  • not sure which part of brum those accents wuz from?

  • i love the way they say at the end " a colour production" like it means something.

  • ah,happy memories! Peter Tomlinson(Aya-Tomlinson when he was Beacon Radio md!!) , John Asher and all....before Tarrant went frontline.

  • JEEZ........How "Blue Peter" Was Tizwas before the REAL presenters came in..?....Somebody must have seriously woke up when they saw this......!!!!

  • "the happiest man in bilston" ... is there such a person? lol.

...nice to see me hometown getting a mention on Tiswas!

  • The TISWAS presenters were quite posh and well spoken in the early days!

  • Sitting behind that big desk ,they all look like possible replacements for Alesha Dixon on Strictly Come Dancing!

  • Yeahhh..I remember TISWAS as a child in 1975. At the time I thought it was the best thing to happen to television on a saturday morning.

  • Thanks for putting these clips up! Memories come back from when I was so young my feet didn't reach the front of the settee. It was the best thing about Saturday. I still regard advert breaks as Telly Selly Time, and continually wish many presenters or interviewees could get a face full of custard pie, or a bucket of water at the least.

  • old skool Tiswas

  • hi guys!

John Asher is my Dad! Im glad to hear that you guys think so warmly of him as will he! Illpass your messages on!!!

Yes he works for Ricoh at the moment, as well as running the Big Dog Theatre Company in Buckinghamshire which do musicals twice a year!

    Keep the faith!

    Laurie Asher

  • @Lozbloke - Wow ! John was on the first Tiswas programmes I think. I only had very distant, foggy memories of him until I found these clips tonight.

  • Guys John Asher is my Dad, and yes he works for Ricoh now, and runs Big Dog Theatre Company in Buckinghamshire now!

just for an update! :-) x

  • Those kids in the back look bored.Dont worry only 2 years to Star Wars.

  • At the end of the Tiswas Reunited DVD ,theres a bonus (to make it slightly different from taping it off the TV) docu in which Chris interviews John Asher & tells him "YoU were the first presenter of Tiswas" to which John just laughs. Its a magic moment that just about says it all.

  • Being a fan NoT from ATVland ,I gotta ask the nasty question.Did they all leave or did PRODUCER Chris think "Hmm,if this lot werent here, all this ,would be mine!"rather like Granada thought at ITV schedule planning meetings!-owch!

John Asher looks like he coulda done Chris,s job when HE left.

  • Peter Tomlinson and John Asher were the only regular presenters in this clip, the others were Tarrant and Trevor East. Tomlinson was definitely sacked to be replaced by Sally James, who'd done a similar show on LWT, under a deal to make Tiswas a 'national' ITV show to compete with the BBC's high-budget Swap Shop. He carried on as an ATV continuity announcer, so still popped up on Tiswas doing spoof voiceover announcements of the 'we interrupt this newsflash for a programme' variety.

  • Wonderful regional ITV -made for you with sixpence & a toffee apple -type feel to it.That sadly you dont get anymore.

Wonder if any of em sit in pubs now slurring "I was there before Sally &$%@ing James ye know!

  • Still very prim and proper, hadn't quite reached the chaotic stage.

  • I had lunch with John Asher yesterday!

  • What became of him after Tiswas? Does he still like to talk about it?

  • Yes, he talks about it occasionally. He works for Ricoh now, and has done for a few years. Thoroughly nice chap.

  • did Peter Thomlinson use to be anouncer for ATV as well as Tiwas

  • He did, and he was also a voice-over man on Blockbusters.

  • @abhudson14 - and in 1979 he became the MD of Beacon Radio in Wolverhampton (to try to bring some "normality" to its broadcasting !)

  • Fantastic - great to see John Asher and the folks again. Shame Chris was off as I used to really like the John & Chris combination

  • Great, harmless Saturday morning tv, before the health and safety brigade were trying to justify their jobs!

  • Not THE Peter Mathews!!!!

  • And there was me believing that no tape of John Asher on Tiswas still existed...wow!

  • @kalsolarUK - me too ! I remember him in the first Tiswas programmes of 1974.

  • I was watching Tiswas by 1975 but I think that's the first time I've seen the endcap in all its glory - no-one I knew in 1975 had a colour TV! And is that presenter really wearing a CAMRA t-shirt on children's tv?! That would never be allowed now would it??

  • That's a psychedelic endcap, man! *grins*

  • great clip. how hot is joan palmer on here!!great to see poochie tomlinson again. LOVED the multi coloured ATV TISWAS PRODUCTION encap. thanks for posting

  • @ATVmidlands5581 - oh, Joan Palmer was excellent - she was an in vision (remember those?) continuity announcer.

  • @Enerjee

    Hi

Yes i do indeed remember those wonderful in vision announcers. They were the days when television had integrity and quality programmes. all those wonderful ITV regional providers like ATV, HTV, Westward, Thames, Tyne Tees etc contributing to the ricch ITV network. What a shambles ITV is now with all these stations closed for cost cutting. shame.

  • @ATVmidlands5581 I consider we were lucky that we only had 3 channels in the 1970's. I don't know if my age of 47 has got anything to do with it but I remember all telly being of high quality back then, now I refuse to have a TV licence. I unplugged the aerial two years ago and spend my spare time watching DVD's.
