They created a republic based on the classic Greco-Roman forms of democracy; just like the Europeans had intended a couple of centuries earlier during the Renaissance. However, the founding fathers also made sure that the errors in Renaissance Europe would not be repeated; especially monarchies and hierarchical forms of rule. However, what really makes America so strong and unique is the diversity of people. For example white Texan men take pride in the cowboy culture and it became an American symbol of masculinity. But that culture was adopted from the Mexicans, since English men and New Englanders never behaved that way. The same goes for the rest of America.

It is the international language most used around the world. The US and England are 1st and 2nd in number of published books in history. English is a lovely languange.

However, without the expansion of The West most of the United States would still be living in the Stone Age (which is not good either). Racism is the darkest history of America. Very true, but what you need to bear in mind is that portraying a man like Weyler as an animal was an opportunity for one country to criticize another country or individual. It suited their desires at the time. Another example of this was Germany criticizing the British for the treatment of the Boer prisoners during the Boer Wars, it was a chance for them to smear Britain, but they did not give a hoot over their actual welfare. As for racism, it was a normal thing back then.
