I use a pop filter made of the netting from a guitar cabinet. I use two layers taped together, rigged with a coathanger that suspends the filter about two and a half inches from the mic. It works, looks ghetto, but does its job. I also find that hot sauce or something very spicy can help open up your airways if you have a cold or muttled. I've found that clicks or other noises are tougher to get rid of.
@12ealDeal Out of 180,000 views, that was one of the coolest responses yet! You admitted that a filter may "look bad" but work well! That is all you need it to do. You also helped people other than yourself by giving a rarely known tip! Ya know, I did not know if this video would have 18 views, lol. I just wanted to help people. In fact, I was going to bed and flipped a coin as to even making this video or not. People like you make me glad I did! Thank you for watching, and I wish you well! ~Kev
Thanks. Having the wind screen, (popper stopper) also helps by getting the singer to stay a certain distance from the microphone. I wonder if it would work without the screen or stocking, just the loop to keep the singer far enough back so the engineer could work with the sound? Will research after my nap. Peace.
@HeavyRageOfficial Thanks Captain obvious, lol j/k. I have been laughing at this kind of comment for years, guess I will address it. This was my first web cam, Wal-mart, $20, lol. Got it Jan 1st 09.

@BOROCK007 Thanks! I saw your channel, very cool. It seems you have a nice tone, just need to work on your pitch. I believe there are programs that will let you see and hear a pitch on the screen, and you can sing with it, and SEE when you go off. I think this would be your best bet.
If you want to hear incredible pitch, type in my friends name, Scott Hammons. You will see him sing "Always" by Jovi, and I just recorded it on a little camera, and it will knock your socks off! ~Kevin~
thanks so much. I am just learning to use audacity. i will be recording my books as audio books for the blind. I am an author soon to be published. the laugh is pretty good.
Technically you don't need a pop filter at all if you move slightly off axis so the plosives the move past the diaphragm and you retain the vocal quality.
there are also kind of "caps" you put over the mic- think its wind protector or something like that. Does that have the same effect- can you take that instead?
a really cheap way to make your voice sound better for radio adds/vioce overs whatever is to smile while you talk. It works. Its makes you sound happy. No Joke man. I'm a damn radio dj so I should know.
@LivvyTxxx I would suggest musuciansfriend(dot)com

