@corvanjer There is no proof to show us these guys are world class. In his heyday Gracie took on all comers from all disciplines, including arrogant karate guys who thought they could beat him. He'd finish them in minutes. The MMA world favors Brazilian Jiu Jitsu over karate
@blindthief Some karate guys, eh? If the other guy is the best of his class, then the karate guys should be best from theirs. So, the best ones from Kykushin? Would kick your ass.
@pastropmal Yeah, and I can put bullets in their head. And your point is? This isn't about me. It's about Gracie and BJJ vs. Karate. I respect all forms of martial arts but these guys haven't proven to be world class. I can't give them credit just because they show us videos of karate guys practicing their dance routines at the beach and breaking boards. That doesn't say much. I will say though, I have a lot of respect for MMA fighter Lyoto Machida whose base style is karate.
@blindthief What makes it a fact that true martial artist would be found only in cage? And maybe you are only watching some videos of Kyokushin, rather than trying yourself. That doesn't mean, nobody else knows what it's all about. Hardly a no-karate practitioner would recognize if that "dance routine" - kata - is done very well.
@pastropmal As of right now MMA is the gold standard when it comes to determining the best of the best. The fighters are proving their point to the world. Whether that goes against the philosophy of self defense does not matter. Again, it's about validating one's true skills. Now let me ask you this - what exactly makes you a true believer in guys who don't wish to compete commercially? That's like buying a product in the black market. Karate is decent but it's not every effective in MMA
@blindthief The best of the best at what? If you abandon the self-defence side, after all isn't that what this is all for originally? One's true skills at what? There is limits in MMA too. Since there's those certain things that make bigger chances to win or lose. For me, the kind of situation where one is fighting for his life is the no limits competition. However even that is not enough to make it the right one or "the true one". there's always something that makes the "rules" incomplete.
@pastropmal I know your message is two weeks old but I didn't get a notification for it so I was unaware of it until now. In response , I will admit there is always going to be tradeoffs. Anything can happen in a fight where even someone like Anderson Silva could be beaten by someone who's untrained. But the question is..how likely is this: a Karate practitioner beating someone who is well trained in Jiu Jitsu? I'm highly confident a young Royce Gracie would beat any of these guys in the video.
@blindthief I know karate isn't very effective in MMA. But MMA isn't very effective in karate either.I'm just not a true believer in guys in MMA. I've got nothing against it though.
@pastropmal Sorry, but in a real fight, I'd pick the Jiu Jitsu practitioner to dominate a Karate guy pretty easily. I could be wrong. But I highly doubt it. Karate and Jiu Jitsu derived from the same country: Japan. So the Japanese should be proud.
@blindthief You don't seem to see any difference between separate karate styles. Some of them are a lot like jiu jitsu. They all got throws, locks and such, some ground fighting too.
@NeverSoHonest No need to split hairs. Karate is karate. And JJ is just that. The conversation was about pure Karate vs. pure Jiu Jitsu. All the in-betweens are irrelevant at this point. I go by the MMA standard. I may sound naive to you people who know every single martial art that exist in this world. But I am extremely confident the best fighters in the world fight in the big organizations like the UFC and Strikeforce. Other guys who claim to be better need to step up and prove me wrong
@blindthief Pure karate????O_o Karate with something else but hits and kicks isn't pure karate?? I am getting very confident that you don't know anything about karate at all.:/
@NeverSoHonest What you wrote is clearly indicative of you being here just to try and insult my intelligence. The conversation is about Karate vs. Jiu Jitsu, and NOT about the specifics Karate or any form of martial art. I don't need to know or define what Karate is in order to prove it isn't superior to Jiu Jitsu. And are you telling me there aren't "in-betweens" out there? There are a ton of fighting styles that are a mix of different artforms. That's where the term, "pure" comes into play.
@blindthief When you compare two different styles, you should give reasons, which requires definition of both styles being compared. Yes there are "in-between" styles, however there is no universally qualified division about which ones are "pure" karate and which ones are not. That makes using the word "pure" very controversial.
@NeverSoHonest I don't have to define Karate. In MMA, while Karate is highly respected, it's not one of the top forms of martial arts that's proven to be the most effective. If I say a certain football team is superior because they just won the Superbowl, does that mean I have to know complete, detailed history of that particular team to realize it's the best squad in the league? When I say "pure" it's just my way of differentiating between the mixed arts and the ones that are not a blend.
@blindthief What martial art isn't blend? I don't think it is logical to think so black and white about karate an ju-jutsu. "karate is karate"? That's just not an explanation at all.. Karate style which includes throws, trapping, joint locks, holds, disengagements, grappling, striking, kicking and weapons, just to mention few. Is "pure" karate, yet it is A LOT like ju-jutsu. You are judging karate a lot, without bringing up for instance the karate style.
@NeverSoHonest Again, you're veering away from the topic. You're not listening. All you want to do is go off on some kind of pointless tangent about how you know so much about Karate. The question this: Is Karate more effective than Jiu Jitsu? I say NO (for now, until someone proves me wrong). Karate might be similar to JJ but in America nobody recognizes a JJ practitioner as a "Karate expert." Even though Asians are related to Native Americans, are Asian categorized as Natives? Think about it
@blindthief I know I'm repeating myself, but it is because I don't think you understand what I'm saying...maybe I just leave it...I don't know too much about karate. But I think there is a huge deal of it as a martial art, that you don't want to see. However, this is kyokushin topic... I don't see any reason at all for kyokushin guys to go out there to train MMA just to prove a few fools they deserve their place as much as the others.
@NeverSoHonest I respect all forms of martial arts. Just because I believe one art is better than another does not mean I feel one is useless. I'm pretty sure these Karate practitioners in the video would easily kill me in a fight. But that's not the point. I just believe Jiu Jitsu, for now, is the the better form of martial art. You're using what I call, "The Bruce Lee Argument." which implies one doesn't have to "prove" something to be great. Fine, but the way I see it: No work = No Pay
Karate can be useful against a normal person. but against a professional fighter it's just useless. They don't even keep their guard high to protect head
@CarlitoJohnson actually the kyokushin kan faction has started using elbows and facepunches. I know because my hanshi is from that faction but he broke apart from it.
@CarlitoJohnson First of all, Kyokushin is not a sport and there is a lot more in it besides the combat. Also the philosophy of those two styles is completely different. As said, Kyokushin had face punches too, they were taken away because it is not allowed to have them but not gloves. Without even mentioning the differences in the techniques!
@pastropmal but kyokushin is SO different man. i dont know how it can be considered anyhow traditional karate. it may use the same kihon and similar katas. but its application in the kumite is way different from waht original karates ideology was. one strike knockout. in kyokushin there is an ongoing flow of punches and kicks, timing is not as important.
@pastropmal i said kyokushin and thaiboxing are similalar i also said kyokushin is different from traditional styles of karate, and asked why it is considered karate at all
@MeesterChum balance, strength, concentration, toughness mind/body. The harsher you are towards your body in training the better the results (of course with proper technique, nutrition, recovery/rest). It's like any other tough training where you condition and toughen yourself. Higher altitude/lower air training, why? Because
in my mma dojo we train on judo mats. for grappling it is perfect. but for striking...it is really much harder. but also work outs are rly harder, ebcause the ground gives, so u need more energy to move. its like training in soft sand. or running on the beach. much harder, but better in the end
