  • Not bad, just make sure you have a good sense of rhythm in anything you play. As a bassist, this is especially important. Holding down a groove the goal of a bassist. A groove sounds groovy, because it has a solid sense of time. Timing cannot be stressed enough.

As for the pick, dont worry about it. We all know Jaco used his fingers and never a pick, but so what.? I don't see anything wrong with it. Personally I never use a pick, but thats preference. Hope you are still playing. Best of luck!

  • sounds good. however, if you want this song perfect, play it at a slower tempo, and dont use a pick. follow along to the regular song. you will get it eventually

  • You're on to something during the chorus. Keep using the pick cuz you're developing a style.

  • Pleease do not pick a jaco pastorius song!!!! It's just...wrong! Picking in my opinion isn't right 4 bass, maybe 4 metal but definatelh not this!!!

  • xd lol! akslas

  • Don't play Jaco with a pick - wrong tempo - no groove or feeling - but these are - thanks to God - things you can work on - some people just have lacks that can't be worked on :/

  • You have to practice a lot..

    You are out of tempo.

Improve in technique, you have to work on that..

And agreeing with the other comments, dont use a pick for this sort of songs..

For this songs you must use the bright of your fingers, not very easy anyway..

  • real cool you learned the chorus as well as the main lick. props for a good overall feel, i would just recommend not playing with a pick when playing funk, and if you do try a more relaxed tempo.

    good luck =]

  • happyslappysoong-> No, this is sparta !

  • You are not dead hand, but you have to drop the pick or play other music. For example: death metal:). I think you will be good bass player in this funky style. Good luck!

  • perdon pero... una cagada

  • Ah, i almost forgot, this is youtube.

    THIS SUCKS.

  • Please, never post anything like this again.

  • I know you're not serious - it's been 2 years since you put this up - you already sold the bass and quit playing to work on that career at Mc Donald's, right?

  • I'm going to agree with the other youtubers.

The pick is making your notes too staccato so you're really out of luck in the feel department.

There's a few books w/ CD's that you can buy that will teach you his songs at a good tempo for like $15-20. You should get one of those and spin it at a slower tempo to catch the feel. Your feel is too fast and too abrupt, it's not relaxed like the song is.

  • Vale la pena verlo!!

  • get the pick out of there..... you have to feel it.....

  • Lose the pick, I have to agree. And also, RELAX!! Don't play fast for the sake of playing fast. Slow it down and really LEARN it, right now it seems like you are just "wiggling your fingers" as Jaco would say.

  • that was just wrong

  • ¡Pero qué mierda joder! Devuélvanme 40 segundos de mi vida. :(

  • what a shit job, bro, stick to Mcdonalds

  • why are you using a pic for jaco? and you need to improve on the timing.

  • Lose the pick...

  • Fucking butcher !!!

  • Not bad. IMO, finger-picking is a must for Jaco. Work on timing too. See my version if ya want.

  • dude you're butchering jaco

  • pure crap, no groove, no sense of timing, not funky at all.

  • dude like this isnt bass playing!!!! it really killing the true song... i need a beer

  • lol, i prefer finger style but lay off him, he can do both styles well, shut up an let him play, he's good

  • Arghhh pick suckzzzzz

    It's sound .. shit

  • SUCKS!

  • agreed

  • you shit stain. take this video off already.

  • you use a pick!!!!!

  • hey, throw your pick away!

  • oh dear...

  • guitar playerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

  • is a trash "¬¬....

    use the finger "¬¬

  • YOUR A PUSSY. FINGER PICK OR GTFO!

  • burn your pick

  • big difference between playing music and playing notes. learn how to mute and put down the pick.

  • um ever heard of up beats? MAYBE GROOVE perhaps? Okay now think about you and your silly rendition full of nothing but over playing. bahah

  • you're still a pussy

  • There's a lot of muted notes in this song, which is pretty much impossible to do with a pick. I'm surprised you did this well with a pick. Lose the pick, and you'll be surprised at how good you will be. You have potential.

  • im not knocking you for using a pick but it's the soft touch of the fingers that make the groove of that song, you got the notes pretty much right though

  • Since no one is saying anything helpful, I'll try. For one, don't let that D# ring out when playing the verse riff. Two, don't let your right hand control your left. It seems you are tailoring the tempo to fit your picking speed.

  • You, silly boy, don´t you think that you should play this song without pick, jaco never used to play with pick so I dont think that technique is aproppiated to play a Jaco song. You should try to play with the hands just like Jaco made it.

  • You just made Jaco rotate in his grave.

