Falling on your back is about the dumbest thing you could do. It might work, but if it doesn't you're completely screwed. And how long do you think it's going to take for you to fall on your back and get your gun aimed? By then the knife wielder will be on top of you.

Best advice if you have a gun vs a knife is shoot them as quickly as possible and run like hell.

This individual clearly had a mental problem, and simply shooting him as many here advocate, before he has directly threatened any officer, would be unlawful in most civilised countries. Taser/CS/Pepper spray would have been the answer here, but were not available. A difficult call for the officers, who had no stab jackets. You are a martial arts enthusiast, I speak as someone with 36 years Police experience, including 6 in Africa dealing with such situations..