i know this might be late unclearless but i made my pop filter with an embroidery hoop six inch and some woments panty hose or JUST BUY ON from the guitar center whatever you want! Saved you 3 minutes of your life now... NO MILLION dollar
@ladyslovethisman Not late at all :-). I don't respond as often because it goes to the top of the list, and I try to answer the most asked questions so the trolls don't keep asking why there is noise on a vid about plosives. I know there is hum, from an old amp, computer fan, etc... but this was about stopping "Pops" or "Plosives" (same thing). I will make a vid about noise reduction in the future. 20 yrs ago bro, we did not think of the embroidery hoop, wish we had! Thanks 4 watching, ~Kev~
@MrJoelguitar I have done that myself! You can really get some decent recordings that way. For about 50-70% of demos, this will do OK, considering it is a demo. The sock will still kill a lot of the high crisp range. Not enough to mess up a demo, but when u want all the mic can give, you should consider a pop filter. If I were wrong, why would every band you have ever heard (On the radio) use a pop filter instead of a sock? It is just that little something "Extra". TY 4 watching!
best recording tip? stop your fan, move your computer away from your mic, and make sure you don't have a hum.. all three you seem to have in this recording. Beside that, very good explanation of a pop filter.
it aint help da problem im actually tryna fix wit my mic, but this dude is fuccin hillarious! lmao.... my problem is more with gettin enuff volume when i record, and also when i play it bacc 4 some reason the vocals are just comin in one earphone like itz panned all the way to the left of sumthin.
Your video was awesome lol your a real fucking Goofball though but that's good these days it adds flavor to life's madness. On the matter of smoking though, I've done voice effects for hundreds of different things and my voice was always raspy sounding from smoking but it wasn't the good raspy it sounded like shit. I started vaporizing with electric cigarettes and my throat cleared up and I feel amazing after smoking 15 years. Vaping is healthy and feels better than cigarettes so look into it.
Hey dude, you sound like you know what you are talking about and seem some what professional. Would be nice if you spent some extra coins on an HD video or at least better quality than what you are using. Your video stutters (poor quality).
Dued you are so accurate. I actually discovered that techqiue back in 2003 it really does help a lot because i could never figure out why i was getting those pop sounds until someone explained it to me. It really helps guys try and i'll do a video soon on it a soon as i have my new cam!!
oooohhh now i know what is that damn circle thing in front of that mic made out of grandmas panty hose bwaahahaha!!! i thought that was a spit preventer. oohh i see its a pop preventer. good tip dude. but wat about that headphone on your head , where is it connected?? thanks
@omarbon23 A pop filer (I like to call a "Popper-stopper" because it rhymes, lol) simply defuses something called "Plosives". A plosive is something like a small explosive blast of air. Say "Pa" up to your hand, then "Wa" and you will see what I mean. The filter simply scatters some of the force of the "Plosive" in many directions away from you mic diaphragm, while retaining most wanted frequencies. A CRUCIAL reason for one is to keep HUMIDITY (Water vapor) off the diaphragm, which harms a mic!
@stephaz1971 They do for the most part, but there are reasons why it is not enough. Please read the last, and next few comments. You gave me an idea that might make me rich, lol, if it does, I will give you a percentage! Thank you very much for the compliment, and thank you for watching! ~Kev~
@stephaz1971 They all do but the internal windscreens have to be thin in order to allow good sound quality. Most professional mic modifications include removing the internal windscreen.
Using a coat-hanger wrapped with pantyhose works (in my experiences) better than any of my professional popper-stoppers.
@giraffegira Hello, I am using a SHURE SM-58 in this video. (Around $100). You said "i thought your microphone's spherical filter will eliminate most of the "pop" sound?". Well, it does, to some extent. But it also has to do with distance from your mouth, and the volume gain. This can get very confusing, but once you learn it, you will see how simple a few factors are in changing what is happening. For instance, a SHURE SM-57 is the EXACT same mic, without the bulbous wind screen. ~Kev~
@unclearless SM58 and SM57 are similar but not the same. Their frequency response patterns differ slightly, and more importantly they sound subtly different in application
I heard some hiss and I have a lot of that when I do voice over for my projects. Whenever I use noise reduction, it makes everything metallic. Help! Amazing tutorial though. Subscribed and rated!
The stanton metal ones are great too … also try not singing directly into the mic. Point the mic at a slight angle towards the side of your lip … and stay about 12" from the mic. YouTube sounds like hell in general so it's hard to tell. We have a great vid on how to get great results on almost almost any mic .. acoustics!
@tanukitejon Thank you very much! The best thanks I could receive is if you were to SUBSCRIBE, rate, and comment, like you did. And more importantly, share any information you may get from me with others, as I plan on making a LOT more vids very soon! You are too kind, again, thank you. Cheers! ~Kev
LOL, great ears! That is the hum of an old Fender guitar amp with a polarity problem. Though this video was impromptu, and about Plosives, in retrospect, I should have turned it off! Thanks for watching, and for a great comment!
This is a good explanation about why pop filters are useful, but its better to buy a real pop filter. Actual pop filters use two layers and a gap between the layers to disperse air from 'plosives' better without absorbing too much of the sound. Wrapping pantyhouse around a coat hanger is a good stop-gap measure but its better to just buy a real pop filter if you can afford to do so.
@ 1:07 haqhaha funny as hell man. Nice I might make the coat hanger panty hose thing, but they might think I'm a damn drag Queen when I go to but the products to make this. >:-D lol
LOL! TY, you cracked me up as well! Girls/women like guys with balls...period. They can smell a man without confidence 3 countries away. The worst they would think when you buy panty hose is that you have a girl and you love her. Read that again.
If you don't want people to think you are a "Drag queen" while buying panty hose...don't wear your skirt. ;-) Mua-HAHAHAHAHAHA!! Thanks for watching. ~Kev~ (OMG...I crack me up!) Fun comment, ty!
lol am only 14 but dangg i knew all this already but some tips helped (: thanks for vid am Subn you But the video its uhmm Bad but the tips were good for people who dont know this (: lol if you can be nice can you go to my channel look in comments and go to my music page !! _Drama-
Good question, maybe the first to ask after 56,000 views. The answer is NO, you do not have to use panty hose! It would be best to use, but if you cannot get a pair from Wal-mart for 33 cents, then you could use another fabric. If you can stretch a cotton sock (Or silk) to the point to where is is not quite tearing, it would still help as a pop filter. Different fabrics will alter the sound of the mic, thin with holes is best, too thick a fabric and you will muffle your mic. ~Kev
@unclearless You are good professional Musician Etc. well i want you as our music teacher. lol You are a sound expert but you are a fail "Video" maker ;)
LMAO!! Your right! This video was made on a 10 year old computer, and a cheap webcam!! LOL. I will make you a deal...you sub to my channel, and I promise you the next video will be a little better quality than this! ;-)
So you telling me that i can record music with " Audacity? and thanks man you videos is mad cool... i gonna try to get the program to record my songs.
@TheCarlana We are all very lucky now. You can get CD quality from a free program like 'Audacity', or pay a lot for 'Pro-tools'. A lot of us still love the "Warmth" of old 2" tape, but it's hard to work with. REMEMBER THIS: with almost ANY program available today, you can make a KILLER recording! However, the ART of recording seems to have been lost because everyone wants to brag about WHAT they are recording with! A producer like Mutt Lang can make a great recording with almost anything. Art!!!
@mcelusive LOL, read through the hundreds of comments, and see what I think about that. You are nice, so I will say this...we called it a "Popper stopper" over twenty years ago, on the street. Just like calling a nice car a "Nice ride". Big company's could not really charge as much if they called it "Professional-grade panty hose in a circle" so they opted for "Pop filter". Ours rhymed, and it is the same thing! The one in this vid is "Pro" but that is only because I had too much money 1 day!
@VideoGameLogic The best way to help that is to sing/talk at an angle across the mic. Test the mic yourself, see what works best for you. I agree, I wish this would fix everything! ;-) Thanks for watching, ~Kev~ (Not to be a jerk, but it would also be nice if people knew there are three ways to write the word "To" and reasons for all. The number is spelled 'TWO' . To say 'Also' you may say, "I did it TOO." Then, if I were to say "I did not know what TO do". But hey, I suck at spelling too. ;-))
U´re fun! THANX for the lesson!

