Indonesia cant easily give independence to west papua because most of the gold mining and and oil drilliing contributes highly to the national income of indonesia. it would be good if more people in the US knew that it were the Kennedy's in person who sold the US democratic values for economic gain in West Papua during the 1960's, making Papuan, Dutch and African (Brazzaville group) voices mute and supporting the Indonesian military takeover, giving it a legal face, just because there were lands to exploit that were rich in ores.
Indonesia later made the problem hard to resolve by transmigration policy (same as in the Moluccas, on Timor, Kalimantan, etc.)

As an Indonesian, I would like to say my deepest sorry for all the mistakes that the old government (the dictator) did to Papuans for a long time. However, this should be a lesson to all of us as we proceed to a better future with reformation and democracy. I really hope Papuans will receive better treatment in the future, don't let westerners provoke you because in the end they will control your land for their own pockets.

It is a pity that international support for the plight of the Papuans is hardly given. Indonesia should open the province for investigation by international human rights agencies and withdraw all of its troops from the area. Papuans should be given the right to selfdeterimination, just like the Papuans of PNG.
