I don't get why people insist he was only joking. I mean, apart from the clearly untrue "i'm a nazi" bits, it was mostly him being honest. he says he "understands" hitler in a way and admits an admiration for speer. that does not make him an anti-semite, even if he does consider the Israeli state to be a "pain in the ass". people need to stop considering WW2 to be such a taboo subject and hitler to be such a demon. he was a ruthless political leader, like MANY others, but nothing more really.
I think he was joking for all the rumors against him, of being nazi etc. But then he realised he was joking about some nasty shits and he got embarrassed and did not know where to continue the conversation. Next time dont joke about this things and approache the subject in another way. Derp
Was he drunk? It is very difficult for Nazi sympathizers to gain an ear with many audiences. At this point he could have yelled "FIRE" in that room filled with people and been dismissed. He should do himself a favor and give the Holocaust another 500 years before even attempting to make light of it. If people are still alive who can painfully recall the horrors, it is just in the poorest of taste. :(!
It's like watching a wobbly, suicidal stand-up comedian... who hasn't quite got his punch-lines right... kind of 'unfocused'.... actually somewhat dumb..?
Denmark is somewhat a racist society, He is not an example though, he is just another red-faced moron. We are talking about 6 million Jews and misery around the world during WWII, and he finds it funny to joke about it. He should face harsher punishment like travel ban to most of the countries, social isolation internationally. I am not sure if he will be greeted to his country as Danish humor is different then rest of the world.
kirsten at the end "ooooh lars... that was intense"
lars : "oh come on"
lol foot in mouth syndrome. I guess the question was about his mother basically he found out his father was not his father a nazi was his father. dude is socially retarded but what good film maker isnt?
@1farahnaz Did you know that the zionist movement in Germany actually worked WITH the nazis to get most of the Jewish population to live in a Jewish state (not so different from what is now Israel). It seems Hitler's first thought wasn't to actually extermine the Jews, but rather to promote a mass emigration of them from Europe. In fact, I think it was Himmler who said that if he were a Jew, he'd be a zionist Jew...
@1farahnaz So in that order of ideas, the nazis wouldn't have given a damn about the horror the palestine population is enduring right know thanks to the Israeli government, as long as they could get the mayority of the Jews off Europe. And also, the zionist movement didn't mind the coercive methods used by the nazis against the Jews to promote that emigration (freezing bank accounts, kicking them out of their houses, confiscating their things, etc.)
Idiot people cant see the fear when he said what he said. The shock! "oh my!!" How dare he??!!. It should give you an idea of who is REALLY running America. Had he been talking about Arebs, mexicans, blacks, chinese, whites, or any other race,, he wouldn't be digging his way out of anything but laughter. Smart people know what i'm talking about. And I am an American, Arab Jew!! No bias here. Just real.
the movie industry is hypocritical! while Mel Gibson runs free - they kicked out Von Trier, who is not even remotely anti-Semitic, just has a bad sense of humor, and the guy from the oscars ("rehearsal is for fags!" ) who is not a homophobe, but a guy with a good sense of humour!
it's not about whether he is or not a fucking Nazi, it's the absolute IDIOCY of what he said and the fact he could have ended his career for being so FUCKING STUPID.
A perfect example of digging a hole for yourself. Seriously though, Lars isn't a Nazi sympathiser, just that he appreciates the Nazi avant-garde of aethestics. Were his jokes at Cannes 2011 inappropriate? Maybe, but for gods sake, the war ended over 60 years ago, get over it.
As the multiracial human that I am, Hitler has always been a thorn in my side, for he was a fine example of a classical artist. Yet, the Nazi aesthetic was not purely of Northern European origin. For example, when the foundation of classical architecture was developing Germanic people were still barbarians. Hitler tried to hijack the whole of western achievement and plant it on a fictitious Nordic Teutonic root. As for Lars, c'mon, he is not a Nazi.
I can understand some of their.. Reactions, but listen to the clip. People are fucking laughing. Sure, Lars really fucked himself in the mouth with that retarded sentence, but at the same time he's free to think whatever he wants (that's if he was a nazi, which he obviously isn't).
I just think he swayed between imagining the jews as both victims of WWII, and as "opressors" in the middle east.
This director is a disgrace! I'm sick & tired of the so-called "art" elites who, awash in money, have lost sense of reality and become commies or nazis. Von Trier "understands" Hitler? What's there to exactly "understand", Mr. Director?
@gpbakalov Why did Hitler liked chocolate ice so much. I guess that is the great unsolved question. And he got insight. I think that's what the press conference is about.
What no one gets is that well never know what he was saying, because he sort of left entire sentences out. If he understood the language better, and wasnt nervous at all, he probably would have explaind "Heres what I get about Hitler even though I dont support his hatred". Im not sticking up for him or putting him down, but its pretty undeniable that this speech was all over the place
@veictor1 I think you misspelled "creative, but socially retarded, genius". Last time I checked, von Trier was a controversial but remarkably talented filmmaker, and not a comedian. Saying he's not funny is like saying LeBron James is not a writer.
@YoonaNeomuYeppeoSeo Based on his films... Idiots, Antichrist, etc. Dogville is one of the worst movies I've ever seen (Although Melancholia is nice... "funny" at times)
he obviously suck at english... i dont know why he's even trying to translate his joking into another language because it doesnt work and when he cant pull off the language it just comes off as a bad attempt at humor