A CRUCIAL reason for one is to keep HUMIDITY (Water vapor) off the diaphragm, which harms a mic!

It's a wonder, mics don't have those pop shields ready built in...
...good vid btw great voice!
stephaz1971 9 months ago 4
@stephaz1971 They do for the most part, but there are reasons why it is not enough. Please read the last, and next few comments. You gave me an idea that might make me rich, lol, if it does, I will give you a percentage! Thank you very much for the compliment, and thank you for watching! ~Kev~

@stephaz1971 They all do but the internal windscreens have to be thin in order to allow good sound quality. Most professional mic modifications include removing the internal windscreen.
Using a coat-hanger wrapped with pantyhose works (in my experiences) better than any of my professional popper-stoppers.

hi there, what's the microphone you're using in this video?
i thought your microphone's spherical filter will eliminate most of the "pop" sound?
giraffegira 9 months ago
@giraffegira Hello, I am using a SHURE SM-58 in this video. (Around $100). You said "i thought your microphone's spherical filter will eliminate most of the "pop" sound?". Well, it does, to some extent. But it also has to do with distance from your mouth, and the volume gain. This can get very confusing, but once you learn it, you will see how simple a few factors are in changing what is happening. For instance, a SHURE SM-57 is the EXACT same mic, without the bulbous wind screen. ~Kev~

@unclearless thank you so much!
giraffegira 9 months ago
@unclearless SM58 and SM57 are similar but not the same. Their frequency response patterns differ slightly, and more importantly they sound subtly different in application

I heard some hiss and I have a lot of that when I do voice over for my projects. Whenever I use noise reduction, it makes everything metallic. Help! Amazing tutorial though. Subscribed and rated!
wency777 10 months ago
The stanton metal ones are great too … also try not singing directly into the mic. Point the mic at a slight angle towards the side of your lip … and stay about 12" from the mic. YouTube sounds like hell in general so it's hard to tell. We have a great vid on how to get great results on almost almost any mic .. acoustics!

Wrapping pantyhouse around a coat hanger is a good stop-gap measure but its better to just buy a real pop filter if you can afford to do so.
zeroangelmk1 1 year ago
@ 1:07 haqhaha funny as hell man. Nice I might make the coat hanger panty hose thing, but they might think I'm a damn drag Queen when I go to but the products to make this. >:-D lol
RikJamezBich 1 year ago

Panty hose stretched and secured into an embroidery hoop is totally the easiest way to do this. You can select different sizes, etc.

do i have to use panty hoes
rockstar0337 1 year ago 2
@rockstar0337
~Kev

So you telling me that i can record music with " Audacity? and thanks man you videos is mad cool... i gonna try to get the program to record my songs.
TheCarlana 1 year ago
but what program do you use to record a songs??
TheCarlana 1 year ago
@TheCarlana We are all very lucky now. You can get CD quality from a free program like 'Audacity', or pay a lot for 'Pro-tools'. A lot of us still love the "Warmth" of old 2" tape, but it's hard to work with. REMEMBER THIS: with almost ANY program available today, you can make a KILLER recording! However, the ART of recording seems to have been lost because everyone wants to brag about WHAT they are recording with! A producer like Mutt Lang can make a great recording with almost anything. Art!!!

popper stopper? lol you mean a pop filter =]
mcelusive 1 year ago
@mcelusive LOL, read through the hundreds of comments, and see what I think about that. You are nice, so I will say this...we called it a "Popper stopper" over twenty years ago, on the street. Just like calling a nice car a "Nice ride". Big company's could not really charge as much if they called it "Professional-grade panty hose in a circle" so they opted for "Pop filter". Ours rhymed, and it is the same thing! The one in this vid is "Pro" but that is only because I had too much money 1 day!

VideoGameLogic 1 year ago 14
@VideoGameLogic The best way to help that is to sing/talk at an angle across the mic. Test the mic yourself, see what works best for you. I agree, I wish this would fix everything! ;-) Thanks for watching, ~Kev~ (Not to be a jerk, but it would also be nice if people knew there are three ways to write the word "To" and reasons for all. The number is spelled 'TWO' . To say 'Also' you may say, "I did it TOO." Then, if I were to say "I did not know what TO do". But hey, I suck at spelling too. ;-))
