Haha Led Zeppelin wipes their collective ass with the marginally talented Grand Funk Railroad. Look how many people LZ has influenced and has continued to influence. How many people give that much of a shit about GFR besides born again Christians and Midwestern Guitar Center employees? There were MUCH better American bands in the 70's.
I do not thing that GFR music is better that LZ music. But I like them both a lot. I think what happened in that concert was about LZ maneger and not about LZ players. On the other hand it was in US, if GFR would be in GB, I think the other way around would happen. Sorry about my English, and yes I am here watching to this video is because I like GFR (but not say LZ was less).
that manager should be dragged out back and beat to with in of his life...he used those guys.....what kind of man doesn't tell the band that you are rich, and used there money for him self
I was at the 1969 Atlanta Pop Festival. The emcee came out on the stage and said we got a band from Flint, Michigan ready to get things started today: Grand Funk Railroad.
The guys came out and just blew everyone away. They did 3 encores, and the crowd wanted more. The emcee said : "Listen, we really like this group, and we wish them a lot of success. But we got some very big acts that we paid for, and we got to get them out here."
It was a great weekend, & GFR got us started in the right mood!
i friggin love this band, but michael moore is a fat fuck loud mouth that should not be allowed anywhere near anything to do with making movies. All he does is sour it with his pedantic fucking attitude. "we were the people that went to die in those jungles" You didnt come anywhere near vietnam you fat fuck, so shut yer yapper
i friggin love this band, but michael moore is a fat fuck loud mouth that should not be allowed anywhere near anything to do with making movies. All he does is sour it with his pedantic fucking attitude. It makes me sick
I'll say it again - they were VISCERAL, not so much musical. You HAD to be there. Not every show was a great show, but the one in Seattle, Oct. 1971 was absolutely one of THE best I have ever seen ...
Terry Knight is a sleazeball! That is why Robert Plant wrote worse than Detroit. Zep hated doing shows there even though they woul make a ton of money. Last time was at Olympia satadium.
if were the chairman of the board of the r&r hof, i'd keep gf out forever. just on general principles, for ever having been affiliated with that cocky, scumbag knight
I never knew this was a war protest song until now and I've listened to this song about million times.
Why I've been so ignorant about this band? I mean I didn't even know Mark Farner could play that good. I know why they called it "American band", indeed they are.
Hate Led Zeppelin all you want! LOL. Just remember they are only behind The Beatles for all-time record and album sales. Really is too bad Grand Funk ain`t close behind, cause they rock, too.
@Meckipsychman agreed. lz were so well produced, they were near perfect sounding in the studio. i've always thought they sounded like a poorly rehearsed, garage band live. ha. but to be fair, their studio sound was so polished, it would be hard for anyone to emulate it (although jason bonham's lz experience comes damn close). gf shot straight from the hip. they were a wysiwyg, blues based rock combo. they sounded the same live as they did in the studio. their energy was translated much easier
And whats the second album called? Please tell me without going on wikipedia. I don't know, might be hard for you though; all you're Foo Fighters pop rock history might be stuck up there.
@GFRFan12 That song is called Destitute And Losin a track left off the Shinin On album and why it was left off i dont know its a monster track listen to it as soon as possible
In the 60's, english bands were the shit (Beatles, Kinks, Stones, Pretty Things, Troggs, etc..) which I like a lot. Led Zeppelin had the privilege to get the Yardbirds as a backup for assured popularity featuring Jimmy Page. It's almost unfair compared to three low-class young guys becoming an awesome power trio, and more than that, having LZ manager as a direct opponent putting GF out of the show completely. What an asshole. lol
Near 1965-1966, Mark Farner was in the Bushmen right? These avant-garde guys with long blond hair doing surprise gigs in a van almost? (There was a b&w video of them on Youtube, it seems it has dissapeared)
