  • [CAUGHT] I have a sneaking suspicion Allison Winter and Victoria Winter, that him and my sisters are behind all of this chaos. Just today I was asked to "wash the dishes," and "pay the rent" crazy talk is this in the real world, but in there it's a subtle way of saying please clean us off and pay fore we don't want to.

  • He must have an external hard drive that plays the guitar while he sings, I can't play anything but I know his talent blows my mind!

  • heard him for the first time today. i already know hes amazing <3

  • the time signature can be a variety of things, it just makes it easier reading in certain time signatures... like 6/4. dave is a genius though, one of the toughest rhythm guitar lines too sing along with I have ever heard. doesn't ever start with the beginning of the rhythm lines which makes it just mind boggling.

  • This is my favorite version of the song.

  • I can kinda half play this song, but singing to it and keeping this amazing rhythm is physically impossible

  • @ThOrnton42421 i hear you dude. i can play the entire song and sing to it but when i record myself, my voice sounds like crap and i mess up the rythem a lot! dave is a master

  • Beautiful Mind.....Beautiful Soul!

  • Wow this version always seems to move me to tears. Such an honest and EPIC performance. Dave is a living legend.

  • dave's approach to the guitar is pretty damn sweet!

  • Before these crowded streets was EASILY my favourite dmb album. Every song was just amazing..

  • to sing and play like that hes a super dupper star

  • incredible!!

  • Favorite anything of Dave right there this. Any venue. This is Dave Matthews at his best, impecable.

We all need someone to hold up our head when our head wont hold on. I do not care what anyone says humans are curious creatures and we all need someone to care for us.

  • This is like Dave Mathews covers Tool. Incredible

  • he is the man f ing good stuff

  • No matter how hard I try I can't get it to sound the same as him when I play. I'm not worthy

  • Amazing. But it cuts out the end!

  • MrCopperhead, the seven dislikes have tin ears. Dave was and is the master. Like me, I bet all of you listened to the end even though the video was messed up... thanks for posting!

  • OMGGGG

  • @genericaccount1967 totally agree. unreal. and genius to be able to play that so offbeat and sing at the same time.

  • lest i be stoned, i will say say that the fucked up vid made my night.

and at 4:35 theres a grandfatherly black man playing with dave on the right. it might be god.

  • This vid got mad messed up. I saw this when it aired, and while I am by no means a DM fan, this song--this version--is a masterpiece. But what happened to the picture?

  • 2:35 feels like a bad acid trip

  • 7 people should be hit by a stone.

  • anyone else get the video fucking up at 2:35 till the end?

  • @mouldyteabag yeah

  • A guitar and a voice... that's all he needs.

  • I love Dave's crazy eyebrows. He cracks me up.

  • best artist to ever live

  • his left hand has a mind of its own, his right hand has a mind of its own. Wow.

  • my god he is beyond wonderful!!

  • holly crap!! how can he play and sing that stuff? most guitar/singers kinda sing what they are playing or play what they are singing hehe

but not dave! youre the man dave!

  • I'm sorry but for anyone to say that all this takes is practice and that playing this song is "quite easy" is missing the point. You can teach a monkey to paint but it doesn't make it art. It's not enough to practice until you can regurgitate what someone else has already done, then call it simple. It's the complexity, inflection and butt crazy originality that makes this a masterpiece.

  • @Maccklin - Well said!

  • absolutely right, right on the money

  • Boa tarde ...."Stone"

  • their best song

  • This is amazing !!! I would love if anyone here would check out my cover of Grey Street on my page... leave a comment and let me know what you think ! Thanks so much guys !!

  • is the video and sound not synced for anyone else? its annoying as hell, specially since this is such a beautiful performance.

  • the little outro bit is way UB40 :O slightly tweaked. Perhaps one of his influences?

  • @jeeeegan it was an elvis presley song long before ub40 covered it.

  • One of my most fave dave songs. I love the chorus lines, "I was just wondering if you'd come along....." and especially the outro that he usually does with the live versions.

  • He looks like Tom hanks

  • i think alot of experienced guitarists can play this song. but then ask them to sing and play like dave, its a whole new game now.