danes sometimes say things before they think them over and their humor is somewhat direct and not relateable but I gotta tell you - this guy isn't a nazi and even if he was, he wouldn't do anything to hurt anyone. There's nothing wrong with being whatever you want as long as you know exactly why you made that choice and you don't harm anyone. Only idiots take things to extremities, if a person is intelligent enough he'll be able to sustain his true personality, regardless of his beliefs.
@ConspX Ok --- Von Trier is not a Nazi, or a Jew. These identities are obviously playthings for him. Unfortunately for me, I find he has this same attitude with regard to his characters. He is sadistic, and I detect that the artist is exploring his own misanthropy through his work. I've enjoyed some of his movies, and I've even loved hating others.
I think what happened was that he trying to joke around, but the audience was so fucking dead that he just started rambling on and not really thinking about what he was saying. It happens to us awkward people.
i am a german, and i am shocked!! if i announce to be a nazi in public....i´ll be arrested! shame on you mr. trier! that´s not the right item to make fun about!
Give me a fucking break. People make me sick, they will defend Roman the pedophile Polanski until they're blue in the face but they will ban this dude from Cannes for making a somewhat inappropriate joke. He isn't racist or a Nazi, do you forget that he made Manderlay? He may be a little bit socially retarded but that isn't a crime. Cut him some slack here.
@malows1234 I didn't say anything about Roman Polanski's films! I know that he is a good filmmaker. I personally love Chinatown, Rosemary's Baby, The Ghost Writer, etc. However, that doesn't change the fact that he raped a little girl. That's not good, period. There is no way you can justify that. A 13 year old girl cannot consent to sex with a grown man. People will defend him all day long about this but they throw Von Trier under the bus for a stupid JOKE. It makes no sense.
@thelatestttplague Also, the reason I even bring Polanski up to begin with is because the people at Cannes actually petitioned for his freedom. Not because he was innocent(he already acknowledged the fact that he actually committed his crime) but simply because they love his art. The fact that he is a good artist doesn't mean he can get away with anything. The people at Cannes are beyond hypocritical for this. Am I really the only one who sees something wrong with this?
@thelatestttplague ok dude he did it a long time ago. everyone makes mistakes, let it go. he deserves his freedom. he has so much bad stuff happne to him during the holocaust, he deserves to make one single mistake after all that this bloody world has done to him. cut polanski some slack. and his films are masterpeices, well the good ones are anyhow.
@malows1234 Rape shouldn't NEVER be forgiven. That's why the law has no statute of limitations on it. That's not what I'm getting at though, I personally don't care if he is in jail or not because the victim herself said that she was passed that and she just wants to get on with her life. You're missing my point though. My complaint is that Cannes would rather support a known rapist/pedophile and allow to him attend than a guy who made a thoughtless joke. That's the issue here.
@thelatestttplague ya whatever though i agree, the cannes and most people are just a bunch of sensitive little bitches. this guy is clearly not a nazi, he is a practically dumb child who doesn't understand social contexts. most geniuses were socially fucked up. take the master Stanley Kubrick, who completely broke down in public, hence he was never in public. i agree that he should not have been banned.
what the hell? I've seen a youtube clip of a politician commiting suicide on camera and now I've seen an amazing director commit career suicide and it was actually more awkward. I like his films so this pisses me off because he probably won't get to make another one.
Check out Kirsten's reaction after d press conference (4:15) pretty much sums it all up. "Ooohh Lars...that was intense." Hysterical...I LUVITLUVITLUVITLUUUVVVIIIITT!!! XD
Get over it.... People are way too serious these days. Yes it is very terrible what Hitler did and also that people had slaves. But, thank god it's over ! Move on... You can tell this guy was trying to make a joke, which apparently bombed with the majority of people there. Kirsten apparently got some sort of blame for that (yes, i watched Ellen today) and that is totally ridiculous .....
@ITSMEBETTY50 OK and how might you react if there were jokes about 911? Certain things should not be joked about, has nothing to do with people being too serious, it has to do with respect. Move on? What because it's a part of history now, we can now say, "It's ok, it was just a joke, lighten up." NO WAY! Mis traeting people, bullying and such still goes on and we have become too tolerant of crap like this, so NO, not cute and yea, we should move on in a possitive way and with out the jokes.
Dang, Kirsten just straight out lied about this on Ellen. She said it all started when a reporter asked a totally inappropriate question about his Mother dying and finding out he had another dad. In fact she asked about an interview he had already done, nothing leading or inappropriate about the question.
Poor Lars - how embarrassing! But he's not a politician (thank goodness), he's an artist, and artists should be judged on their work, not on their lack of interview technique. It was despicable of Cannes to ban him. It's a FILM festival for God's sake. Where is their loyalty? Where is their support for their artists? Cowards!
I think it is important that you can speak freely about everything. But really - if he meant what he said: "he did SOME wrong things" or "he is not what you would call a good guy" And he meant it - because these were not the joking parts of his "sentence"Hitler was an insane and egomaniac person.I can understand why von Trier understands him.To give an insane person power is the most destructive thing you can do.Ours and his parents/grandparents allowed it: he and we suffer of melancholia...

