Those prehistoric-looking beasts are HELLGRAMMITES, the predacious aquatic larvae of dobsonflies. They'll gorge on black fly larvae to mayfly nymphs underwater. They can be found year-round in the east, and the larval stage can last 2 - 3 years. They live beneath large rocks in swiftly moving parts of the river, like riffles and runs. When the adults hatch off, they generally do not even feed--just mate then die. They make great bait for smallmouth and catfish!
