  • English translation--I would ask no dowry for Sadhbh Ni Bhruinnealla, but the village of Inis Ge and a permit to steal up on rabbits. Ora, Sadhbh Ni Bhruinealla, My hearts beloved, elope and leave with me. I'm a good boatman, a fine oarsman, skillful with shovel or loy on either end of the ridge. I'm the master of a large sail boat on the way to Galway, I'd wet nine sods of turf, but would not take any water in. The master of a hooker I'd never accept, (ran out of space, but you get the idea)

  • your music is INCREDIBLY GOOD. As a Canadian whose mothers maiden name is Kearney, Connors on my Dad's side. I am always impressed by Irish artists. But what do I know, I am the Canadian who discovered a way to grow healthier & healthier and who has had M.S. for over 18yrs.

I was born and raised a Newfoundlander, impressive what Irish decendants can accomplish.

  • absolutely Irish. From Connemara, to be specific.

  • Thanks , now I can't listen to this plagarized song.........god bless

  • Changing a few lines in a traditional song isn't the same thing as plagiarising. It happens all the time.

  • @Cahill206 I think you have to think of things a little differently in oral traditions.

  • Liam O'Maonlai is the greatest singer Ireland has produced since Luke Kelly.

Does anybody have his performance of 'Paddy's Green Shamrock Shore'?

  • great singer. the irish sounds great in song

  • what a guy! no.1 x

  • Gah, why can't Gaelic be spelled like it's pronounced ...

  • Night? Bough? Door? Worcester????

  • Hey, don't get me wrong, I think English spelling is absurd, too.

  • It is spelled how it's pronounced, once you know how to pronounce the individual letters, and how they work together, then it's very simple honestly.

  • what in the name of all that is holy does fucking anti semitism have to dow ith liam o maonlai. im quite sure he is not an anti semite seeming as he is a very multi cultural man and respects other cultures, religions, etc. so enjoy the damn music and stop this bickering. fucks sake.

  • If you want to know - read the comments!

No-one with any sense suggested Liam was anti-Semitic.

The original mention of Jews was in relation to the "jew's harp" instrument played on this clip - to which someone made a casually anti-Semitic response.

I called them on it, I'd do it again, I don't think it's bickering.

  • ah i see but rightfully so i guess goys do have their way. yet still i wish youtube would be free of all these arguments but hey whatever thats me.

  • Is it just me or does he skip over every second verse and mumble his Irish a lot? Or is that characteristic of Liam O Maonlaí?

  • im pretty sure hes not mumbling. most sean nos songs are never song one specific way. it has to do with the fact that they are passed on orally versus writing it down hence why he might skip a verse.

  • Is minic a gheibhean beal oscailt diog dunta!

  • You should calm down, Liam is not an anti-semite. You don't see the Irish going mad if they are called Paddy or Mick. They accept these things with characteristic good nature and don't borrow trouble and thin skins.

  • OK, maybe I should calm down, but maybe you should read the comments before commenting? God Almighty - no-one suggested Liam was an anti-semite!? :~)

But not all Irish people are happy with racism - while I think most aren't thin-skinned & are good-natured, many would object to racism, anti-semitism, etc - fair enough IMO.

  • Fair enough. Anti-semitism should never go unchecked. I stand right beside ye on calling him on it ( sorry for calling ye a cunt by the way.........). Slainte a buachaill.

  • Well said blether12,

What the fuck has Israel, jewish people, religion or any other bollox, these two stupid cunts,(matskigudjohnson and o0micmac0o)are arguing about have to do with Liam O Maonlaí and Irish music. Jasus will ye just listen to the feckin music and shut the F up.

  • I'll shut the F up when & if I want to, ta :~)

All I did was explain what instrument was being played (jaws/jews harp) & didn't feel like just accepting his casual anti-semitism - so I called him on it. I'd happily do it again. Slainte Mhath.

  • Actually the instrument is called a "Juice Harp" because it take the juice from you mouth to make it sound good.

  • Why does anyone get into stupid arguments over things not related to the music itself.

Ar aghaidh leat a Liam. Builí fear!

  • That man Liam is class, what a talent.

  • Saw him support The Swell Season in London a few weeks ago...blown away !!!

  • eistigí

eist do bhéál agus bígí ag eisteacht leis an amhrán agus stad le do thuairimi amadach

  • Aontaim go h-iomlan leat a chara, nil fisain ar bith ar an suiomh seo gan aimidi mar sin ag dul ar aighidh futhu! Nil a fhios agam cad chuige nach dtig le daoine eisteacht leis an cheol ghalanta agus bheith ina dtost!

  • What's the bosca that the man is playing? Is it a real instrument?

  • Yeah, thanks - I think it was your insults & swearing that won the argument.

Just to explain again, hating Jews = anti-semitism - Jews are a religio-cultural group spread throughout the world; the Israelis (specifically the Israeli govt & army - as not al Israelis support their actions) are the ones doing unspeakable things to the men, women & children of Palestine.

If this leads you to hate Israel, Israelis or even all Jews - fair enough (I'm sure they're losing sleep over it).

  • Liam is brilliant, that was magic. Maith thu.

  • Maith an fear Liam. Go híontach!

  • Beautiful except for that stupid thing yo bang off your teeth that go's "BOING" at the end.

  • funny - I quite like that - & it's low enough in the mix to not be too "in yer face". (it's a "jew's harp" & a quick wiki tells me RedHotChilliPeppers, TheWho, RufusWainwright, TheZutons, DeLaSoul, BeachBoys, NeilYoung, Blur, JoannaNewsom, BlackSabbath, AphexTwin, BonJovi & ScissorSisters have all used one at some point!

  • Ha ha the fact its called a "jews harp"makes me hate it more!I'v always associated it with australian music because good digery doo players can reproduce the same noise but it suits the music better.I found it out of place in Irish music.

That some of those artists(some of which are my favorates)use it doesnt change the fact that it is not my cup of tea.I tried playing it before&hated the sensation of metal on my teeth. But different strokes for different folks,if you like it thats fair enough.

  • what's with the "the fact its called a "jews harp" makes me hate it more"? - casual anti-semitism?

  • Not anti-semitism but anti Zionism. One is often mistaken for another.

  • Nice try - but try again - you seemed to talk of hating something because of a link to Jews - Zionism=Israel; Semite=Jews. Spot the difference?

  • I'm not a Zionist apologist & my guess is some Zionists do hide behind anti-semitism; you however were using anti-Zionism to hide your anti-semitism! Well done for coming out of the closet, though. HAND.

  • It's a misnomer. It's called a "jaw harp" but it's referred to as "Jew's harp" for some strange reason.

  • maith an fear a Liam, is é an t-amhrán seo i measc na hamhráin is fearr liom - an leagan seo go háirithe

  • Wounderful song, is maith liom. Muy linda la cancion.