  • you suck balls, and the pick makes you seem like a gay bitch who just got her nails done. lose the pick and you might even be slightly better but not that much. you still would suck balls. if you think that you are gonna be as good jaco, thats sad and you should just give up.

  • lose the pick

  • dude, siiiiiiiiiiick

  • Nope.

  • c' est clair que c' est pas super ! you should make it groove, even if you play it with a pick, don't go so fast ! please work on your rythm and on your feeling, man !

  • C'est moche !

  • Play that funky music, white boy! It's a shame that a few tight asses are going to beat on you because you're not as good as the greatest! Surprise! Keep trying, young man. You've got nads to put yourself out there for all to see. More than the rest of us in our comfy little rooms. The more you play the more the instrument will show you. Live & learn.

  • Dude, lose the pick, train on rythm and feeling!

  • This tune should really be played with fingers. You have a pretty nice picking technique, but playing Jaco is not all about speed. It's about the groove.

  • Im sure Jaco would surely choke if he knew this is what has become of his work.

  • wow...what's with all the hating on some cat who at least has the balls to TRY...perhaps all you haters need to submit YOUR renditions and show the world how it ought to be done...can't wait!

  • thanx man, the honest reason why i did it with a pick is cz it was to fast for my fingers at the time, i kno u cant exactly get the same sound, tone and feeling, by using a pick but its not meant to be exactly like Jaco, its just another version

  • ditch the pick, wtf is with people and picks and basses nowadays! PLAY WITH YOUR FINGERS, and stop ruining good jazz!

  • what?? you play a Jaco's tune with a guitar pick??? sorry man, but you did a bad job...

  • You should go back and listen to the original and try to pick up on the groove/feel. You've managed to straighten this thing out so much that Lawrence Welk would be amazed.

Losing the pick and exploring the use of muting should be your next adventure.

  • not bad but lose the pick bro.

  • pick, no points out of 10 sorry man. Pick ruins it all. Its like a bear is raping that song, thats how bad a pick is. You got chops, but you gotta show it.

  • I wish I knew martial arts so I could bash your head into the sidewalk like Luc Heven did to Jaco.

  • what the fuck.

  • fuck the pick!

  • bitchin dude but to keep with tradition, fuck the pick and SLOW DOWN! And one thing, jaco never lets a pause into his music, always play, dont let the line stop. But all in all, Jaco would shit if he heard u:)

  • Ignore anyone who tells you 'real' bassist don't use picks. People with that attitude towards an instrument are simply ignorant. People of the picks are for pussies school of thought are the equivalent to those who frowned upon the use of electric bass rather than upright when the instrument was new. This philosophy comes from stale musicians who are no more than drones of their supposed heroes. Play in a manner that accomplishes whatever it is that you want to say musicially.

  • no dude,

picks just ruin the tone of the bass

  • this is verry good. i also play with pick, but some things sound better if they are played with fingers. i think this is one of those songs

  • Very cool, a different vibe on one of the *classics* of electric bass. Nice job, and big balls to play it pickstyle as well! :D

  • Again, slow down and play the song with some feeling. Put down the pick too man, this song has to be played stuccatto with the fingers.

  • Hey BassRabbit,

At first I thought OMG no! Then I thought fuck it - why not ? Jaco would prolly have been playing screamcore by now if he'd have lived! So anyway thanks for posting it - it made me think outside the box for a moment!

    Guy

  • MMMM to play jaco it would be better if you try to play with your fingers... maybe playing with a pick is good for other things like punk or something like that but not with jaco..

  • Not bad, but i actually miss two things:

the tone from an e-bass and the groove

Try it without the pick and slow down, i bet it sounds a million times better!

  • "use your thingers... " that's what Jaco wouldv said ;)

  • Great, well done. Nice to hear a different take on a classic. JP would have thought it was cool, he was clearly up for trying new things, unlike the million of JP clones out there. Marcus used his thumb for Teen Town and I'm sure plenty of people would have issued the same comments as above at him;then again he did nail the notes, rhythm and feel, but keep at it, nail it and re-post it (with a click track).

  • pastorius com palheta? fala sério

  • MAAAN WTF IS THAT... you play very well... but MY GOD... please dont play Pastorius' songs with a pick !... this is a disgrace to the master's himself

  • That was really good, I'm going to try and learn that song now.

I play with a pick as well, everyone saying "Picks are for losers" are dickheads.

Anyone can play with a pick if they want.

Keep the bass up, that was wikkid.

