in their wake.also as stated they dont get miles per gallon like normal cars these do gallons per mile..
@Ham549 Amazing huh? I asked the same question in 1978. Locomotives put out 6,000 hp. It's all about how much air you can push through the motor, basically.
Anytime you want to put up your little hybred, bring it on, these cars will eat them in a heartbeat and keep going, I have been to a lot of Nitro fuel races and it is too scarey even for me to think about driving in one of these beasts
@MikeEE12246 Want experience in driving one of these untamable, unlimited, barely restrained monsters of Horse Power. Find a small compact car, a narrow road meant for speeds 55 and lower, but go down that road as fast as you can with a 500lb Silverback Gorilla in the back seat!
@Warhammer1975 your honda can pump out 8000 horsepower and cover the 1320 in 4.5 seconds? if you think thats true i got some great land to sell you next to a nuclear power plant in japan...
@Warhammer1975 just shut the fuck up. This thing runs off of your Honda, your Honda couldnt make this much horsepower if you had two engines and 6 turbos.
@Warhammer1975 sorry but your honda is no where near as loud. when the nitro cars run the ground literally shakes and its by far the loudest the thing ive ever heard.
I get a kick out of they newbys with their kids that go right up to the pits b4 the warm-up and suddenly stampede away during rpm checks.Covering your eyes, nose and ears is hard for the novice spectators. Those are probably the 95 flip flop wearing yuppies that dislike this. XD
first time i saw monster like that, i`ve was little bit drunk and naaa that`s not so loud. but the first throttle opening it was too late to cover my ears ( tinnitus is nice friend
If you don't get drag racing, you'd never appreciate this fully... The experience of seeing a car, built to be aerodynamically perfect, with 34" of tire at the back and about 6" of tire on the front... The smell of burnt rubber and fuel that makes your nose hairs curl and your eyes water... The sound and feel of 8000 Clydesdales stomping the ground through 8 open headers... And when the green lights come on, it's like listening to Zeus having a 4 second orgasm 200' away from you...
I just went and saw these for the first time today, got the thunder alley pass so I got right next to the starting line. No ear plugs, that shit was nasty. Everytime they took off the line it felt like someone was hitting you in the chest with a sledgehammer and your ear drums were going to explode.
it is impossible to capture the experience of listening to one of these beasts idle on camera, its funny bringing "first timers" near something like this
@xripperx898 the only way you can really experience this is if u capture the sound in HQ and plug it into a big ass sterio and turn it up all the way. u gotta do it outside too. it sounds different when when the sound resonates in a small room
well miles per gallons out the window... all about gallons per quarter mile now baby!

MikeEE12246 5 months ago 5
@MikeEE12246 thats seriously cool but you just proved his point.....
XxTQxX 5 months ago
@XxTQxX but that is the point try and build something that will take 8K horses, I don't think any thing can take that kind of punishment, and that is what the sport is about getting power to the ground and go fast!!
MikeEE12246 5 months ago
@MikeEE12246 We're only in 2011, we still have plenty more years of development and engineering to do so we can build an engine that can last long and that can handle that much power
JayBird90210 4 months ago
@JayBird90210 we have the engines that last a long time but they are built for ships!! We are talking about 2200 lbs cars and are made with no tollerance on making them last long, like I said these cars are made to go fast and last about 15 seconds long, so they are throwaways, if you make them last they would not make the weight and go as fast as these cars do!!
MikeEE12246 4 months ago
@MikeEE12246 theres still a possibility of discovering a new material light and strong enough to last long and handle that much power in the same size
JayBird90210 4 months ago
@JayBird90210 You will be in dream land, that kind of power you would need some kind of material that can't be invented, just to let you know I am an engineer, and if the material was possible, they would have come up with it in the history of man. And it will not probably will not be made ever to handle the kind of power that we are talking about
MikeEE12246 4 months ago
@nickernosher it dosent need to live very long, its drag racing. from an engine builders perspective, a 48 year (roughly) evolution of a race engine that went from track to street back to track isnt interesting? its a 2nd generation chrysler designed hemi thats had its brevity compromised. in the quest for all out power. dont worry richard petty proved it could live for hours at wide open throttle shoving a massive brick thru the air, but youve probably never heard of him.
Tarten46 5 months ago
@nickernosher 30 Minutes is pushing your luck! Several engines are brought along and a crew changes it out the night between days and an unexpected failure backup. They've always used about 7 to 8 gallons of fuel per burn and run. The tires are heated up in the burn out so they become like the sticky rubber toys kids throw on the wall, almost like fly paper! But my friend there's nothing like 8,000 Horses on Steriods!!!

