prebuild external drives are shit. the USB controllers always die. i've had the same thing happen. you're much better off buying an internal hard drive, then buying an enclosure that doesn't suck to put it in. that'll be much less of a headache
might have been a good idea to drill a hole through the drive before tossing it. Never know what kind of weirdo is gonna dig through your trash. That's what I always use.
