@verbenco ~ Take a hike! People like you take FAR too many junior college classes on being a moron. Take a break and do me a favor ~ have your freakin' internet connection TURNED OFF!
so i linked this on my facebook page only to have my dad tell me he was there when it happened.... 40 years later and that man's life still inspires me...
You MUST understand the significance of this song. James Taylor has taken a song, from American forklore, slowed it down and is singing about the Suzanne that he first sang about in his Fire & Rain recording. A woman who passed from his life when she died in a plane crash. Cash, when this was filmed, had absolutely no understanding of what this song meant to James Taylor. Once you realize the pain in this song you will then, and only then, appreciate the beauty of this performance.
@MrRonnieG i hope readers forgive me for writing something unkind on a music page but MrRonnieG' arrogance caught me on a bad day. Probably he was one of the dilettantes posing as a freak back in the old days. these dilettantes used to bash Ringo's drumming and promoted snobbery . None were actually musicians.
This video stands on its own and no one MUST understand anything about the personal lives of the performers to appreciate this or any performance. BTW the song is by Stephen Foster.
You might think your proving something for Johnny Cash but you just dished on perhaps the greatest American songwriter ever to live, do your homework before you act like a child.
what's your point? the story behind this being sad doesn't change the fact that he still did a bad cover. you're just being self righteous. feeling sorry for him and the woman who passed away doesn't change my opinion, sorry.
he definately comes off as humble and shy (probably nervous) but there has to be a part of him that even back then said "I AM THE MAN!" and people really dig me and such...
this is really moving. what a display of talent and real music. this video is only 2:40min and contains more honesty and entertainment then all mainstream albums of the last 10 years together. real class.
I really wish James' studio version of this from the Sweet Baby James album was on here. I only have it on vinyl (not like that's a bad thing) and I wish I could listen to this everywhere I go :(
Everyone DOES realize he is singing about the Suzanne Schnerr, the young woman he had befriended who's sudden death he sings about in his 1970 hit, "Fire and Rain." By slowing down the tempo of this song he is pouring his heart & soul out over the loss of this special person. When I listen to Taylor sing this, within the context of the real meaning it appears to have to him, it just breaks my heart.
This very song is in the clubcodex of many Belgian studentclubs. The great majority of Commelitori (members who arn't in there first year anymore) memorized it compleetly.
Johnny Cash had such a good tv show...such a great array of talent back then, and Johnny was flexible enough to showcase them all and sing with them all. Can you imagine a show today with that much real talent?

@whosthatlittleoldman He sang this in memory of a woman he knew who had died. Check the story before you knock something done in memory of the dead.
