To add apps from the app listing to Favourites tab you just right-click on an app entry and select Add to Favourites. Oh and apps can appear in more than one category because sometimes they can be classified into more than one category and then you can find it more quickly.
This transparent Widget is called Folder View (Shelf is a little bit different). And it is really awesome. It can even show folders from another computer on network. Great for web page work.
I never liked KDE, it always crashes on my system and I don't like the scrollers on the side of the windows.
