I've been a huge fan since I was 14... but only Vol. 3 and AHIG are really listenable. For one thing, the sound mix is shit - they should have never had Shawn or Chris in the band. They never add anything, all they ever do is muddy up the drum sound with their clanging, when Joey is by far the best drummer. The guitars sound like a distorted mess, you can't hear the bass, and Corey's mask just makes him sound like a growling rabid dog.

The guitar parts are WAY better now, too.

@metallicakixtotalass I agree they evolve with each album but Iowa isn't shit. It's a great album and a milestone in heavy music. When it came out it sold more than Madonna and proved to the world that heavy music still sells. The music in it is simply brutal. Slipknot don't give a shit about commesiality. Corey is very important to the band's sound too, because him letting his influence from Stone Sour into Slipknot just made them sound richer, if more accessible. His growls are unique too.

Slipknot is the most leading metal act (probably next to In Flames) because they are willing to experiment. I really respect a band if it has albums like Iowa and then albums like Vol. 3. Nothing Slipknot has made is ever in vain. If it weren't for Iowa's borderline death metal sound we wouldn't have gems like "All Hope Is Gone" and Gemetria.
