PTA will win next year for his upcoming masterpiece 'The Master'. Just wait and see. By the way, the Coen Brothers have proved they're brilliant directors and 'No Country for Old Men' is their best work to date.
Paul Thomas Anderson is one of the greatest living directors, and just barely 40. With his talent and ambition, it's inevitable he'll get his Oscar. Anyway, I'm not bashing the Coen brothers, they're fantastic and this was a deserved win.
The Coen brothers have their own genre, IMO- the "inept victim" film. That is, the criminals are inept and stupid because the victims are even more inept and stupid (e.g. Burn After Reading, Fargo, etc.) Maybe that's just me, though.
I came to this page to see what kind of psychos make such an evil movie with no redeeming moral value at all. To think from the time they were 12 to now and that sick piece of crap is all they could come up with. And here not even a comment to this end. What a horrible place and time in the history of creation.
@DonRMB no it isn't man, the master is 2013 release. this pisses me off because i was waiting for years for the next paul anderson picture. i mean god this pisses me the hell off. i wish paul anderson would get his crap togather and not waste his talent by taking 40000000 years to make 1 film. and i also wish he would quit smoking, i really dont want him to die young.
@malows1234 NO, it has been announced for a December 2012 Release, they finished Production/Filming a couple weeks ago. Now onto the Post-Production Process!
Disappointing that PTA didn't win for TWBB. I especially can't believe he lost in the best adapted screenplay category.... I mean, really? Well, hopefully he'll win for "The Master".
And the Coens deserved it over Paul Thomas Anderson. Anderson is a great director too and did a great job, but he was overshadowed by Daniel Day Lewis's performance. It was the Daniel Day Lewis show. No Country For Old Men is just a showcase of skillful direction. Just look at the way they direct that hotel shootout. The Coens deserved it.
@Tigerlily21 wat kind of horse shit is that? paul thomas anderson was overshadowed by daniel lewis? oh yes i see how it works, martin scorsese was overshadowed by robert de niro everytime right? so great actor in a movie, means the director EXCELLENT job doesn't matter right?. look i love to watch the coen brothers win every award. but this was not their year. they should have won for fargo. i mean paul thomas had this on such a lockdown. this was paul's year. but i agree coens got robbed alot.
@malows1234 Let me explain, there are certain films where the performance is better than the movie. Look at every Meryl Streep film. Raging Bull as a whole is a masterpiece. I think the reason why the Coens beat PTA is because NCFOM was a more of a showcase for the Coens skills, while people that year saw TWBB as a showcase for DDL. They were talking about DDL not PTA and some think PTA rips off Kubrick and other directors too much. He did NOT have this on lockdown. Both great films anyway.
It was about time the Coen brothers were recognized! I can't believe the Academy ignored some of their most brilliant work like Barton Fink and my fave of all time, Miller's Crossing. They are geniuses and the best filmmakers working and we should she proud to have geniuses like them provide us with great storytelling and filmmaking so often in this crappy film era.
i thought the film was good but you really had to look at it different besides focusing on the story.. you had to pretty much look at the theme of the story..

FARGO was a good movie too but it didn't win teh oscar because it was very annoying. every moment there was a 'yah'. that made the movie quite horrible
Historic moment. I initially felt a little disappointed at how casual they were when accepting it, but after repeated viewings, you can tell that they're quiet because they're nervous and let's not forget that Joel Coen said "We're thrilled". So honestly it's just their own eccentric way of expressing gratitude.
overrated -_-... have you seen all their films? to think these guys made raising arizona to fargo to no country to name a few movies, i can't figure out why you think their overrated... unless you feel it important to want to be different than everybody else... these guys are loved by film viewers and makers around, unlike say tarantino who makes 1 good movie and just has his bandwagon on his nuts all the time... coens make 100% great american pictures
@SpringSauce23 agreed. Plus The Coens have established their own style. From film to film it just seems like PTA is always aping another filmmaker for each project. I don't know what his own style is. But There Will Be Blood is his best film yet, so I hope it means he's getting better.
@Tigerlily21 dude his style is his own, pta does does what pta does. noone in filmmaking treat their characters like pta. NOONE. he has a way of exploring his characters, that is absolutely unique. his characters are not explored ever in contrast to other characters in the film. for example, in boogie nights all we see are porn stars, so we cant really judge them agianst each other, instead we have to judge their actions by our moral standards, whereas in other movies there is a good and a bad.
@malows1234 He's not the first to show characters that way. There are plenty of examples of films where you only see characters in their world. Watch gangster films buddy.
@SpringSauce23 1 of the greats? is that fuking joke? pta is on his way to match wits with Stanley Kubrick himself. i dont know what you mean "one of the greats"
Jesus, guys. The Coens are very private people, that's way they normally are. It's not they were 'so full of themselves' or anything, they also twitch a lot when they talk--they are on a completely different wavelength than us untalented forks.

they seem sooooo full of themselves up there on stage, they just won the most coveted of awards for film and they play it off as though it was nothing. Still a great film though.
If PTA was disappointed he should've done his homework. only like 3 films that haven't won best director for the dag's went on to win the oscar. personally i like blood better than country though.
Ya I noticed that too.P.T was not too happy both are great films & filmakers though.I guess we the audience are the real winners...as well as Ethan & Joel.Respect to all concerned
There was a leak about a week ago that P.T. Anderson felt his film and he should win. Looking at his face, I kind of believe it now. He thought he should have won.
