@vegas2401 I'm surprised "Lester" didn't get a whip violation on that ride. It seems this jockey doesn't know the meaning of the term, "hand ride". And he had to give that poor horse a few more rapid smacks at the wire, even though he was clearly in the lead. A great jockey can win with minimal use of the whip. Check out the lousy ride that cost Nijinsky the Arc.
if not for the superior talents of Randy Paul Romero, the great mare doesn't win that race....RP gets her going even though she was NOT handling the surface at all...you could see Personal Ensign struggling with the footing.....Romero's brilliance won this race
AWESOME video, but lose that dreadful music and let us hear Durkin's great, dramatic calls!!! HIs call in the '89 Classic has got to be one of the best.
One of my favourites is Tiznow v Giant's Causeway. I couldn't believe GC was beaten in a head to head, but Tiznow became as much a favourite. Two great battlers.
@vidsee Giants Causeway was trapped wide the whole way round, and had ran alot further than Tiznow. Had he been drawn low, he would have won. You also have to remeber that Giants Causeway had never raced on dirt, which wwould have clearly had him at a big disadvantage. Tiznow wouldnt have got near him on Turf.
@TicinoParadise Nah, I thought that guy was way off base. Like I stated: horses either handle the dirt, or they don't. US bred Giant's Causeway, son of the legendary American sire Storm Cat (son of Terlingua by Secretariat) handled the dirt well, otherwise he wouldn't have been so close to winning - like US bred Sakhee a year later. Non-US bred Galileo couldn't handle the dirt. What that guy said about GC being "trapped wide" is a load of hogwash! Tiznow was just too strong.
@MANUTD4LIFE171 Excuses, excuses!! AMERICAN BRED Giant's Causeway was the great horse that he was because of his sire, the legend Storm Cat, the son of Terlingua, who was the daughter of the mighty Secretariat. As a US bred, dirt racing is in his blood, and he handled this surface very well, unlike Galileo, SYT and many other non-US bred horses who attempted the Classic. Horses either handle the dirt, or they don't. GC did, but the beast Tiznow was too strong for him.
@rcschumann Watch the Tiznow/Giants Causeway race again, and Giants Causeway is trapped on the outside the whole way round, were as Tiznow got the perfect trip on the inside, had GC had a better draw he would have won, no question. Im not desputing GC wasnt bred for dirt but the fact is he had never raced on it before the Classic, which put him at a disadvantage. Tiznow was a great horse, im not desputing that, i just feel GC was the better horse considering the circumstances.
@MANUTD4LIFE171 I watched the race again. Tiznow was only one post position inside of GC, and both had a good trip. Kinane made a well-judged move round the far turn and almost drew level with Tiznow in the stretch, but it was like trying to catch a freight train. Watch the big horse's stride and his cruising speed. Sakhee had the same problem catching him the following year, from the same position in the stretch - did Sakhee also have a "bad" trip?
Well, you gotta edit this video xD the 2010 breeders cup is like one of the best. I don't follow Racing but love horses, and Zenyatta ran her best race, even though it's the one she lost.
@TicinoParadise no no no- i mean Zenyatta, all the way. she would of got it if it wernt for the traffic Mike ran into at the beggining of the stretch. She ran every race amazing, and was a croud pleaser....always made u stand on ur toes..haha its like she knew every inch of that track, and knew exactly when to give it her all, so she wins by a nose. Everything had to go perfect that day-but didnt. Not saying Blame sucks, hes great too.
yeah hard to argue any of these, im sure everyone has their personal favorites, being from Canada, seeing Dance Smartly, Sky Classic, Chief Bearhart, even Regal Classic in the juvenile finishing second or maybe our most underrated horse With Approval just getting beat in the Turf....I do think that Inside Informations Distaff win goes under the radar for some reason, she CRUSHED a great group of mares the like of which never happens, if Arazis crush is there so should Inside Infos, imo.
@ballem - I saw Dance Smartly's Triple Crown, I was there for the Summer. The year prior also, and saw probably the best Canadian triple crown horse Izvestia.
@ballem - Fair enough my friend. Hard to argue..... both were incredible talents, but we just never saw the BEST izvestia. Challenged, pushed a bit more ...you know. He had incredible turn of foot even after 9-10f in the stretch. 3 yrs in a row Canada had incredible Triple Crown Winners. Not equaled yet. Cheers Friend :)
@TicinoParadise yeah the only reason I love with approval is he race better than Izvestia down south....same with Peteski, Peteski beat the Belmont winner and the Derby winner (sea hero) in the same race at woodbine..but with approval set a track record at belmont i think in the bowling green (maybe wrong)...but anyway nice chatting with you and bringing back the great canadian memories :)
Agree with almost all of these races but if it's a top breeders cup moments list where is Lit De Justice's amazing last to first win in the 86 sprint with Corey Nakatani who lost his sister the same week?