  • very true my man, a lot of people don't know how skilled you have to be to play and sing, and forget about this song!!! the coordination is insane.

Dave is in a whole new level.

  • @titintallica

    i think you're a little exegerating here..

it's just a matter of practice..

if you figured out the pattern once it's actually quite easy..of course there are easier songs to play but it's not that hard to play and sing this one..

at least it's going straight forward..

  • @bastifmbh Put your money where your mouth is and post yourself playing this and then I will believe you:^O thath a pretty strong comment on a musical prodogy.

  • @MrNbittle i think you're not quite gettin me right..

it's one the most beautiful songs i ever heard..i really got no idea how anyone could ever come up with this. the composition i really amazing..but it's still not hard to play..especially not for a dave matthews song.

  • @MrNbittle my boyfriend can play it perfectly...

you just have to know how to read any time signature that isn't 4/4

    which non-theorists have issues with.

    bastifmbh is right.

  • @MganHbeck 3/3, right?

  • @headstock48 3/4 if you're asking about the time signature

  • @SkiDMB311 Yes, I was asking about the time signature. Even though my guitar teacher just explained time signatures to me, I still only know what the upper number means. Duh. Thanks for the clarification!

  • @headstock48 its still 4/4

  • @capsfan0088

    ...It's 6/8 idiot...

  • @SkiDMB311 Well actually 6/8, but close enough

  • @jguth66 Actually tis 3/4 but I won't get into an argument of music theory and basic math with you :p

  • @Progressionification

...6/8, not 3/4, this song is too fast to be using 3/4.

  • @headstock48

    3/3 isn't a time.

the bottom number is equivalent to a note value. and usually there aren't 3 dotted quarter notes per measure

  • @MganHbeck Yes. See my above comment. I like the fact that a lot of DMB and DM songs are done in this time. It's different and interesting.

  • @bastifmbh I guess everyone knows how great you are now.

  • thank you dave

  • This performance when I first saw it on "The Charlie Rose Show" inspired me to learn how to play guitar. Thank you, for posting. Five Stars!

  • This version is 10,000 times better than the studio version. Loved it since the first time I heard it.

  • @mumblesftw A million times better. This guy is unbelievable.

  • @mumblesftw you'll love the version i've got of song that jane likes if you like this!

  • FAB, Dave. You are amazingly gifted & it's a pleasure to listen to your wisdom & beauty.

  • but yes dave matthews is harder to play then john, but i have seen them both do what they can do and i think john is skill better but dave has way more soul.

  • I'm sure john is better Speed wise, but Dave Matthews is way better at creating music and is amazing at playing anyways so it doesn't matter. John Mayer is awesome too no disrespect i love them both.

  • listen john mayer is a very talented artist, and so is dave. but the way dave plays his chords and sings while playing is insainly difficult. ive been playing guitar since i was 6 and im 19 now and i can only play & sing gravedigger anywhere near daves ability.

  • stop saying the audio is off of the visual, half the videos on youtube are one second off

  • i love hes sound all the way from kurdistan thanks

  • this guy is easily the greatest =)

  • @DmB4LiFe420eL you mean the greatest easily :o)

  • HEY! This happened 10 years ago today!

    9.10.99 :D

  • just amazing dave dave dave sa you guys in lisbonne and paris and amsterdam this summer, as the such good show, carter gave me his drum sticks and dave i got ur plectrum, thank U so muchhhhh will B fan for as long as you keep making awesome album .... wicked

  • you are aware that "dave" will never actually read this....

  • so sweet. It's in 6/8. Fast.

  • Its 6/8 and 4/4 he switches back and forth

  • its all 6/8

  • count it out. its all 6/8

  • yeah the videos out of sync, and i love the bit of elvis at the end

  • 2 days ago in lucca, italy. WOW WOW WOW!! 3,5 ore, incredibile meraviglioso!! grazie dave!!

  • you're so right.... i was there, it was unbelievable!

  • 5 stars are not enough...