@sinning1966 A lot of people hated LZ's manager, Peter Grant, but his bands loved him. LZ didn't make the kind of business mistake that GFR made with Terry Knight.
Ritchie Blackmore once told that he in the 70ies never met anybody in the States who admitted having been and a GFR concert! - They were seen as an absolute primitive music playing band at that time. Times are a changing.
really? I never know RB said this, it would be interesting to see when and where he spoke about Grand Funk....i thought he neither didn't know them!!!
@gillan5 Really? Cause Ive always heard things like "youve gotta see 'em live!" and "theyre the best live band", etc. I guess different areas breed different opinions.
sure....they RULED. and i think many people were jealous at them, cause they were the people's band.....great musicians and great performers...they were my first band and i loved them like big brothers....and terry knight was good, the key person for GFR huge success...great hard rock band...
Tthe RNR HOF are total hypocrites. They don't care who we, the fans, think belong. They care that their pet fringe acts get in.
It's not the hall of cool critic adored bands...it is the hall of FAME and in 1970 and 1971 NO other band sold more records or concert seats. Further, they were the first band to have 10 consecutive gold records. That should be enough in and of itself. They'll get in one day, but the HOF voters hate "classic rock" and progressive rock bands. Elitist a-holes !
Zeppys manager fucked up! all he had to do was have Zeppy on stage first, the zeppy fans are happy. and so is Zeppy! then, Grand Funk appeares! the Grand Funk fans are happy! all tickets sold, no riot! both managers drinkin beer together with big smiles!$!
I loved these guys way back then, but lost track of them in the mid 70s. I've just been checking them out here. Never saw them perform before. OMG!!! So glad to see this little set. I'd love to see them live.
As much as I love this band, Terry Knight was within his rights to sue them for breach of contract. If the band had waited a few months to the end of the contract, they would have avoided that huge lawsuit. The situation with the original contract shows how important a good contract is. 20 years old? My parents would have sniffed that out right away.
Good points! Did you know Terry Knight was murdered in, I believe, 2004. I read he was nearly broke, living with his daughter in an apartment in Texas. He was stabbed to death by her boyfriend.
@mpjrdldn You'd have thought Bruce Springsteen would have learned a lesson from Grand Funk's naivete, considering what his first manager had him signed to and what he had to go through to get out of it when he realised he had little to no control over his own music. He said it himself: "It was my own fault. I knew what a lawyer was."
GFR blew the doors off of everyone in 71 including Led Zep. The garage was in Flushing, Mi. Yes they deserve to be in but we all know in Flint that they were the best. Michael Moore stinks. Your were a dork in school and you're still a dork!
COME ON PEOPLE LETS GET GRAND FUNK RAILROAD INTO THE ROCK-N-ROLL HALL OF FAME---WE BABY BOOMERS GREW UP WITH THIS BAND I HAD CHANCE TO MEET MARK IN MISSOURI IN 2002 One of the hardest rocking bands of that time
Why is someone that cares about the truth an asshole?????YOU MUST BE RICH.If you are you are not efected about the current downfall of our economy. So you hate people that do not make as much money as you??You are a person I will love to KILL.
true, I am not very familiar beyond owning their Greatest Hits. But nothing on Greatest hits is ground breaking or a new genre. They Certainly did not create hard rock! Pull up any article on the origins of hard rock, I'll send you new copies of the 1st 4 CD's if they are even listed in that. I suggest you aren't familiar with the origins of hard rock. that video says "closer to home" will be played forever. 70's AM Rock. Nothing wrong with that, but its not turn new fans on to GFR.
they never stole the thunder from Zep, are you kidding. GFR are fun. But one of the greatest bands in R&R history, please. Let's just talk American all time bands. they aren't even in the top...think about it. THey DON"t have the songs. NEVER stole the show from Zep. Songs they wrote for "hits", Im your caption, American Band...rest covers. They are fun though, but come on.
You need to listen to the first 4 GFRxR albums. Created a new genre of music. Hard Rock. Closer To Home is an album that will be played forever. You are not familar with their early stuff.