Alphabet Soup Grinding out his Classic win over Cigar, Awesome Again beating US HOTY Skip Away, and Ghostzappers Track record at Lone Star. Those would be my favorite Classic's. Zenyatta's Classic in 2009 was over a quality Turf group on Poly, and she cleared them rather easily. On Dirt Blame got it done strongly, and gamely in '10. The Classic always delivers. Maybe something can be salvaged this year with The factor in the Sprint, Cape Blanco in the Turf (if he doesn't go to Oz), Goldi.4
@TicinoParadise The Ladies could be very itneresting if both Blind Luck and Havre de Grace run. The Classic could be interesting if either or both of the ladies run there. Like you, I am looking forward to Goldi #4.
I remember screaming for Personal Ensign (at home, in front of the tv, no less) till my voice went all hoarse and scratchy. One of my favorite moments.
Personal Ensign's distaff was a lot like Zenyatta's '10 classic... trying to go undefeated on a track she didn't love, hanging back and closing desperatly at the finish. She just got there in time.
Everyone can have an opinion but it doesn`t mean you have to agree with it! Arazi was far and away the greatest B.C.winner of all;he travelled thousands of miles after running all season in Europe, and in the better races, and completely destroyed the American colts. The form was vindicated by the best U.S. colt,Bertrando, finishing second.Had Arazi not been in the field,Bertrando would have been a five length winner and all the yanks would have been shouting about him - and also, where is Miesque?
I think my favorite breeders cup moment would be either the Classic in 89 with Sunday Silence or 2001 with Tiznow , but I really like the one with Personal Ensign. She was a freak
people who add these dumbass comments clearly can't read. this video is not the personal list of the poster. breeders cup made a list and people could vote for their favourite races. apparently skip away didn't make it into the top ten. so stop with these comments and just watch this awesome video.
You got Personal Ensign right, but omissions like Skipaway are a travesty. Suggest you stick to NASCAR. And your soundtrack is far too overpowering. These races stand alone and do not warrant the distraction of foreground music.
@Kinsail lol at ur dumb azz comments..this was a great vid ..and for skippy..bro that horse beat no body in classic and was prob the worst classic ever...and very boring...def not top 10..FACT
@bigfred3217 Maybe you should do just a bit of homework before you spew off your mouth Freddie. Last I looked, Skipaway was still #3 in all time North American earnings, behind only Curlin & Cigar. You DO remember Cigar? Ya know, the horse who LOST the JCC to Skippy? Ring a few bells there, moron?
@bigfred3217 Just a couple more facts for you Fred: When Skippy won the BCC, he set a new race record of 1.59.16. If you think Deputy Commander, Behrens or Touch Gold are "no body" horses, you sure don't know much about TB racing. (Not 2 mention Skipaway getting 2 Eclipse Awards as well as Horse of the Year during his career...)
@Kinsail lol lol at times so did quality road at that bull ring jioke of a track gulfstream and also wild again did it better on same track at hollywood park.......monarchos ran 2nd fastest derby i am sure you got him top 10 too huh..you all bushleague rookies talking shit with no cred..gteee you all like uncle mo this year too huh.. like the factor and twirling candy this year and the 12k claimer that broke track records@SA and the world record in the 50k stakes at turf paradise 2 years ago.
@jimmygreggs - No now you can add the 2010 Classic which would be more appropriate for this, considering most clips are close battles. But you wouldn't want that because Blame won.
Bloody awful music and where is the wonder filly Miesque? If anyone ever needed proof that Yanks only ever see one side of the coin, this is it!Smallest book in the world; The American Book of Arc Winners!
My races would have to be 2001 classic 1995 distaff 2003 duel between Sardula and phone chatter Destert stormer's sprint and Flanders nipping Serena's song at the wire
21shergar: Loved the Pebbles and Royal Academy races too, but unfortunately, I can't have everything in the top 10. My favorite line from Durkin from Pebble's victory was, "Pebbles, she'll need racing room," since it demonstrated that Durkin knew that she was a major threat if she got out.
Solid list, though I would rank the 87 Classic duel between Ferdinand and Alysheba number one. Here is my list: 1. 87 Classic 2. 88 Distaff (Personal Ensign running down Winning Colors in the mud) 3. 84 Classic ("Wild Again does it") 4. 88 Classic (Alysheba . . . "America's horse") 5. 91 Juvenile (Arazi) 6. 89 Classic (SS and EG) 7. 03 Turf (Johar and High Chaparral dead heat) 8. 93 Distaff (Holywood Wildcat over Paseana) 9. 01 Classic (Tiznow repeats) 10. 86 Turf (Manilla)
i have watched every BC race since its inception, the only races I could think to add, but which to bump I dont know, Ellio's BC sprint in 84, Pebbles 85 Turf, and the 86 BC Mile. But loved the order you chose and all of those races where incredible!
definitely personal ensign's distaff was the best, but i think inside infromation's 1995 distaff should have been included too. Tom Durkin make the races sound much more exciting
Lester on Royal Academy would always be in my top ten .Thanks for posting