@nickernosher UUUHHHHH. to go fast maybe?
exactscience1 5 months ago
@nickernosher The point here Mr. "I work on small 4-door passenger cars"...is to go 1000ft in the shortest possible time. Its drag racing...and it goes back to 1960's California. Thats the point. Not to get 35 MPG, not to last its owner 300K miles, not to hand down to your children when they get a license, not to put the dog in and go fishin. The track is 1000 feet long...and the first SOB to get there wins. The second SOB to get there loses. Thats the deal. Takes 8000HP. Period.
NeilLB7 5 months ago

Ham549 5 months ago
@Ham549 it is the fuel and how they pump the air into the engine, during a run the car will use up to 15 gallons of fuel, you need to go to an event and see what I am talking about, TV does not do it justice!! If you like it on TV, and I rate the TV show a plus, then going to it live is ten times that!!
MikeEE12246 5 months ago
@Ham549 Actually after every race they take out the engine because with all the horsepower they blow out the engine. If you watych NHRA all it takes is one missed gear and boom engine blows up like halfway down the track. I love NHRA but its a very wasteful sport and the drivers don't get paid too much even though their fucking basically holding on for dear life every run unlike nascar drivers who make tens of millions driving at 200 miles an hour
CoolGuy4rmNORCAL 5 months ago
@Ham549 Those big engines aren't spinning enough RPM's to make 8000hp. I bet they have as much torque as a top fuel dragster though.
sniper1334 5 months ago
@Ham549 Answer.... those motors use exotic fuels plus Lots of air.. the smoke ure seeing is unspent fuel and those cars run multiple fuel pumps when they test run these motors between runs they only use 1-2 fuel pumps. when these cars really run the track they can leave a 15 foot fire ball in their wake.also as stated they dont get miles per gallon like normal cars these do gallons per mile..
DemonSS07 5 months ago
@Ham549 Amazing huh? I asked the same question in 1978. Locomotives put out 6,000 hp. It's all about how much air you can push through the motor, basically.

Anytime you want to put up your little hybred, bring it on, these cars will eat them in a heartbeat and keep going, I have been to a lot of Nitro fuel races and it is too scarey even for me to think about driving in one of these beasts
MikeEE12246 5 months ago 2
@MikeEE12246 Want experience in driving one of these untamable, unlimited, barely restrained monsters of Horse Power. Find a small compact car, a narrow road meant for speeds 55 and lower, but go down that road as fast as you can with a 500lb Silverback Gorilla in the back seat!
MrLarryMead 5 months ago in playlist MrLarryMead's Favorited Videos
@Warhammer1975 your honda can pump out 8000 horsepower and cover the 1320 in 4.5 seconds? if you think thats true i got some great land to sell you next to a nuclear power plant in japan...
ripwtc91101 5 months ago
@Warhammer1975 youre honda civic is a ricer, one piston from this makes more horsepower than your civic
RussianAmericanArms 5 months ago
@Warhammer1975 just shut the fuck up. This thing runs off of your Honda, your Honda couldnt make this much horsepower if you had two engines and 6 turbos.
moparmaniac21 5 months ago
@Warhammer1975 sorry when half a cylinder in this makes more power than ur civic will ever make, i dont think u stand a chance.

@Warhammer1975 sorry but your honda is no where near as loud. when the nitro cars run the ground literally shakes and its by far the loudest the thing ive ever heard.
TheOombop 5 months ago
@Warhammer1975 Your civic would have to go from 0-60 in less than half a second and have a top speed of more than 350 to beat it.

I get a kick out of they newbys with their kids that go right up to the pits b4 the warm-up and suddenly stampede away during rpm checks.Covering your eyes, nose and ears is hard for the novice spectators. Those are probably the 95 flip flop wearing yuppies that dislike this. XD

They use 15 gallons of fuel during a run, which is now 1000 ft so that is about 100 feet per gallon or 1/52 miles per gallon

No wonder why the ozone layer is fucked. :)
RezzoBeatsnStuff 7 months ago
@RezzoBeatsnStuff These cars run on a mix of nitro methane and methanol, or straight methanol, which is actually pretty clean burning.
4CH3NO2 + 3O2 → 4CO2 + 6H2O + 2N2
2 CH3OH + 3 O2 → 2 CO2 + 4 H2O
What this means is It all just makes water, some carbon dioxide, and nitrogen. Which is actually pretty damn green compared to gasoline and C10.