  • i live near raleigh, nc and i know that dave does a lot of shows there. i actually couldnt go to the one in raleigh this year b/c i had to study for an exam. can anyone tell me if dave is going to have more shows in raleigh? i want to see them in concert so bad

  • So far, the band hasn't announced any more tour dates in North Carolina. However, they'll be in Virginia Beach on August 7, so you can definitely still get a show in if you feel like taking a short road trip.

  • Dude screw all the Dave/John Mayer comparisons. John Mayer is great, Dave Matthews is great, they're all fucking great!

You're wasting time arguing when you could be getting smarter or laid or something productive. But everyone knows that John Mayer is pretty egotistical and Dave isn't. That's why Dave wins. Stop arguing, it's a matter of opinion. Everyone has a right to be wrong.

  • HA!...HA! and HA!

  • you cant compare the two of them man, dave plays rhythm and john plays lead. no need to compare, music is music.

  • i dont know whats wrong with saying that john is better at guitar and dave is better at writing.

    it's true.

  • actually, unless you play guitar, you don't know what you're talking about. I play both and if you asks any guitarists they tell you dave is much harder to play than john. go pick up a guitar u! okay u!

  • i've been playing guitar for 5 years, and while this particular song is impressive, most of what dave plays in his songs is just chords, where as most of johns songs are a bit more complicated on guitar (excluding his more mainstream songs) and he is better at soloing.

But if you feel otherwise thats fine, i was just saying.

  • i assume were talking about john mayer here, but john is a very good blues guitar player, while dave is an acoustic rhythm guitar player...but technically john plays much more difficult music than dave...fact

  • if you add soloing, then yeah, john is better at that. Dave doesn't solo and john does some crazy stuff too, but if you look at songs like tripping billies or captain, they are pretty difficult to play. its hard to see that when he plays with the band, but when he plays with tim, its more visible how he dominates that guitar. Nonetheless both are great musicians. sorry to come off rude, keep rocking

  • omg who the fuck thought this song was by ol bobby dylan, u obviously dont know shit about dave

  • dave says he's not a master of the guitar.. but damnn he must be a master of singing while playing.. that opening riff looks mad hard while singing

  • The video doesnt match up with the audio

  • Labels Labels Labels. It's about the music people. GREAT MUSIC!

  • do you mean that this was not written by dmb? I researched and all i can find is that it is by dave, can you post the link to the video you are refering to?

  • The Stone is not a Dylan song, dude

  • of course is not!!! what the fuck is this guy talking about!!!... nothing is great but!!!... clean your soul, man!!!... and do some stuff too...fuck off the great names of music!!!... and the comparitions... music is create to disapear no one can cach it....

  • i really don't understand why people group John Mayer and Dave Matthews Band together. Their style isn't even the same! John Mayer is pop/rock whereas Dave Matthews is rock. Vocally they're not alike. Dave has a stronger smokier voice than John Mayer. Don't get me wrong, I love both groups (I still think that Dave Matthews Band is the greatest band of all time (: ) but i really don't think the two can be compared.

  • why do people even compare him with anyone for that matter? it is no competition, every artist has their own space and public, dave will be my ultimate favorite for all time but i refuse to close my eyes and not see talent elsewhere, and i agree, they are nothing alike, they only share talent for playing guitar, dave just takes me to more deep darker places, i can relate to him more, that's it, and he writes wonderful love songs, i just love him.

  • I agree with you 1000%!

  • Dave could possibly be one of the greatest rhythm guitarists ever..

Dave is way better then John Mayer, although Mayer is good, he just isn't as good as Dave.

  • Thankk god the same era that gave us the Spice Girls and Backstreet Boys also gave us Dave Matthews. Best of his generation!

  • dave matthews and john mayer are the only truely godly musicians from our generation. ie-have productivly contributed to music

  • Let's keep Dave in his own. John Mayer is a Dave Matthews impersonator. Granted he is stretching out on his own, but he should never be put in the same sentence as Dave.

  • i gotta disagree, they play together on stage sometimes, they are both known for different aspects in music, and are both professionals at what they do. and they happen to be my two favorite artists

  • How do you put John Mayer in the same catergory as Dave? Dave is LIGHT years ahead of John.