  • Agree with the pick comments. Jaco was the master of finger-plucking. He did use the whole fretboard and lots of harmonics. He was other-worldly. I once sat in a studio control room and listened to a reel of Jaco playing piano to try to save some ideas. He had knocked on the door and asked to come in and lay down some ideas. It was beautiful. His voice was haunting. Your piece is a nice tribute to him.

  • Main REASON...Your Tone will be so much BETTER. End of reason!

  • mate average not happy with the use of the pik at all how in gods name can you play with one, its so constricting. I agree with slapbass man, jaco will be turning in his grave. Other than that all good. My fave track, with jaco, is wayne coxs' "amelia"

  • ye i agree i shouldnt use a pick on this song, but i do use my fingers, if u check out my other vid, i only use a pick here cz my fingers arent that fast,

  • very good guy!

  • DUDE LOSE THE FUCKING PICK JACO IS PROBABLY TURNING OVER IN HIS GRAVE. Picks r for pussies but other than that it was good but the breakdown is plays mostly on the higher frets that the only problem You are good man

    PICK=Dildo

    Cause picks r for pussys

  • Man, I don't usually leave feedback one videos but one big, gaping problem with your playing is the fact you're using a pick. Picks are fine, Anthony Jackson used a pick and he's one of the Bass heavyweights. Jaco didn't use a pick, therefore you shouldn't either if you want to get the feel right.

Ignore 'Bassemup', he's probably just a little jealous because he put his own bass so far up his own ass he can't play it anymore.

  • You've got the right hand down, but what you're doing wrong is that you leave out all the ghostnotes, that make Jaco's style so very "Jaco". Don't mind the people who say you should start fingerpicking. A pick is just as good, but try to get the ghostnotes in there.

    Good luck.

  • Thanks for the advice, BassRabbit. Peace.

  • Hey man, it really isn't that hard to adjust your truss rod, as long as you do it in quarter turns. Never and I mean NEVER adjust it in more than a quarter turn at a time. The only way you will help that buzz(assuming that the neck is too straight or to bowed) is to adjust your truss rod. It is a valuble thing to learn to do yourself and really isn't as hard as bassrabbit makes it seem. He is right tho, you can screw up ur bass if done wrong, but if you're careful it is rather simple. =

  • thats right, delete my critiques. pussy.

  • You didnt do too bad on this at all in my eyes, but, yeah I agree... Try finger picking. It really gets you into your playing, and it really does change the sound quality. But overall, not a bad job

  • I agree. Hey do you know what the problem is with my bass? Thanks.

  • I have a fender precision bass and it seems no matter how high I raise the action, there is always fret buzz when I play on the higher frets. Do I need to adjust the truss rod? I would really appreciate your advice. Thank you.

  • Don't touch your truss rod, that might be the thing to do if changing ur action doesnt help, but only let a pro touch ur truss rod cz if u mess up u cd totally fuck up ur guitar.

  • to adjust the truss rod hold down e string on first fret, then hold down string on last fret, then using a feeler gauge set at 0.12 see if it slides under the top of the 8th fret and under the string, if so then neck should be set

  • the rhythm is meant 2 be different to Jaco, because i can't do his rhythm with my fingers and doing the same rhythm with a pick would be pointless.

  • Put that gay pick down and get a decent bass...your lame and you put no feeling into anything you just played. The sound quality is horrible because you're using a pick.

  • I don't mind picks but any one who plays Jaco with a pick is crazy. There are many others who can play this like Jaco did with fingers, it isn't one of his more dificult songs. Rule of thumb, if you can play teen town with your fingers you can play this. I really hope you weren't implying that you are the best at this son besides Jaco cuz that's what it came out like.

  • I didn't mean to imply i was the best other than Jaco, i was basically saying there arent many around that can play that with fingers, not around here anyway, it is faster than Jaco's version, but its also a different rhythm.

  • dont take any notice of these gimps. i thaught you were really good. i use my fingers because you get better bass and theres no pick to lose. a load of my mind. give it a try though you can get so much controle over the bass that way and theres no pick to drop. these clowns only use picks cos evryone else does. the method of using your fingers goes back to the days of double bass. this all sounds really dirty!

  • thanx rainbow kissing, i do use my fingers more often than using a pic, i do in my other video, using a pick does hav a more dirty sound but the 10watt amp and the phone recording it didnt exactly help. lol i play double bass as wel but only 4 a year.

  • nice but you should really start playing with your fingers you will get more of a feel of the music

  • seems he started a while ago - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aAwQ-B681SQ

    good crossroads version
