Would there be enough surface tension if you put a drop or two of dishwashing soap in the water? Try this in a pool, everything falls and you can vacuum it all up without having to skim as much.

@moron32 i think they do join up to make a raft. You can even drop fire ants from different colonies and they'll still come together to form a raft... or so that I somewhat recall from my AP Environmental Science studies this past month xD
