this is why i buy 80 dollar walmart bikes----just toss a really bad one and buy another.
my hands are all greasy from trying bike repairs, my apt isnt even as chic as this bike repair shop, and the part time bike repairman in my hick town charges 20 bucks an hour.
The music track is unnecessary and annoying. Worse yet, no real instruction is given, we just watch some guy with a spoke wrench and can't even see the rim by the brake clearly. Yes, that area is hard to photograph, but again there was no instruction.
I'v busted spokes while riding and thats anoying as hell the brake pad rubs the wheel and it slows you down you can disconect the u brake pads for mean time but now your minus one brake...is there any truing than can be done without taking apart the wheel and replacing the spoke there an then??
@him3zz I believe if its bent towards the right, you loosen the right spoke (at the center of the bend) and tighten the left spokes one on each side of the right. If you notice, he only works on three spokes. If its bent on the left, reverse what I said above. check out parktool.com for details.
@F1r3F0xTh3Gr34t you can use a pair of needle nose pliers however the wrench costs about 2-3 $ and does make it a bit easier. @avalanch08 it can be purchased at almost any bike shop
And remember to keep your nipples lubed, guys. Not in the gay way, I should add. Well, if you want to lube your nipples in the gay way, too, that's cool....it's 2011 and we're mostly all easy going and well adjusted enough to deal with that...LOL
@LxHxCx661 oh it is.. especially with my busted ass bmx rim... i tried a 180 of a curb and i dinked the rear rim on a parking stump. now its a massively crooked that the wheel wont turn... its crazy!!
hahahaha he did say nipple.....gr8 video thanx for all the help ....other videos sucked ass.....this one was funny n had good info tht u cud use..thnx so much
Haha, thanks for the advice and help. Id like to remind you that you sound like this other guy from Urban Grower. Except that his profession is canabis.
ok so i ride bmx and i bent my rim on a gap and im going to fix it myself cause its not too bad but enough that i notice it when i ride but i was wondering if i do this and i jump will my rim bent back again or will this keep it pretty solid
Awesome! Thank you very much for this, this is very helpful. My back wheel has been giving me jip for a while and wanted to learn how to do this for myself.
Only thing is I don't have a Spoke tool, will a spanner work just as well?
@johnpro2 clock wise actually lengthens the spoke which loosens the spoke. Anti clockwise shortens the spoke and hence tightens it. It is also good for people to note that you only need a 1/4 turn at most on each movement to get it to move. Several smaller steps is much better tah one large one, it is very deceptive how much a little tension will move your wheel.
Yes ..all depends on the way you look at the spoke ..either from the rim towards the hub you tighten by turning the tool clockwise but if you look at the tool from the hub towards the rim the tool is now rurning anticlockwise.
Baically the spoke is secured to the rim by a small elongated nut which passes through the rim and screws onto the spoke in a clockwise direction when looking from rim towards the hub.
For better results, deflate your tire about half way before doing this. For BEST results & to be able to check more than just side-to-side truing, remove your tire completely, then put the wheel back on the bike and true like this. Also, using the brakes isn't the greatest because they move -- You can clamp a screwdriver, metal ruler, or anything else you find onto the seatstays with a vicegrip instead.
@mac777daddy the spoke tool i have is basicly a round ring with about 10 slots in it for all the different sizes and types of spoke nuts. they are really cheap. like i think mine was only about $10 from the bike shop
Impressive and Very useful stuff - thanks - but try it without the distracting music - some of us don't need a backing track to hold our attention - the opposite in fact.
it is a pleasure to watch someone doing this properly. never forget when a courier mate of mine fixed my wheel over a coffee ... took him 5 minutes to turn something that was unrideable to perfect true. truly an artiste!
lol I started doing this earlier but i got lazy so i stopped and took the rear brakes off. stupid thing to do yea but its just going to happen again tomorrow im pretty sure.
yes that is true it will happen again but only if you dont relief the pressure of the spokes .. see after you true your wheel squeeze the spokes together when doing so it will make the hub and the spokes work together in the new position
o and another thing sometimes its just better to take the wheel out and apply pressure on it and roll it around you can also apply pressure to the side .. not to much or you will bend it you just want the spokes to get in use to the new position that's all :)
i live near a jax bikes in so cal. please tell me that you do not true wheels like that for your customers. its a good quick fix idea, but if you do that for your customers, dont. use a wheel true stand please.

so is he turning it anti clockwise to tighten it and clockwise so loosen it, like a gas fitting or the opposite of a normal European nut or bolt?
howardb02 2 years ago
He is turning clockwise to tighten then he loosens it off a fraction so as not to twist the spokes.
Tighten spoke on side you want to pull the wheel and loosen on the opposite side, which is normally the next spoke ..
