I found a fix for this issue, i know this video is 2 years old but i'll post this for anyone else who needs this
Push the button in the front with the light on it and blow on the 2 holes that latch on to the lid when you close the laptop, this will clear any debris you have in there preventing the laptop from closing
Great comment! This was very helpful... It worked well on my laptop. I had the same issue and was devastated about it... thought I have to drop it off the Apple Tech support and not able to do my work on the laptop... well, I followed the directions give by "therabeez" and after almost passing out... the debris inside the latch disapeared and my latch closes perfectly! THANK YOU.
Worked for me!! I also took some canned air sprayed it threw the two holes. Make sure you hold your laptop on its side such that it is vertical. This allows you to use the canned air in the two holes without angling the canned air down. Angling the canned air downwards will get you a frozen laptop which is probably not too great for your laptop.
My battery died after a year, my screen got this weird stain that impossible to get rid off and the laptop often overheated and making weird noises. I think Apple doesn't spend enough time inspecting the quality of their products. They just try to get it out into the market for some doughs. This will be my first and last apple laptop.
Depress and hold the latch button. Spray a small amount of a product called Deoxit® (or other fine electrical contact cleaner that leaves little or no residue) into the slots. Press the latch button a few times. I think it's mainly a sticking rather than spring issue. I read somewhere that one Apple® store fix was to replace the bottom of the computer, a $300 to $500 repair. Deoxit® fixed mine in approximately 10 seconds and a can of regular Deoxit® cost about $18. It's invaluable.
its not about the quality of the laptop ( even though macbooks & pros are great) its the O/S that they run that makes them great. Yeah, you could run osx86 but there are a lot fo compatibility issues. P.S. if I was gonna replace my mac, ity would be with a falcon NW, not dell lol, dell, your a funny guy.
oh and btw... dust and things that go inside my ass, at least mine already came from store like this... I love apple, mac os x rulez...but I'm sure that my next computer won't b a mac, apple used to b better in the past, while they weren't a big corporation like today, now that they want to play hard in the market, lots of shittier things are about to come :/
my mbp closes but I can notice that the left latch doesn't close too well, it's something about the hook that holds it that's not too fine... I'd send it to b fixed but... the apple assistance here in italy sux badly and I don't want to b without my mbp for more then a month just for a such problem :/
ya i'd go crazy too. I agree with you. I mean paying for a computer for good money....and the stupid lid doesn't click shut and stay shut that's bullshit. :(
Here was the post that gave me the idea of trying the paperclip:
Mine was caused because the button was pushed in and stuck. It was hard for me to tell at first but when I took it in they noticed that and I then took it home, grabbed a paper clip and pulled it out.
So, I took a medium sized paper clip, bent it so that I could stick it in the hold to the right of the latch, go in behind the latch, and pop it out. The latch gets wedged behind the case and needs some help to get out.
The paper clip worked! Thanks for the video and the comment about fixing it with the paper clip. My MBP didn't want to go back to Apple, and 2 minutes here at home fixed it.

the same thing has happened to my macbook pro. i took it into the apple store and they said that it simply wore out and could not be fixed under warranty. it is really crummy. wondering if you had any suggestions for me. i tried using a paper clip. didn't work at pulling the latch out. did you work from inside or outside to pull the button out?
I feel like the latch on my MBP is on the fritz, too. It shuts fine, but sometimes it won't open immediately. I wonder if there's a good solution. Does it need some oil in there?
Yeah, I took it to the Genius Bar and the guy sent it in for repair. I got it back and it works great. I still hope, though, the next Macbook Pro has a magnetic latch like it's little brother.

i bought a dell laptop a few years ago and the entire screen section became detached from the keyboard section.
my mac now has the problem in this video and ill say that this problem is way less severe than the dell problem.
not to mention you pay for the OS when you buy a mac. Im sure youll make up for all that cost when you buy the anti virus needed for a pc

Another form over function flaw, apple shouldve went with the more secure, 2 locks on each side format.
