Thanks for putting these clips up! Memories come back from when I was so young my feet didn't reach the front of the settee. It was the best thing about Saturday. I still regard advert breaks as Telly Selly Time, and continually wish many presenters or interviewees could get a face full of custard pie, or a bucket of water at the least.
At the end of the Tiswas Reunited DVD ,theres a bonus (to make it slightly different from taping it off the TV) docu in which Chris interviews John Asher & tells him "YoU were the first presenter of Tiswas" to which John just laughs. Its a magic moment that just about says it all.
Being a fan NoT from ATVland ,I gotta ask the nasty question.Did they all leave or did PRODUCER Chris think "Hmm,if this lot werent here, all this ,would be mine!"rather like Granada thought at ITV schedule planning meetings!-owch!
John Asher looks like he coulda done Chris,s job when HE left.
Peter Tomlinson and John Asher were the only regular presenters in this clip, the others were Tarrant and Trevor East. Tomlinson was definitely sacked to be replaced by Sally James, who'd done a similar show on LWT, under a deal to make Tiswas a 'national' ITV show to compete with the BBC's high-budget Swap Shop. He carried on as an ATV continuity announcer, so still popped up on Tiswas doing spoof voiceover announcements of the 'we interrupt this newsflash for a programme' variety.
I was watching Tiswas by 1975 but I think that's the first time I've seen the endcap in all its glory - no-one I knew in 1975 had a colour TV! And is that presenter really wearing a CAMRA t-shirt on children's tv?! That would never be allowed now would it??
great clip. how hot is joan palmer on here!!great to see poochie tomlinson again. LOVED the multi coloured ATV TISWAS PRODUCTION encap. thanks for posting
Yes i do indeed remember those wonderful in vision announcers. They were the days when television had integrity and quality programmes. all those wonderful ITV regional providers like ATV, HTV, Westward, Thames, Tyne Tees etc contributing to the ricch ITV network. What a shambles ITV is now with all these stations closed for cost cutting. shame.
@ATVmidlands5581 I consider we were lucky that we only had 3 channels in the 1970's. I don't know if my age of 47 has got anything to do with it but I remember all telly being of high quality back then, now I refuse to have a TV licence. I unplugged the aerial two years ago and spend my spare time watching DVD's.
not sure which part of brum those accents wuz from?

The TISWAS presenters were quite posh and well spoken in the early days!

Sitting behind that big desk ,they all look like possible replacements for Alesha Dixon on Strictly Come Dancing!

Yeahhh..I remember TISWAS as a child in 1975. At the time I thought it was the best thing to happen to television on a saturday morning.

What became of him after Tiswas? Does he still like to talk about it?
qpr60 3 years ago
Yes, he talks about it occasionally. He works for Ricoh now, and has done for a few years. Thoroughly nice chap.

did Peter Thomlinson use to be anouncer for ATV as well as Tiwas
abhudson14 3 years ago
He did, and he was also a voice-over man on Blockbusters.
qpr60 3 years ago
@abhudson14 - and in 1979 he became the MD of Beacon Radio in Wolverhampton (to try to bring some "normality" to its broadcasting !)
