Generally, for thin cord as in crochet threads I double the length that I want my finished piece to be and this gives enough extra length to finish the braid. With thicker cord as in satin cord or ribbon I found that eight strands of 50" long produced a 17" braid. Generally the thicker cords produce a shorter finished length than do the thinner cords.Hope this helps!

Rosie, this was soooo very helpful for me to understand how to get a braid started!! I love your necklaces and handmade pendants, beautiful!! Could you please tell how much (length of cord) to make an 18" necklace and a 7 1/2" bracelet, I would hate to get started on a project and come up short or wasting cord. I wanted to try something other than macrame, I can't wait to get started. I'll be using 2mm hemp cord. thanks again!
@kgraley99 LYTHASTUDIOS on YouTube has many ways to finish your kumihimo braid. I cannot put the actual link in this message as it is not allowed. Also google "Finishing Kumihimo Braids with Cord End Caps " and it will be the first link. That is my favorite. Good luck with your necklace. Thanks for watching and trying this!
@rosewood24 Hi! Yes, if you use a thin yarn or string and large bobbins, I think you could make it work. It might be bulky at the beginning, but it will get easier as you go along. Good Luck!
@vidaholmes Hello! Thank you so much for this kind comment. I am making a red Kumihimo braid now using red crochet thread. I hope to use it as a Christmas necklace and bracelet set.
@graidan9 Thank You! It saved me a lot of trouble. I found the idea when I googled Kumihimo tutorials. There are a lot of great tutorials out there and I too am grateful for all of the help. Thanks!
@deniseosborne62 Hello, I am so glad you found this helpful. I really enjoy this relaxing braiding. Recently, I found some cotton string in my junk drawer and used it with my kumihimo loom to make a really nice necklace. It was surprising how string can make a nice project.

@vintagestylez Hi! I am so glad you are going to try this. I really enjoy it and have made a lot of them. Recently I tried it with narrow ribbon I found at the Dollar Store and it turned out really pretty. Thanks for the nice comment.
Hi! Thanks for the nice comment. To figure how long the finished braid will be, I usually double the length of the cords and then add 8 inches for the knot on the end and for finishing. So for an 18 inch braid I will use 18"+18"+8"=44 inches of cords. For a 15 inch braid, I would start with 38 inch cords. For a 30 inch braid I would start with 68 inch cords. This is approximate. Hope it helps.
Terrific video. My question is how do you know how long to make your cords. I want to make a lanyard with 15" of cord on each side. How long should my cords be?
@clynn1972 Hello! Yes, I did make the "Bead Collage" Pendants. I bought a similar one at a craft show ($35.00) a few years ago. I tried many ways to copy it. Mine look much fuller/thicker than the original. I start by wrapping 20 ga, craft wire around a dowel and twist 2 times. Load your beads and shape into a squarish frame. Then load more beads onto 24 ga. wire and thread/weave it all over the frame. Last I MASH the whole frame close together. It's a free form, no two alike, pendant!
@clynn1972 Hi! Yes, I will give it a try, but it will take me a while to get the still photos and video together. Thanks for the suggestion. More to come!

I wish you had told me how to finish it off - I've figured out how to do the kumihimo but I can't figure out how to end the necklace I'm creating.
