  • That was beautiful,

I used to sing this in my choir, such a moving piece of music,

brilliantly sang in this recording x

  • It was 'way out in Flanders at the back of the line

They were talking of sweethearts they all left behind

When one Irish soldier says, "I have a queen, And she works in John Ross' of Bonnie Woodgreen."

So if ever to Ulster you chance for to stray

    There's a neat little fact'ry near Ballynafeigh(?)

Where there's weavers and winders all rosy and clean

And they all wear white aprons in Bonnie Woodgreen.

  • Bonnie Woodgreen is between Antrim and Ballymena and John Ross's is still there. Kells is about 3 miles away if that.

  • Who is this choir? Flawless performance.

    Bravo!!

  • @prs420 The arrangement for this particular piece is by Stephen Hatfield. I'd hazard a guess to say that the choir singing is the Cantilon Chamber Choir as they sound extraordinarily similar- however any choir performing his version well can deliver a seemingly flawless performance, given the fact that the arrangement itself is flawless :)

  • It's WW1, he signs up for the Ulster Division "Carson's Army" - like thousands of others from Co. Antrim like my Grandfather. Brings a lump to the throat. Beautiful song. Thanks.

  • undoubtably the best choral song i have ever sang!

  • favorite song I sang in HS! love love love this song. The first time I heard it I cried...

  • @CharlieGrl09 I agree and I recognize the choir...it's my choir. I'm 100% sure of it. I can hear my friends voices along with my own alto 2 voice.

  • We just got this a week ago and i already have it memorized. Thank you very muchh for putting this up it helped alooot! x]

  • It's a WWI song. The second verse as I recall, is more often sung:

"I went up to Kells Barracks and then made my way,

to enlist as a soldier and to fight for the King."

You couldn't enlist to fight for the King in WWII, and definitely not in the Irish Republic!

Great Song, but check out a better version on "Music at Matt Molloy's".

  • I am singing this song with my choir in high school, and the last time we sang this, our director cried!

  • This song is gorgeous. My choir is learning it and I find it mystifying.

  • I have the sheet music right here and it says WWI, not WWII

  • It's WWII. It says so on my music and everywhere else I've looked online.

  • Correction, I read it wrong. It is WWI. Sorry about that.

  • I'm pretty sure this is actually a Great War song...not WWII. But that aside, great song.

  • i love this song. my choir is singing it for contest this year.

    it's so incredibly sad.

  • do you know who is singing this?

  • i'm trying to learn this song right now for chior, thanks for putting it up, it has really helped me a lot. =]

  • I sang this song with my choir this year.

I love it. I thought this song was a little slow, though, which results in the song droning on and on..

    It's beautiful, though.

  • i have sung this song before with my chior it is so beautiful every time i hear it it give me goosebumps. the descants are gorgeous
