I got this song from watching a short movie on Canadian Trains. They played this song when it was showing a train drive by as well as pictures of the crews that worked and died from 1880-1920 very touching. Wish I could have lived back during 1880-1966....
I hadn't heard this song since the 60's, and this filled my heart with 500 nostalgic emotions.
Every morning I send a Morning Wake-Up Call to all my friends. Yesterday's wake-up call was PP&M's Early Morning Rain, with 500 Miles as an encore.... Dang, I had tears running down my cheeks after playing these two over and over. The 60's were a rough time for some of us old hippies, and Early Morning Rain describes my being stranded in Europe in 1969 to a tee.
@Laurar44- i'm 47. i just met my father for the first time 3 years ago. it has not been going well. never met my mother, but thanks for sharing what you did, that was sweet
Watched the IMAX film Rocky Mountain Express today and this song was in it. Awesome way to get reacquainted with this song that I remember my parents playing when I was a child. Amazing movie!
When my mother and her sister's were younger this song was what they sang at camp. When my aunt was at the end of her battle with Huntington's Disease my mother played this for her up until she passed away. I'm so glad in the end it brought her joy.
The entertainment industry, just like any other industry, is only interested in selling. So it's good to see young ones who won't be puppets in the hands of unscrupulous businessmen.
Music is not just a commercial product. It's art, it's feelings.
When I was a child I always loved this song and I wondered why I ended up that far from my Family, so I created my own Family and now also have contact with my immediate Family thank you Lord.
I listened to this song after I left the army and seperated from my girlfriend, as I headed home in October of 1993. I was not on a train but it held the same emotion for me. I was heading home after I lost everything I wanted to hold. As the miles ticked off it seemed to me to just keep getting harder and harder, to both go home and to leave what I loved behind me.
My dad bought this album in 1962. Along with A new Admiral HI FI. Wow what A Christmas present. My wife Peggy still has the original album. I play it often and love it. Thank you Peter Paul and Mary
This is an incredible song. I have loved it since I was a kid. I finally made an attempt at singing it myself. Please stop by my channel sometime and see what you think of it.
I just lost my Dad 4/10/11 :( He was a music buff & especially loved Peter, Paul & Mary. I can still hear his beautiful voice singing "Freight Train" to me & my sister when we were little. Anyone have a version they can post here?
this song will now remind me of today 3/5/2011 - the day my dad died....we played it as we waited for the coroner to arrive..and when they took his body away....in the early 70's he'd have a few beers and listen to PP and M and dance withm y little brother.......today,, I listened to this song and said goodbye to my dad.
@rextrek I am so sorry for the death of your father. I just lost my mother on Feb 26 2011. Regrettably, we were estranged for most of my life. I really couldn't grieve like you grieve, but I do grieve for you. It seems that good parents ought to live long and happily. I am sorry for your loss.
@rextrek This song reminds me of my dad too, who passed away on Nov 23, 2001 when I was just 17 years old. Everytime I want to feel close to him, I'll listen to it. So far, I have listened to it 5 times today already.
@rextrek -- I cannot hear this song without thinking of my mom, who passed in 1995. After all this time, though, I can think of her with a smile and love. These songs bring Mom back in my memory -- God bless you in your time of mourning! :)
Now that's the real one - you can hear the difference that 2 guitars, a professional recording studio - and Mary's voice - make. Thanks Crisis for sharing this classic! As it happens, I don't have a digital version of this (only the old vinyl) and it's great to hear it again in stereo!

this is an old civil war ballad, after the war ended many northern soldiers had no ways of returning home and were left stranded in the south.

It moves to tears and comments.
What do you do and does such a wonderful person go to Heaven?
It is very near if Heaven is 500 Miles's distance.
Her beautiful singing voice is likely to be heard.
Are peaceful. Marie.

I am Sixteen and I wish music like this was more prevalent in today's society.
Seriously, it's so beautifully written and sung with such a pure voice that nothing will ever compare to the amazing Peter, Paul, and Mary<3
