It's funny--I live in an almost anti-gay town. If you see two men together, the immediate assumption is "oh, they're old army buddies," not "oh, they're a couple." I'm straight, I don't know any gay people, etc etc. Yet, I'm fiercely pro-gay rights. I think it's BECAUSE I was "sheltered": my parents didn't tell me how to think one way or another, and so I formed my own opinion based on what I found out as I grew up. It's funny--I live in an almost anti-gay town. If you see two men together, the immediate assumption is "oh, they're old army buddies," not "oh, they're a couple." I'm straight, I don't know any gay people, etc etc. Yet, I'm fiercely pro-gay rights. I think it's BECAUSE I was "sheltered": my parents didn't tell me how to think one way or another, and so I formed my own opinion based on what I found out as I grew up. That's the way all parents should treat issues, I think.
