  • i used to drink in cheese but now its shire,,,(HULL REFFERENCE)

  • hull reference, how the fuk do u work that out?

  • there was a pub in hull in the late 80s early 90s called shire and another pub round the corner called cheese. and the dj in shire used to change the words of this song to ,,i used to drink in cheese but now in shire along with the tune to this song and im sure if anyoneone from hull who went in those pubs at that time would get my comment(HULL REFFERENCE) shit story i know but you did ask

  • Haha, I like that...!

  • I remember - That DJ was a knob but they were good times

  • I like the happy mondays ^^. I watched them go ghost hunting xD hillarious!

  • this song has one of the best guitar riffs of all time ya cunts

  • indeed the inspirals were class..

    still are..

  • inspiral carpets, roses, and the mondays.

three untouchables from the great days

    of MADCHESTER..

  • Aye..Mad days

    we wont see them again.

  • happy, the firsttttttttttttttt

  • classic dance

  • this is the really vid

  • classic 80's sweetness ,me likey.

  • Where did the Happy Mondays get their sound from?

Check out "Can - Halleluwah", the version that's only got about 5,000 views.

  • they are similar.

  • FUCKIN TUNE

  • I was the only Moondays fan in Iowa LOL

  • I was the only non-Mondays fan in Manchester. Much preferred the Roses and the Inspirals.

Appreciate now but didn't really happen for me back then

  • ha. Yeah I liked the Roses the best, I picked up on the mondays just because I knew they were from the same town as SR. in 1990 I had the feeling like I was born on the wrong continent, lol.

  • I looked this up today cos I just watched 24 Hour Party People on dvd. I though the Mondays were just too Manc stereotype druggies whereas Roses were kinda arty and the Inspirals wrote really catchy tunes. Appreciate this and Black Grape more now I am older.

  • Great point, great nick... I wonder what EXACTLY made something "Madchester" then? You're so right. Maybe New Order and the Mondays united on dance beats, but the Roses were just original but in-your-face rock. What makes it "Madchester"?

  • It wasnt matchstalk men, It was Kylie they were dancing to. The kids wouldnt dance to the correct tune(a bit too weird for them).

    Matchstalk men my arse(!)

  • i normally dont give a fuck bout music videos but this is brilliant

  • What mix of Wrote For Luck is this? It's not the album version, the vince clarke mix or the 'think about the future' mix.

  • vince clarke i think think i know its not think about the future thats like 9 mins

  • it's the laurence diana mix tho' the differences between this and the vince clark remix are not huge .

  • @bunglebonce its on the original 12" / cd single. There is this mix, another mix (both by Laurence Diana I think) and the original bummed mix and a 7" edit.

The Mondays took all the versions and mashed them together into the show closer that is WFL, the same as they did with Hallelujah, Rave on and Mad Cyril.

  • The video was recorded at Manchester "Legends" as mentioned at the start of the clip - the kids danced to Matchstick Men by Brian & Michaelas the Mondays hadn't finished WFL in time for the shoot - just for accuracy and all that...

  • Er. I was there. We got pissed, we tripped, we danced and we felt the love.X

  • FUCKING BETTER THAN PERFECTION

  • their best track! video made in the hacienda. (check out 24 hour party people movie)

  • Downham... I'll fight any man to say that they never got * upped to this. Bonnies? Tony Wilson on the f***ing decks?

    Large? lol... Jag's x

  • I hope none of those kids accepted party-smarties from Uncle Shaun.

  • Actually according to 24 Hour Party People they were dancing to Brian and Michael. But as the film (though brilliant) is 90% bollocks I wouldn't believe it

  • True but I'm sure I recall Paul Ryder saying something similar in a documentary. This was filmed at Legends wasn't it?

  • This video is really genius. And so is the mix. Fuck. They don't make em like this anymore...

  • the mondays fuckin legends!!!!!

i wanna trip and dance ¡24 hour party people!

  • this is of course 90's the year of birth does not make this automatically part of a decade

  • saw them do this as a last track at the k festival a couple years ago. best ever.. bless

  • 90's? you mean 80's!

  • 80s & 90s then,they were both brill

  • THE 90s,wot a decade

  • Except this was the 80s. :)

  • yes you are r8,they were both brill 80s&90s

  • Filmed at the old Legends nightclub in Manchester .. Bailey Brothers i think did the Vid

  • legends warrington?

  • no no legends manchester. now called 5th ave!

  • dont make em like this anymore top tune

  • god i wish i was twenty again these were good times and cool music

  • same here ! were the time go ?

  • midlife crisis? ^^

  • tune mannnn

  • fuckin qualiity mate lets keep madchester alive!

  • a lad after me own heart!

  • lol, the sounds of my childhood man. cant be beat, really.

  • Yeay was 17 when i first heard this!hadn't heard anything like it at the time!soooo coooooool!

  • tune

  • I wrote for luck...they sent me youuuuuuuuuuu!

  • im just gonna put me joe bloggs on..

  • when you were gettin joe bloggs i was getting blo jobs

  • Really just have to say it... Shaun Ryder is a genius.

  • pills and thrills man. you cant beat the mondays

  • i bet all these kids suffer from epilepsy now

  • im one of those kids ,no epilepsy here

  • Hey I was one of the kids in this video, aged a eight years old at the time. Remember my mum buying me a pair of polka dot braces and a ra ra skirt especially for the vid. Such a buzz seeing this footage!

  • Were you really dancing to match stick men like on 24 Hour Party People??

    A

  • That's what I've been told but to be honest it was too long ago to remember!

  • you mean you where to out your face to remember the 90's where just a blur of gettin out yer face

  • I remember at the time they said they had to put Kylie on to get the kids to dance. No way would kids that age or anyone really be able to dance to Matchstalk Men.

  • CLASSIC

  • Quality!!

  • it was brian and micheal-matchstick men and matchstick cats and dogs

  • It never really happened. Anyway, it's called Matchstalk Men And Matchstalk Cats And Dogs.

  • yeh and he lived a mile away from me

  • brillant

never seen this version of the video

    pop quiz

what song were the kids actually dancing to?

  • i can't remember but you can see it on 24 hours party people (the movie)

  • they were dancing to 'Matchstick Men and Matchstick cats and dogs", same BPM apparently (??)

  • That's a myth. Watch Tony Wilson's commentary on the movie, that never really happened. There's alot in the movie that isn't true. As Wilson(Coogan) says, 'If you have the choice of printing the truth or the legend, print the legend.'