You have to remember that they stole the thunder from Zep in their home town. Also they were a cornerstone in the hard rock movement. 7 straight platinum albums the first American band to do that. To deny that they were special is just rediculous. They still hold the record for the fastest sell out of Shea Stadium, Does Zep actually hold any records, other than the most expensive tickets in the history of Rock.
By the way, I'm sure everyone knows by now that the opening footage you see was from the Texas Pop Festival, two weeks after Woodstock, and NOT the Atlanta Pop Festival, a month before Woodstock! (I know, because I have the Texas Pop Festival on tape--most everyone that appeared at Woodstock appeared at this little Texas shindig)
There are two songs that they played live from this period that I would DIE to hear a bootleg copy of--their versions of "Land of 1,000 Dances" and Hendrix's "Fire".
Here's the million dollar question for me: How did GFR and Zeppelin manage to play every major festival in 1969-1970 EXCEPT WOODSTOCK!!
Certainly, neither band was unknown by August 1969. You would have thought that Michael Lang would have heard about all the buzz in Atlanta for GFR back in June. What a perfect opportunity he would have had to get a band "on the rise" at Woodstock, considering the difficulty he had with other groups to commit to that festival.
As an artist and creator that saw all levels of the playing field, Mark Farner's musical diversity is a matter of public record. Rolling Stone Magazine ranked "I'm Your Captain/Closer to Home" as one of the top ten classic songs of all time. Way to go Mark!!! Rolling Stone is just now realizing what we Funk Fans have known for 38 years!!!
Wow! #5! Of the top 10 all-time classic songs, how many of those bands are in the Hall of Fame?
GFRxR not being recognized as one of the greatest rock bands of all time, with all their record breaking achievements, really has me steamed. I'm glad Mark grabbed his Messenger back from Cleveland.
I love Grank Funk heavily but don't know why they would have such a fucking lying scumbag like Michael Moore associated with them. I hate that fucking cocksucker
I'm sorry I shouldn't have cursed so vividly on your page. It's about the music and long live the spirit of Grand Funk. I just bought We're an American Band (REMASTERED)not long ago. Has an acoustic version of Stop Looking Back. Love it. Sorry again for the course language about the fat lying pig they have for a guest.
1. Sell out Shea Stadium twice in three nights, break The Beatles ticket sales record & set a record that has stood for 37 years.
2. Your first three albums went Gold in less than three months. Another first.
3. Become the first band to sell ten consecutive Platinum albums. Another first.
4. Have the number one song in America & number one album, already certified Gold before album has been oficially released due to pre-sales orders (American Band). Another first.
5. Being totally ignored by The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame as though you never existed. Another first that can no longer be ignored, therefore the petition in this video's description!
GFRxR never fit the industries perception of what a great Rock & Roll Band should be. Even though rejected by critics, The People loved this band. In the end, that is all that matters.
The pride of Flint, Michigan. Grand Funk Railroad's music and popularity rivaled that of Seger, Cooper and Nugent. It's just too fuckin' bad that they trusted a scum bag con-man like Terry Knight. These guys are legends and they didn't deserve to be taken the way they were. May Terry Knight rot in HELL. There is such a thing as "sweet justice".
Better than just a great band I seen them open for ZZ TOPP's El Loco tour and should have been other way around and I went to see ZZ Topp cause I was a fan of course and ended up being a HUGE fan of GFR also I still remember great drum solo thanx for the memories
The New York Daily News' Nationwide Readers' Poll for 1971.
Tens of thousands of votes were cast from every state in the nation. When the final score was tallied, Grand Funk Railroad had garnered a whopping 75% of the total vote as "Best Rock Group In The U.S." Left to split up the remaining 25% were: 2 Creedence Clearwater, 3. Jackson Five, 4. Led Zeppelin, 5. Three Dog Night, 6. The Who, 7. Sly, 8. Santana, 9.Chicago, and 10.Ten Years After!