The funny thing is that the media tend to focus on just one or two specific sentences and when only those are mentioned out of context from the rest of the conversation they sound very offensive. Also it's the fact that when you read these things in the papers they sound very serious because you cannot hear the sarcasm of his voice.
It's not his remarks but how the media have published his words that has made them sound really bad.
And "nazi" is somehow forbidden? Maybe you think the word "Jew" is also somehow taboo? The man is german and his parents almost certainly were nazis. They almost all were, by choice or not. That is his history. Should he deny it? He is reflecting. He said he understands hitler. Sympathizes even. Hey, I understand and sympathize with the man too. Same with Stalin. Same with Cheney. Same with Dahmer. Same with the devil. Big deal. Be real, friend.
He also said that what he said had been misinterpreted/misunderstood, in Denmark people may have understood his humour, its just the english that hindered him in bringing his humor forth :)
He even said that Hitler did wrong things he didn't like..so he pretty much left open what he liked about him or if he liked something about him at all (aside Albert Speer's architecture). So it is more about the art and architecture stuff he liked and certainly not the genocide. NOTE - he says "He is not for the second world war and not against jews". Him saying this and him saying "Ok i'm a nazi" in the next sentence should make you think. Doesn't make sense? -> Irony.

@SeparateRealityX listen now read this you fag... you said that when someones says he is a nazi and at the same time he doesn't hate jews it can't be? why? hitler just wanted the jews out of europe and germany not the world
Ok I have now often heard about him in the news about him telling Nazi-stuff and now I finally watched the interview. So what? Why do these people make a drama out of it? He was making fun. Some people just don't understand irony and are "a pain in the ass". Note that he is of jewish ancestry himself...Just because he likes the fashion, symbolism, architectural things of that time doesn't mean he likes the bad stuff aswell. For a fact the Germans were the best dressed soldiers ever.
@NobleHerold yeah right its so much of a joke that the Festival leadership banned him for life of even approaching the festival area... see, in Europe we are a little more sensitive to those remarks, especially when they come from exposed people like him..
and yes, apart of his answer having no connection whatsoever with the question asked, I believe he is utterly stupid
Lars got kicked out of Cannes for these comments. He said later that the French are very sensitive to anti-semitism because they treated the Jews badly during WW2. Today France has laws specifically against anti-semitic speech (see John Galiano case). I happen to agree with von Trier that the French feel guilty about the Vichy Regime of WW2 and have since tried to compensate.
Language barrier... its obvious that he cannot express himself adequately. Give the man a break.... it wasn't funny to me, but he was trying to be so. His lack of english language ruined the whole thing... I don't think he meant any offense at all.
LOL Kirsten Dunst is all like: "OOh ma GAWD I so can't believe he just said that!" when Lars is really just talking shit. xD Don't take him seriously man, he's just saying random sentences.

