NY has become the nanny state full of pampered crybabies. Soon you wont be able to take a decent shit in your own apartment because the smell offends the neighbors. It's ridiculous!!! I guarantee you that if a building became a smokers only building, people would cry foul and sue that the practice of only allowing smokers to move in is discriminatory. Yet, smokers are consistently being discriminated against, in extremely invasive ways as this apt. ban suggests, and yet it is justified.
bullshit! If someone pays for an apartment and they own it, they can do anything they want behind closed doors if its legal. Cigarettes are legal substances that people have been dealing with since their invention and someone telling me not to smoke in my own apartment is the equivalent of me telling someone not to cook curry in theirs. Some will argue that its for health reasons, but then you have specific health needs and need to look for a non smoking building.
This smoking ban in bars was one of the best accomplishments of Mayor Bloomberg! Think of how many peoples lives he's helped save and prevented people from getting heart and lung disease from second hand smoke! Especially the food and beverage personnel who suffer the effects most.
They are so full of S**t... if you have ever talked to a neighbor in NYC about a dog or smoke or whatever, they roll there eyes and dig in (or worse) ...just like Whoopi is doing. These are the kind of "arguments" we used to have about the workplace and now it is just accepted. It will be the same way with apartment buildings in the near future. Smoking is also a fire hazard.

Yes, you can do what you want in your privacy. BUT when that privacy hurts other people, it is that smokers fault. No, it is not the persons fault when a smoker is smoking smoke into vents to people.