GFRxR was generous enough to leave the remaining 25% of the "scraps" for the other top 9 bands to fight over. I think it's funny that The Might Zep was out-voted by Jackson 5. Hahahaha! What they get for pulling power plug on GFRxR in Detroit! This is an incredable stat that shows the dominance of GFRxR in '71. No wonder there were riots by fans not getting a ticket.
These kind of numbers can not be ignored any longer. Everyone sign the petition in this video's full description. It only takes seconds to do & please leave a comment.
The more I think about it, there needs to be a new R&RHOF. The one in Cleveland (SEWER, sorry) has become a total farce. It's sad, but great bands such as this are becoming more famous for not being recognized by that corporate minded, Rolling Stone Jann Wenner led, corrupt organization. I'm sorry people of Cleveland, but your spineless attitude lets this continue. Like what I say or not, it can not be disputed.
This channel has an agenda, & that is to promote Mark Farner & Grand Funk Railroad music. Any references to other bands is purely to define Grand Funk Railroad's role in Rock History. Anyone who is commenting to defame or belittle Grand Funk Railroad or Mark Farner with lies will immediately be banned from this channel. If you do not like the music of Mark Farner & Grand Funk Railroad, you are on the wrong channel & many Funk Fans & myself ask you to leave.
I was at that led zep concert at Olympia, 1969. I was not a big GFR fan before then, but they clearly gave Plant, Page and the boys a seriously hard act to follow. Cut off the power? What class.
Thanks so much for posting all these, Packed. Takes me back to the early 70's -- the red album -- incredible vibes often repeated but never duplicated! Rock on, Funkers!
Right-on pishkka. Except Zep was afraid to take the stage behind The Mighty Funk. The fact remains that no band could follow Grand Funk Railroad in their prime. No Band. They were, as I have said many times, A Performance Vehicle.
Yeaah, i posted the comment before I saw the whole thing, but imagine it - it's because of those things that i feel sorry for being born in the middle 80's.. I missed the golden years of rock and punk, but hey, i got tv realities now...
OK all you Funk Brothers & Sisters, I have posted some more rare Farner videos from '87. Search PackedFunk. There are more coming also. As with all my GFRxR/Farner videos, there is a link in this video's description to a petition to induct Mark Farner & GFRxR into The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. It takes only seconds to sign it. Come on all you Funk Brothers & Sisters. We need your signature & comments!
GFRxR have 33 gold & platinum ALBUMS earned & many gold & platinum singles. They also still hold many ticket sales records. NOT being recognized by The R&R HOF is a bitch-slap to every fan who bought one of those albums or concert tickets.
I signed the petition "proudly" as a hard core fan of GFRR. Grand Funk never fit the preconceived mold of the music industry rock band, they were blast by music critcs and press. And in the end when they were number 1 it proved that no one cared about the critics or the press and that was hard for media to accept. To this day they down play the greatest American Power trio in spite.
GFRxR created their own genre of music & The People reacted enormously by becoming the first band to sell 10 consecutive platinum albums & breaking ticket sales records wherever they played. fattdaddy3755, WALNUTS52, & myself are trying to correct the fact that GFRxR are ignored by The R&R HOF. Please join us by signing the petition in this video's description. Thanks everyone!
I have always thought Grand Funk Railroad was responsible for 'Heavy Metal". They owned the late '60's & early '70's with the hardest driving rock out there bar none. GFRxR created their own genre of music & the fans reaction was enormous. The 12 part HEAVY METAL documentary confirms this.
Rolling Stone recently named I'm Your Captain/Closer To Home one of the ten greatest songs of all time. Just another reason for this great American Band to be in The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. Thanks for supporting the petition everyone.
"Led Zepplin's afraid to follow Grand Funk". The next day they were kicked off the Zepplin Tour, but it didn't matter. THERE WAS NO STOPPING THEM NOW!!! Grand Funk Railroad Owned Led Zepplin!!! Hard Fact!!!
I loved Grand Funk... until I learned that Michael Moore liked them as well. So, I changed my mind. :)

