wow, this is a great piece! maybe you should mention "Oscar Peterson Trio" in the title so music lovers as well as art lovers will be able to stumble upon this.
It was composed express for that film... Norman Mclaren and Oscar Petterson planned toghether the structure of the music (composed before the images) in order to fit audio-visual patterns as good as possible...
By animation experts this is considered to be the best animation movie ever done. Entirely done directly on 35 mm fils but using all kind of techniques, drawings, scratching, blottings, etc, the guy was totally wild when he did that. In fact he was later diagnosed as bipolar and was probably felling like pure energy when he did it! Luckily he had his friend Evelyn Lambart that could control him a bit and it is probably due to her if the fil exist as a finished product.
that's interesting (bipolar) - I didn't know that. I agree that this is the best animation ever done - there are several moments in there that I can just sit and gaze with my tears flowing b/c its so amazing. He painted the soul of the music.
I've been looking for this for...for ever and ever and ever, let's just say that. :) Thank you so much for sharing -- Norman McLaren is truly my hero!!
