I do also enjoy the fact that it was her sound engineer (Correct me if I am worng, Symph!) that invented the hands free mike. He took a bendable mike and wrapped around a coat hanger that was used for the headband.
So true about "Never For Ever". That, and "The Dreaming" had to be her most fertile musical period. When I first heard "The Dreaming", I was in a record store, and the last cut, "Get Out of My House" stopped me dead in my tracks. Had to walk out with a copy.
possibly Kate's greatest song..and she namechecks the wonderful Sandy denny.Did kate ever cover a sandy song? Imagine her doing "who knows where the time goes"?
@erniebeggs No, not as far as I know. The only female singer I know Kate has covered was Tina Turner. She sang "Nutbush City Limit" a few times in 1977.
So touching and heartfelt this song and totally beyond anything that chart music in the last 20 years had produced. Kate is one of only a few that can touch you in such a honest and creative and poetic way.
@ Symphonyoffflowers I love what you have posted on here and some fantastic vid's but here beg's a question and the question is Are you the most talented female vocalist dancing lyricist to have ever walked this planet and I mean are you Kate?
@Lolalovesamba I don't remember Simon. I was PAC staff and I see from your other posts he was with the outside lighting contractor or tour staff. I worked follow spot for the show. I just listened to it again. So very moving.
great video and great song. i love listening to this one. i get such a nice visual of contented souls up there beyond our grasp enjoying themselves and at peace.
@Symphonyofflowers Yes, Bill worked for the same lighting company as my brother so we saw lots of him - he was a regular fixture at our house in between tours.
@JoCaliforniaUS@JoCaliforniaUS @JoCaliforniaUS Hi Jo, I was there too that night. You probably know my brother Simon who was working the show. Bill was a very close friend. I hadn't realised that Kate wrote this for him. I cried when I heard this for the first time a few moments ago. I'll look for you on FB.
Wow! So sad, but what a wonderful tribute to those who have passed on & probably an influence on her music. Thanks for putting this together w/ the lyrics & photos.
@diztanguy I'm sorry for your loss. I was there when Bill died. It should never have happened. The concert was a spiritual experience and the tragic event during the get out made it one that will stay with me always. It changed the way the trap was secured at PAC but it should have been foreseen.
A lot of people forget how strong the "Never For Ever" album is...every track just gorgeous, with a shimmering production. You can barely find the CD in the racks, and it's never been remastered or given the various 2-disc "deluxe editions" every other album seems to have received these days. I, for one, would love to hear an outtake or demo of this amazingly beautiful track...I feel like I'm floating every time I hear it, and the lyric is *so* heartfelt.
@mtopper66 ...."Never for Ever "is in my Top 20 albums EVER..Along with Doors/LA Woman..Television/Marquee Moon..Reel Union/Broken Hearted I'll wander..Belle & Sebastian/If youre feeling sinister..Bryter Layter/Nick Drake etc....I wanted to include a Sandy Denny but she made almost great albums..Almost..Sandy & Kate + Englands finest..Forget Amy Whitehouse & Edel & Duffy
Does anyone know anymore about the whole Bill Duffield incident? Sorry to sound gory about stuff but this is such an amazing song, and all the ideas about the saddening, and rightly so, effect it all had on lovely Kate, i.e. never touring again etc? Was anyone there at Poole Arts Centre on that awful, fateful evening, how did it happen? Please respond with more than's already on the net someone?
I was entertainment editor with a local rag and interviewed Kate before and again after the show, but before the incident. Met her again when she played what was then the Southampton Gaumont a week or two later. She introduced me to her mum and dad too. She was a lovely, lovely, warm young woman.
Poole Arts Centre has a winding floor so the venue can be 'flat-floored'. It seems Bill ran back into the darkened hall to check he'd left nothing behind and he fell into the exposed winding mechanism.
Thank you so much for that Batholane.......seems more and more awful the more I hear about the incident. Am not sure why I feel this way...maybe cos I can imagine all the work and expectation for the tour and then to have a death like that, I almost feel it's my fault in dome way even tho' I'm nothing to do with it whatsoever, it really is odd! So he didn't fall off a lighting gallery but into a hole in the floor, the drop must have been substantial to cause death, anyone else know anything?
@batholane I was there that night. Who are you? I worked follow spot and we were on the get out. My name is Jo Rolfe contact me on Facebook if you like. It was my first job in theatre. It made me who I am. If only I knew then what I know now about public safety. About life and death. You are right about what happened but it was preventable and so stupid.
@tomtomalfa I was there that night Tom. Who are you? I worked follow spot and we were on the get out. My name is Jo Rolfe contact me on Facebook. It was my first job in theatre. It made me who I am. If only I knew then what I know now about public safety.
I never made the connection before that Kate was referencing Minnie Riperton. For your American fans: Minnie Riperton was the mother of Saturday Night Live's Maya Rudolph.
Not only does Kate Bush reference Minnie Riperton by name in this song, but also, the melody of this song is deliberately similar to that of Riperton's biggest hit, "Loving You."
I didn't say it shouldn't be. In fact, the point I was making was the opposite-- that Kate Bush did a wonderful homage to Minnie Riperton by alluding to her melody as well as her name.
Yes, I decided to do that to make the video more consistent. This video needed very careful planning since I had to change the interval for the pictures so many times.
Thank you! Yes, I thought it would be nice to include the other artists mentioned in the song. I had begun planning this video back in January, but when the other video for that song was posted I decided to put it on hold. But a few weeks ago I decided to make the video anyway.
That first girl is Minnie Riperton, an American soul singer who died in 1979. Sandy Denny was a British folk rock singer who died in 1978. She was a singer in Fairport Convention, the most famous British folk rock band. You must have heard about Fairport Convetion?
Minnie Riperton is in the video because she is mentioned in the song. "Hello Minnie..." is a reference to Minnie Riperton.
When I decided to make a video for this song I also wanted to include pictures of all the other people mentioned in the song. That's why you can see pictures of Minnie Riperton, Keith Moon, Sid Vicious, Buddy Holly, Sandy Denny and Marc Bolan in the video.
The 2 vicious is for Sid & Nancy

@laikalynx "Moony" is Keith Moon and "Vicious" is Sid Vicious. I don't know why she mentioned him twice.
