Many critics, and the Temptations themselves, remarked that much of Masterpiece, sounded more like Norman Whitfield/Funk Brothers solo recordings rather than Temptations recordings.Masterpiece was the final Temptations LP recorded in Detroit at Motown's Hits-ville USA studio. By 1973, Motown Records had completed its migration to Hollywood, California,
@loosestudios Well I think people came to see the reality that The Funk Brothers made a lot of the singers. Which is why Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder pushed for the musicians credits.
When this came out, a guy I knew taught me how to "listen" to music! We'd sit and listen to every instrument that was played. Motown was REALLY music back then ! Put some headphones on when listening to this.....and listen to EVERY instrument!!!
@areyuwithme Hey Now...the exact same thing happened to me when I was in high school; Moses Harrison was his name, I'll never forget him having me to 'really' listen to everythang on this cut-I was never the same after that musical event. Thanks for the classic shared experience!

I love this version the best. I was just very young and little when I saw the commercial of this album being advertised on tv where it has a white guy with a hammer and chisel making a sculpture of these cats.
I wish our youth would sit down and listen to the message of this music.
The sky would be the limit. we have come a long way but we are not doing enough to eradicate the ghettos.we have become too lazy ,complacent and comfortable living in the GHETTO .
This is a real masterpiece of soul, funk and the blues. We shall never hear the likes of this great music again i was twenty five when this came out and it blew me away then and still does to this day.....
I was 27 now 65 living last yrs worse than King Lear and i told my lastdays' woman to cremate my body when i die my ash being scattered with Papa Was A Rollingstone or Masterpiece. She promised.
I am sorry folks but Grover Washingtons version is a lot BETTER, ' PAPA WAS . A Rolling Stone' is too similar and the better option, if you want this SOUND. but try 'ZOOM ' from the 1990 album, just as long and psychedelic and a lot more trippy and creative. ZOOM is the best post 60s track from the 70s, and from a band that does mostly LOVE and PROTEST SONGS, this was an amazing feat, to make a song that takes you to Saturn, Jupiter and a few other Galaxies, in the space of 10 minutes. '
I was only 10 or 11 when this was popular, but I loved this. Where I lived, the popular music station wouldn't play it much, and it made me mad having to wait and wait to hear it again.
this write here, all time favorite, one, of the temptation best ever dunn, what their saying than, for some reason,is even worst now, shame, but this music will live on and on for me,
The second version of the Temptations was good too! Damon Harris, Richard Street and Dennis Edwards along with Otis Williams and Melvin Franklin could still find hits!!

One of my all time favs of the 70s. This got me on the road to being a disco DJ, along with Gladys Knight, Stevie Wonder, War, and Elton John. I still have my vinyl record in good playing order.
They were way ahead their time,,,maybe ours too,we'll see . Enjoy.
