  • The basters managers cared about for their salary only, not for the safety of the people whom brought their salary by flying the air plains. And now the hero maintenance man who intended to save the plane from destruction can no longer work for the company, instead of receiving honor for the suggestion of changing that screw ! .....Killers !

  • To all the folks who decry "capitalist greed" as the root problem here, I remind you that capitalism is the very reason we have machines like this in the first place. Also, some of the worst disasters occurred in Communist Russia, where capitalist greed played no factor (Kursk, Chernobyl, ring a bell?).

Cutting cost is a way of life. I wonder how many of you hypocrites drive cars with balding tires or worn brakes, risking others' lives because you'd prefer to not spend money on a fix.

  • Time and again it's capitalist greed that causes these crashes. Maintenance crews were under pressure to save money to make bigger bonuses for those at the top. If governments weren't in league with the fat cats they'd introduce strict corporate manslaughter laws where the buck stopped at the top, with long prison sentences rather than fines which, even if exemplary. allow a company to simply declare bankruptcy and reopen under a new name. Whistleblowers' jobs should also be protected by law.

  • Technology is reducing pilot error, but there is no computer against greed and corruption, this kind of problems will remain, likely until laws are in place to held high ranking executives accountable of criminal charges and making fines so damn high that paying them become financially troubling.

  • Rather than focusing on the tragedy and loss of lives, people always seem to comment about anything and everything else. This series makes me appreciate just being alive.

  • The entire airline industry worldwide is corrupt and profit driven.

You can't expect honesty and moral behaviour from ANY company when money is involved.

Things will not improve until there are laws in place that make the ones who are truely responsible accountable.

The only real way to stamp it out is to make the company executives themselves criminally liable for their actions and have severe penalties and long term maxium security imprisonment for those found guilty.

  • the ATC just didn't understand what the horror was until it deadly crashed in the sea

  • I believe in the power of the free market, but it seems that the power of the market is unable to grease a Jack Screw.

  • @77thewaz The power of the "free" market, (which allows free transit of money across borders to find the cheapest labour, but not for people to find the best jobs), may be unable to grease a jack screw, but it has no problem at all greasing palms whenever necessary to ensure governments turn a blind eye to their profiteering at the expense of innocent lives. Thanks to their funding of political parties no corporate manslaughter regulations have been passed that would stop this kind of practice.

  • capitalism is wrong.

  • They should have sent the Alaska Airline executives to the gallows, that would make other airlines take notice.

  • If this had happened in China, they would have hung the people responsible...weak American laws FTL

  • RIP for all victims and may god bless their families.

Big boys make money while others have to pay the price...what a shame

  • John Leontine is a big time hero i with aero peru had a lead mechanic like him alaska airlines and aeroperu pilots Capts Dan Thompson, Eric Shriver and first officers Ted Dansky and David Fernandez true heros what suprise that alaska survived such lawsuites because they were trying tosavemoney and they lost more just like aero peru lawsuites lack of supervision and negligence they went bankrupt my peruvian fiance lost her ucle on flight 603 my respects to all R.I.P

  • This really scary !! But it is not only in the airline industry this cutting corner happend !! Watch Toyota and its Prius or the petroleum company which are doing less and less maintenance !!

  • See, this is what companies get when they are greedy. Tragedy strikes. This is their retribution. I just wish it wasn't paid in the form of innocent lives :(

  • the managers should be convicted for murder.

  • @methanbreather men slaughter at the very least

  • @methanbreather ITS NOT THERE FAULT THEY PROBABLY FORGOT TO REPLACE IT

  • @methanbreather the owner u mean **

  • I've flown that airline so many times. Gives me the creepies to think I might've flown on that very MD-80. I was wondering why the engineers don't, in hindsight, design a sort of mechanical bar and some sort of stop at both limits. Just in case this kind of thing ever happens again. Sure, it's going to be VERY hard on the pilots but, if that thing can't move to max limits, they might have a better chance. Those two pilots NEVER stopped flying that plane.

  • @aviationwingnut

I have 2600 flights? landed with the plane about 2575 times. Only one 'emergency exit'. hehe, my fault...i skydive. Plane landed safely...as did us all.

  • what happened to the bastards management of this airline?

I hope they went bust and lose all their assets. May all those responsible for such tragedies rot in hell.

  • This was their only accident related to maintenance of aircraft since the airline was formed on D-Day. They fly to 91 destinations, and now are an all Boeing 737 fleet, with 112 planes. Their parent company, Alaska Air Group has assets of about 5 billion, with yearly revenue of about 3.7 billion.

  • I hear you. However an error is still an error. Whatever statistics they hold its still an error by management.

No one will ever be satisfied with what they have and they will just want more. If you look at most accidents they happen because of management forgoing safty for money.

  • just watching the relatives speak so dearly about their loved ones was almost unbearable, and as a junior pilot i can't imagine what that captain and first officer went through in there...almost makes me think twice about pursuing my licenses. those 88 lives are worth so much more than the few dollars they would have saved...

  • wow... the worse parts are the testimonies of relatives. No further words.

  • very sad

  • I boarded a DC9 once and an MD 80 once. Once was already too many times. As a pilot I understand aircraft systems, but as a passenger, these videos are a must to see to evaluate the choices we have to use airlines who have a modern fleet and great maintenance. Don't always go for the cheepo airlines. It just increases the risks of flying!

  • And they take the ONE guy that is a true blue stand up professional with integrity, and they see to it that he cannot work in the industry at all. It's just absurd!

  • I apologize to you I went to give your comment a thumbs up ProtoCosmos and hit the wrong key. Youtube needs to have a reverse option for that. I agree with you 100% the guy who loves his job and is doing exactly what he's supposed to be doing is the one that loses his job..and you know the sad thing he's such a stand up guy I bet he still carries the burden on his shoulders..I highly doubt Alaska Airlines does. Very tragic. Just wanted you to know it should have been a thumbs up!

  • Hey, no problem. I've done the same thing before.

Thanks for your reply....and yes it certainly is very tragic. Have a good evening.

  • Gretschster6120 flying these crappy planes take lots of courage. If I ever want to commit suicide or die early, I would fly these planes.

  • Gretschster6120

Your comment on the DC9 and MD809 make no sense whatsoever. While later aircraft (like the B757 and B767) are safer due to lessons learned and better design tool (e.g. computer aided design, as on the B777), the MD80 is one of the safest planes period. The rudder design is robust AND redundant (unlike the POS older B737s). It's not perfect, but I would feel very safe on the MD80 variant, provided it is flown by an airline with a good safety record,

  • True...what a horrible way to die so an airline can make more money !!!