  • As a fan of both and a guitarist

I must say that they both john mayer & dave are real good musciians

dave is more creative as ive found while learning their music

though john mayer is good, he is highly a student of hendrix (then again who isnt?)

but he has alot of licks taken from jimi

  • I'm presuming you've noted John Frusciante in a higher class of his own.....

Love every aspect Dave's work though so don't take that as a negative comment...

  • fa impazzire... quanto e bella.....!!!!! davematthews on tour in europe... im so happy..

  • This is the first DMB song that I ever fell in love with, but I had never heard it done acoustic before. It's awesome no matter how it's performed, don't you agree? I just can't get enough of this man!

  • best song ever!

  • there's a better version... it has like NO views but the video quality is better and the audio and video are in sync

  • pity the audio and video are not in sync?

  • was that a question? did it need a question mark?

  • do you have the rest of these? He's so much better solo.

  • smooth as the other side of the pillow

  • one of the best displays of his voice...wow...rock on dave

  • one of my favorite songs he wrote this song after his sister was murdered. there's so much emotion in this song. cant wait to see him in concert this summer!!

  • dave. is. god.

  • rad

  • Beautiful ending

  • one of my favorite songs for sure, i love watching his fingers move so fast and he plays it like its nothing, go DAVE!

  • Just love this Man!!

  • You mind if I just like his music? :-)

  • LOL...that is ALSO what I meant!! LOL

    Isn't his work EXCELLENT?? :D

  • hehe :p

  • solid

  • I stayed up reeeeeeally late to watch and record this episode of charlie rose when it first aired.....my goodness. I'm so glad I woke up the next morning to find the stone was performed 4 hours later. The interview was murder but the performance stellar! There are like 2 seconds at the end missing from this copy that is amazing. Orizabo do you think you can repost this copy?

  • perfection

  • perfect dynamic song, one of his best

  • every time i hear this song...its amazes me like when i had heard it the first time

  • He is absolutely amazing. I love him and Tim Reynolds at Radio City Music Hall. Awesome!

  • I love this man.

  • absolutely amazing version, this song is incredible

  • He has everything. Talent, voice, image. And don't forget his unique facial expressions... :)

  • goddamn. This is such an amazing song. Dave Matthews = perfection

  • True genius

  • Why do I feel as if I'm in too deep?

  • The best song ever.

  • I LOVE THIS SONG

  • RIP LEROI MOORE :(

  • when was this played?

  • I think it was from an old visit with Charlie Rose several years ago.

  • yep, you are right.

  • MY FAVORITE SONG EVERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

I love you Dave, love DMB <3 YAY

    <3333333333333333333

  • UGGGGGHHH, SOOOOOO good! Absolutely amazing.

  • this is such good guitar work, the riffs are untouchable, and the song is hauntingly perfect

  • i simply don't understand how someone can watch this and NOT be a fan.

  • you cant compare musicians, they are all unique and awesome in their own way.

  • This Song and daves guitar work is just unreal.. AMAZING

  • comparing dave to john is not fair, as they are from completely different backrounds. But as long as you're at it..........compare the partridge family to led zepplin.

  • If you ever watched the show you would know that they are musicians. John plays for the bitches and Dave plays for the masses.

  • amen

  • What a great performance this is.....Amazing execution as always from Dave.I remember watching this love & being in total awe-

  • god damn grow the fuck up and watch the video

  • This is a perfect example of how underrated Dave Matthews is as a guitarist / song writer. The melody and chord changes are great. This is one of his best!

  • WOW stop fighting over it.......Just realize how awesome DM's is.....Mellow out and relax.....

  • well theres a song called shotgun by dave. except he says"shotgun, theres a barrel for each of us baaaaaaaaaaaaabbbbbbbbbbyyyyyyyyyy. yall should watch it. its amazing

  • Just a quick comment: There is a reason he's famous and you are not. He spends his time working, writing, etc. You all spend your time arguing online about people who actually take action. But, keep it up, it's entertaining for people like myself.

  • Surely there is excess embellisment and zeal for Dave Matthews that is not necessarily warranted. But Dave Matthew's musicianship and lyricism in this video is compelling and eerie. This video is a treasure to come across!

  • that's the african in him...

  • I just exploded. I blame Dave for such explosions.