Thanks for the post!

As much as I love this band, Terry Knight was within his rights to sue them for breach of contract. If the band had waited a few months to the end of the contract, they would have avoided that huge lawsuit. The situation with the original contract shows how important a good contract is. 20 years old? My parents would have sniffed that out right away.
mpjrdldn 2 years ago
Good points! Did you know Terry Knight was murdered in, I believe, 2004. I read he was nearly broke, living with his daughter in an apartment in Texas. He was stabbed to death by her boyfriend.
cnychu 2 years ago
Did not know! What a colorful life.
mpjrdldn 2 years ago
@mpjrdldn You'd have thought Bruce Springsteen would have learned a lesson from Grand Funk's naivete, considering what his first manager had him signed to and what he had to go through to get out of it when he realised he had little to no control over his own music. He said it himself: "It was my own fault. I knew what a lawyer was."

Terry Knight,
you greedy ass fat pig bastard.
PeterCRissKISSgod 2 years ago
Terry was stabbed to death in his own home, by his son in law in Waco, Texas in 2005 or 6.
No one should die like that, but he was still a total lying thieving cretin.

true, I am not very familiar beyond owning their Greatest Hits.
BSlash24 3 years ago
I have the origins of Hard Rock video posted. It's called GFRxR/Hard Rock-Heavy Metal. Check it out.
PackedFunk 3 years ago
they never stole the thunder from Zep, are you kidding.
BSlash24 3 years ago
You need to listen to the first 4 GFRxR albums. Created a new genre of music. Hard Rock. Closer To Home is an album that will be played forever. You are not familar with their early stuff.
PackedFunk 3 years ago

There are two songs that they played live from this period that I would DIE to hear a bootleg copy of--their versions of "Land of 1,000 Dances" and Hendrix's "Fire".

notfragile33 3 years ago
Here's the million dollar question for me: How did GFR and Zeppelin manage to play every major festival in 1969-1970 EXCEPT WOODSTOCK!!
Certainly, neither band was unknown by August 1969. You would have thought that Michael Lang would have heard about all the buzz in Atlanta for GFR back in June. What a perfect opportunity he would have had to get a band "on the rise" at Woodstock, considering the difficulty he had with other groups to commit to that festival.

This NEEDS to be said:
From the liner notes of the Live Album:
"I like the music the most, the beat...it gets to me, it goes through my blood."
They seem to get better with each album....the third was really good, and the live one's just as good as that one."
"It really hits the brain...the way they play music....THEY SMOKE!!!!!
These statements couldn't be any truer!!!
Long Live GFR!!!!!!

PackedFunk 3 years ago
Packed....its been 38 years. How does Rolling stone rank "I'm Your Captain" in-as far-as being a rock classic?
fattdaddy3755 3 years ago 2
Rolling Stone ranks I'm Your Captain as the fifth greatest song of all-time fattdaddy. Pretty good for a band that can't get in R&RHOF huh?
I am pretty sure Madonna can NOT say the same thing!
PackedFunk 3 years ago
Wow!

PackedFunk 4 years ago

PackedFunk 4 years ago
GFRxR was generous enough to leave the remaining 25% of the "scraps" for the other top 9 bands to fight over. I think it's funny that The Might Zep was out-voted by Jackson 5. Hahahaha! What they get for pulling power plug on GFRxR in Detroit! This is an incredable stat that shows the dominance of GFRxR in '71. No wonder there were riots by fans not getting a ticket.

Like what I say or not, it can not be disputed.
annaleee69 4 years ago 2
This channel has an agenda, & that is to promote Mark Farner & Grand Funk Railroad music. Any references to other bands is purely to define Grand Funk Railroad's role in Rock History. Anyone who is commenting to defame or belittle Grand Funk Railroad or Mark Farner with lies will immediately be banned from this channel. If you do not like the music of Mark Farner & Grand Funk Railroad, you are on the wrong channel & many Funk Fans & myself ask you to leave.
