that up and under against the Lakers is the greatest shot in the history of the league !!!! followed a close second by Birds follow up left hander against Houston.......respect !
It has been rumoured, that in one Dr. J's first games with the Nets (of the ABA, and an away game), he actually (and on a run, of course) jumped from the head of the free throw circle to dunk the ball. After the game, a reporter, noting the Doctor precociousness, asked him: "Dr.J: How did you possibly do that?"... A little surprised, the Dr. stared at him for 10 seconds... then said "Hey man, there are times when I get so pumped [during a game] I'd like to think I will dunk from half-court."
Want to make this video better? Turn the volume all the way down. Open another tab. Go to youtube. Search James Brown Payback. Play both videos at the same time. Enjoy much better.
This is the man who started it all....not jordan.....THE ORIGINAL! jumped from free throw line at a time when people were not even dunking...dunked on the best...DAMN I MISS HIM! CLASS!
@McDogginified : I completely agree with you. The amount of talent that classic R&B groups such as 'Bloodstone' had dwarfs this petty & vulgar garbage. It would have made a lot more sense to put a classic soul track on these snapshots of the great Dr. J. Nothing can compare to the old school classics when it comes to musicianship (Of course I'm referring about this particular genre of music.)
This video is why i get so mad at ESPN TNT and others when they talk about Jordan and never EVER Say this MANS NAME. He was destroying teams before people knew a Jordan existed..
Who will be the next Jordan who will be the next Magic. Did you people forgot about Dr. j???? Jordan was the 90s version of Dr. J..... !!!!!! So disrespectful .
@grownman455 My cousin who lived back then and my great uncle who is only in his 64 (my mom gave birth to me when she was a teen) told me about dr.j they said when they saw him they thought there would never be another him until they saw Jordan and said he was like Dr.J or probably even better. I actually like contact sports more but I only know about the new school like Wade and James.
@sonofaballer96 Yea that was always what people talked about could Jordan beaten Dr. J. Retired while I was still a little kid but I have watch his old games and he was a beast. I think would of been unstoppable in today's NBA. Not maybe people want to say it Lebron James is the next level once he gets his head together ..
I was trying to think of a '70s pro basketball "All Afro" team. Dr. J, Artis Gilmore and Darnell Hillman are the first three to come to mind. Ben Wallace has the best modern NBA afro.
loose ball going towards the 6er basket Dr J racing Charles Dudley & Charles Johnson GSW in Oakland Dr runs past the ball reaches back picks it up one handed off the bounce slams it with out a dribble . from just below the FT line. Most amazing play that only 14thousand GSW fans saw. It was his first game as a Sixer vs the Barry lead GSW. Barry vs Doc were ultimate battles they each enjoyed success against ea other
When I think of basketball in that era it was Dr J with the leaping as Afro!! He was the MJ during that time and was/is a class act during and after his time in the NBA!
His first rookie year in the ABA was 1970-71 season. He joined the team shortly after the Squires drafted him in '71. They had Charlie Scott, The Ice-Man, and Dr J on the same team! Dr J did not play much that year. There were less than 15 games left when the Doc joined that team as the ABA did not have rules against it. That is also why he was eligible for Rookie of the Year in the 1971-72 season. The Doc was John Wall fast his first 2 years...unreal and I saw it in person up close!
I was a huge Colonels fan!! I saw the Doc in person, 2nd/3rd row a lot of times! He was so fast! especially his 2 ABA rookie years. By the time he hit the NBA he didn't jump as high and lost a tad of his speed. In basketball experience is just as important as athletic ability. (who can argue that 25 yr old MJ was a better athlete than at 30? but who can argue a 30 yr old MJ was a greater threat to win a championship than 25 yr old MJ)
@itsmecarl25 vince carters hands are 9.5 inches from base of palm to end of middle finger,Dr,J's were 11 inches. That's the size of some baseball gloves!
Great dr J but poor and bad music, listen, whenever you do a video of whoever or whatever from other decade or era, put music from that period, it will create the proper atmosphere for the whole video. Its like a medieval film with contemporary music, no sense at all.
Trust me when I say, that this team would destroy any other team that can be put together. Julius and Jordan have big hands, and Pistol can pass just about anywhere. Olajuwon is quick and Duncan is clever. Last but not least, everyone can score and defend. Case closed.
@Stefan932 Denzel is 56 years old. DJ is only 5 years older than him. Would be a shit biopic with a 56 year old actor playing the part of the best athlete of the era.
The start of this video was a bit disturbing and we could do without that ridiculous, nasty rap "music". But there is no denying the sheer grace and beauty of the Doctor!
@eagleboy201 I doubt it, and had the opportunity to see most of them. Julius was being polite when he said that. Iverson was a very good player, but also a selfish one, who hurt his team more than he helped them.
There are very few elite players, and Dr. J was one of them.
@eagleboy201 dude like imagine Dr.J saying "I am the best human that ever wore the sixers jersey"... it would sound wrong, people will think he's selfish-loves the fame, and stuff and people will start hating him... if iverson was interviewed he would have said that Dr.J was the greatest sixer. so shush up Dr.j compared to iverson is like an elephant compared to an ant
This rap with the cuss words in it just seems so wrong in this Dr. J video. I'm sure Dr. J wouldn't want all this cussing in a rap that's supposed to represent his video. Dr. J was never for all of that, he was a man with class, and this rap track goes against him being portrayed as a class act.

ball be lookin like an orange in Dr. j's hands, that guy had massive hands, there are 0 i mean 0 guards before or after him that could hold the ball like him. that 2 steps with the ball in one hand enabled him to score at will inside.
