The fucks today do NOT compare to Sampras and his era (90's). Balls had more air, grass blades were shorter, players were tougher (remember when serve and volley actually had merit).
Today all guys play at the baseline - basically clay court tennis with slight variation offered by different color courts (i.e different surfaces). Yes im being sarcastic but the point is far from moot.
Its a bygone era - the ivanesavics, beckers, agassis, couriers, petes e.t.c. Everyone had a winners heart.
@telmolicious He doesn't but there is the proof of how today's players would have fared in the 90's. Bunch of Agassis, sort of top 5, maybe top 10, wining a slam here or there but never really dominating.

This happened quite often with Pete. As great as the man was just imagine how great he would of been if he was in better shape. I know this was a brutal match, but I was thinking is he 25 or 65 here? I rarely ever see any other tennis stars get sick as this guy. I hate to say it, but I feel it was an act to make it more amazing or something to fall back on if he ended up losing. The guy was great, but this type of crap got on my nerves about him.
whats wrong with Pete there??? anyway, he wins even he is obviously really sick... plays very good tennis... that is what makes the best player ever!!!
that is the best serve I have ever seen: Pete down on his knees, lost his physical strength, unable to hit it hard and he hits and ace when he needs it most.
Whatever happens, there is one thing about this guy... He was THE CHAMPION! e had an unbleievable heart and will that made him possible to overcome incredible obstacles... This match is just a sample how he could handle the drama. Federer cried over the bad moments and lost. Pete whatever was the intensity of the moment he was always prepared to be on top. He was the most amazing tennis player ever because he could always had an extra gear. Federer never had so many opponents as pete. MISS YOU!
You know you can damage your liver when your body can't handle it anymore that's why Pete puked. Dangerous proposition here considering Pete was worth millions.
In his book Pete basically admits that he refused to take his coach's advice and 'attack', so he grinded it out with a baseliner for 5 sets just to prove he could out baseline Corretja.
I remember seeing this match in 1996 when I was 11 years old. My entire family was a big tennis family. I remember watching this with my dad. We were shocked and amazed that Sampras could do this while heaving the entire time. Sampras is truly the best male tennis player, if not the best all-around tennis player, of all time. Federer is good, but he doesn't have the same passion that Sampras has. You will always be a hero in my book Sampras.
I saw it when I was sixteen, but in the spanish side. Corretja was an average tennis player, but he did a wondeful job playing against the number 1. That was far one of the most memorables things that I have never seen on a tennis court.
Never was a huge fan Sampras, but my god, he was a spectacular player. Being an Agassi fanatic all my life, I couldn't help but be amazed at the amazing talent and athletic ability this guy possesed. This was truly a high spirited performance by a legend. Also, lots of a credit to Corretja, who's always been pure class, in victory and defeat.

this demonstrates that players are better prepared now: nadal,verdasco,ferrer...spanish players can play for hours just like that, even roger tries to make the matches very short.
Once more, sampras tried everything (even drama) when he saw the opponent victory close. Check that sampras even told the chair man that alex was cheating on a sampra's ace changing the side... Corretja was better in this match, sampras could not win with the shots, so he tried to desconcentrate alex, and he got it.
I strongly disagree. Pete sufferes from a disease known as Thalassemia, a blood disease which causes anemia. He did not disclose that he had this disease while playing because he did not want other players to know that he had it, which is why no one knew that this was why he was so sick on the court. (this happened a number of times in his career). Keep in mind also that pete needed IV fluids after the match because he was ill. He was not creating drama or faking as you suggested.

ok, in case that were true, does not make any difference, it's part of the game, nadal has problems with his knees, so what? but i still see in this match, that he "stole" the match to corretja.
Thank you! I saw Pete play twice. He's amazing. One of my brother's has Thalassemia & I have pernicious anemia as well and on my mom's side we are of Greek decent. We both relate strongly to Pete's health problems.
I'm 62 & have watched Pete for years. People make such ignorant statements because they are clueless about other people reality. Have you read his book, "A Champion's Mind: Lessons From a Life in Tennis", it's very revealing & very honest! Your comment was most insightful and true~

Once more, this was unfair play from pete, he could never bear the loss, sometimes, you need to know how to lose, and with all that theatre he usually tryied to show when he saw victory was not clear enough. In this case, he made corretja lose his perfect concetration, because physically, corretja was much better.
What complete crap you are speaking here...he showed the true spirit and heart of a champion here...he despite how ill he was feeling found a way to fight through to and win! Makes his achievements during his career even more amazing in my book!
Are you kidd ing me lol. Hes in amazing shape. He had the flu when playing this match hahah thats hy he was throwing up. Im not trying to be an ass by the way because you didnt know.
It's ok cause Corretja somehow had a fair "rematch" in the 1998 Master' semifinal which was another very close meeting and went on to win the title (just like Pete here!) coming from to set to love down against Moya!
Laver and Sampras played serve and volley and had strong groundies. They are the best ever if you study the game. Practically every player today only play from the backcourt. There is hardly any difference between clay and grass.

1. Federer 2. Nadal 3. Sampras 4. Borg 5. Agassi 6. Lendl 7. Connors 8. McEnroe what do you think, who would won all 7 matches. there is only one GOD of tennis, the one that gave tennis "other"dimension, the one and only record holder FEDEX 10. 11. 12. 13. 14. 15.
I think roddick, safin, hewitt, etc. were also great players in their time. They all would have won at least 2-3 more grand slams if it wasnt for federer, you cant underestimate them like that, and say federer just had nadal and djokovic in his era.

I totally agree with you there. Pete's time was more tougher coz he has so many talented opponents unlike today which you can count on your 3 digit. Pete's all over game is non comparable. He has the best serve, volley, running 4hand, dunk overhead and he seems to float like dander all over the court. He glides magically to intercept were the balls were going next. And his stoic expression on court leaves his opponents frustrated. He can easily erased breakpoint with an ace over and over again.
My god sampras is simply the best. But considering how tough and competitive tennis has become now, roger will become the greatest of all time when he gets the 15th grand slam title.
Amazing match and amazing to watch Pete fight through all of that. You can't compare the tennis of the past to the tennis of today, but it was players like Pete that raised the bar to what it is today.
There are dozens of players throughout history (Laver, Borg, Lendl, Agassi, Federer, etc) that could have beaten Pete on that night. That's utterly irrelevant. The point is that he won when he wasn't playing or feeling his best.
