I had two versions of Montezuma for my Atari 800 XL: one is this one, with the "Montezuma's Revenge" intro and the "Spanish Flea" music. In the end was this unbeatable boss.
The other copy had the following differences:
1) The player had a different hat (a Panama Jack). His walking sounded different.
2) There were 9 levels.
3) No intro. In the starting scree you could select the starting level (1-3).
4) There was no bat following you if you delayed too much in a screen.
5) The map had the same size, but apart from the first 20 screens it was very different.
6) In the middle lower room there was a pit that leaded to the "treasure". You had to collect all the gems you could before falling down to the next level.
7) If you loosed all your lives in the first level, you could restart in the same room by pressing the fire button. This only worked once.
The second game that you refered is the demo of this game, known as "Monty". Due the game was too large to fit on a cartridge, the people of Parker Brothers decided to cut it and Robert Jaeger, its programmer, never made a ending for this. So, you can't beat the boss, and in the demo there are 13 levels. No ending.
Oh man this game was my absolute favourite way back in the day, around the time of Digger, Dig-Dug and of course Double Dragon. But this one was the best by far.
This player made a mistake. I he hadn't open the door then he would have won. You shouldn't open the door but go on the ladder and wait for a tremor. Then go up to the box in the upper right part of the screen and voila!! ;D
yes, I saw a movie, somewhere on youtube, where the other guy didn't open the door, and then he climbed up, out of the screen :) But I have read about this game, and the article said, that this game hasn't ever been finished, so I think nor of the solutions are the proper endings...
Dere will be no reveeeeenge

To AI99: That was a very strange bug, you would end up trapped in the inventory/score screen.
I think it's obvious that this version of Montezuma was unfinished.
