I love river spearing. I have been lake spearing also from a boat but never on the ice. Yes, It is illegal (at least in MI) to spear game fish (pike included.

In MI. you can legally spear Pike, Muskie, Whitefish, Smelt, and even perch on Lake St. Clair.

If you want to go spearing i reccommend you make a shiquebob stick crossbow with a string attached to the ammo and i suggest shooting perch on the shore with them. They do put up a little fight.