ITSMEBETTY50 3 months ago

But really - if he meant what he said: "he did SOME wrong things" or "he is not what you would call a good guy" And he meant it - because these were not the joking parts of his "sentence"Hitler was an insane and egomaniac person.I can understand why von Trier understands him.To give an insane person power is the most destructive thing you can do.Ours and his parents/grandparents allowed it: he and we suffer of melancholia...

dlrkaplan 4 months ago 2

-> Irony.

@SeparateRealityX listen now read this you fag... you said that when someones says he is a nazi and at the same time he doesn't hate jews it can't be? why? hitler just wanted the jews out of europe and germany not the world
ichhatte27zentimeter 4 months ago
@ichhatte27zentimeter cause Lars von Trier is a jew himself you prick and he even said that he was just joking.
SeparateRealityX 4 months ago
@SeparateRealityX lol cunt he said that he found out that he isn't a jew etc and it wasn't a simple joke you are just a faggot
ichhatte27zentimeter 3 months ago
Ok I have now often heard about him in the news about him telling Nazi-stuff and now I finally watched the interview. So what? Why do these people make a drama out of it? He was making fun. Some people just don't understand irony and are "a pain in the ass". Note that he is of jewish ancestry himself...Just because he likes the fashion, symbolism, architectural things of that time doesn't mean he likes the bad stuff aswell. For a fact the Germans were the best dressed soldiers ever.

he is so stupid... wow...
not only does he embarass all the actors in his movie participating in the press conference..
he downplays the murder of millions and the death of other millions, like Russian civilians in the war...
yes, Hitler was as great as you are intelligent Lars van Trier

@NobleHerold yeah right its so much of a joke that the Festival leadership banned him for life of even approaching the festival area... see, in Europe we are a little more sensitive to those remarks, especially when they come from exposed people like him..
and yes, apart of his answer having no connection whatsoever with the question asked, I believe he is utterly stupid

Lars got kicked out of Cannes for these comments. He said later that the French are very sensitive to anti-semitism because they treated the Jews badly during WW2. Today France has laws specifically against anti-semitic speech (see John Galiano case). I happen to agree with von Trier that the French feel guilty about the Vichy Regime of WW2 and have since tried to compensate.
crispycalamari 5 months ago 4
@crispycalamari
...it has nothing to do with french guilt. It's about out-of-control jewish lobby groups.

Language barrier... its obvious that he cannot express himself adequately. Give the man a break.... it wasn't funny to me, but he was trying to be so. His lack of english language ruined the whole thing... I don't think he meant any offense at all.
