This is such a sad video, it must have been heartbreaking to watch those horses suffer knowing they could do nothing for them. It is scandalous the owner hasn't provided any shelter for these animals...
were the owners of these spectacular horses brought up on animal cruelty...for not providing any type of shelter...breaks for them? All my life I Am angered by ppl getting any type of animal & not providing cover for them. If they were in the wild of course they would have places that would provide protection. They are pinned in cut off from being able to get away from such deadly weather.
@xevanescencexloverx6 if a person can not provide adequate shelter for animals that they "pin/trap" whether that is by fences or lines...then they should NEVER have any animals. It's like everything else...if you can't afford it...then don't get it!
@HigherWaysWoman i wasn't taking about the whole shelter i agree with you there but i was talking about what if they dont have the money to sound proof them
@xevanescencexloverx6 I see...thanks for clarifying this...agree w/you as well! I really shouldn't watch any forms of cruelty to animals. Those who do this unspeakable acts...it brings up in me such a deep hatred towards them. I would like to see certain aspects of rodeo & especially mexico bull fighting to become illegal. But that will have to wait until societies advance themselvws. Prob'ly be a long wait since child abuse has yet to be conquered. "Always" take care, Be Blessed n Be Well.
I believe I just saw you recently on the Weather Channel on one of their programs. White car, (Buick, maybe) that got destroyed by hail? Was that you?
Even if horses have shelter they might not go under it. The sound of hail on a roof scares them and just as likely to go running out into a storm. I've been caught in a hail storm out in the barn with horses. Even when they had a halter on I could not stop them from running out. They preferred to be outside with tails into the wind.
I own 5 horses and this is the first time I've ever seen how a horse reacts to hail. Horses are very strong animals with thick hide, but you have to remember that they're able to feel a fly land on their back. Imagine what a giant piece of ice must feel like. They obviously had no shelter whatsoever, so their natural instinct made them huddle around each other. But since they are animals and only have the attention span of a 3 year old child, they didn't think about covering the foal.
Dam this video was messed up. watching those horses standing there getting belted by hail. it was like watching someone throw rocks at a baby, they cant do nothing but sit there and take it.
@thegoosebrain These are not "just" a bunch of animals and his car prob isn't worth as much as one of these horses. The guy cares more about the horses than some can on wheels. This tells the guy has a heart. Where's yours ?

4 poles and wooden roof ? Every animal needs shelter no matter what type of weather. Even a simple horse blanket is to much to ask for some horse owners.
The horses seem to know what to do in this kind of event and this goes for most animals,iv seen geese point there beaks up to the sky to stop them been hit on the head by the hail.
@scotty1045 I noticed that too. Looks like they're protecting their faces. Plus it keeps the number down on how many hail stones hit them in the rib cage.
@141188Steven Yeah but sadly if there are no trees there screwed, had a friend loose a foal to hail once. Moved out west and bought 10acres were at work and no one was there to bring the new baby in found the little thing dead.
This area is known for storms like this.... the owner should be prosecuted for not having a place for the horses to take cover. or better yet, the next time a hailstorm comes, he should be made to stand out in it >:
oh I feel bad for them . That must really hurt when having a baseball thrown at you like a 100 mph. They should have like a little shack to take cover in.
Ow poor horses! They need at least some type of canopy to run to when the weather gets like that. I've been hit by smaller hailstones and that hurt enough, can't imagine getting pelted by that size of hail!
Wow it looked like some of them horses were close to being KO'd. A few times some of them staggered back a few steps then got control back before their backends went down. And when they kick that means F*#@$ing OUCH!!! They need some kind of shelter in them situations.
shit poor buggers... that hail looked liek ti was coming down at a fair old rate and it wasnt small either... be a couple of bruised rumps after that one
We have showhorses. From what I see the problem isn't the hail. They seem okay to just wait that out. The problem is the kicking of a surprised horse can cause all sorts of injuries to other horses. Our horses have access to an overhang in case of rain or hail. Just a precaution really. Scars on showhorses can lose value to the horse.
Anyone who keeps horses in their care has an obligation to provide them with clean water, clean feed, a clean place to live and shelter. If people cannot figure out the basics, they shoudl not be allowed to keep them in their care. And to you in particular, your last sentence tells me plenty.
And what are you insinuating? My sister's horses are well taken care of. I was only stating fact. A scar on a registered showhorse WILL cause the horse to be worth less. However, horse on our farm even with a scar is NO less looked after than the others. The difference is they just don't get entered in the shows. The horses belong to my sister and she loves them all very dearly.
So I'd appreciate people not making rude comments based on one sentence taken out of context.
THESE horses had nowhere to go, yet you focused on the monetary value of a horse instead of their comfort or well being. Animals, if they are free, move from a storm or find shelter. But to lock an animal in a field, and not provide them with a way to get out of the weather is wrong. How can you watch that video and say they seemed okay to wait it out, then end your comment by stating that shelter for yours is just a precaution, to not lose value to them as show horses? Wow.
First of all, as I said the horses are NOT mine. I have no say and nothing to do with them at all. I do know that horses have a thick skin esp in early spring just after they've gone through the winter, so although a hailstone is going to be uncomfortable, it's not going to seriously hurt them unless we're talking about baseball hail. It's the KICKING that will do the horses harm.
As for my sisters horses, she of course sees them a whole different way then I do.

you are an inhumane prick sir. Horses are not to be caged up for show. you are one of the reasons our natural world is becoming the way it is. Just like the dolphin business in taiji, animals should not be locked up like that.
Also you were the jerk who mentioned caged. We have no cages here, and the horses on our farm probably live better than you do. Just because they happen to be in Horse Shows doesn't mean they are caged up in a zoo or something. Maybe you should go back to protesting the poor dolphins, because you have no clue what you're talking about here.
If you do not know about horses, please don't comment. That was a ridiculous thing to say. Horses are extremely sensitive, and you can be sure they felt every piece of hail that hit, and it did not feel good.
The horses just said "screw it" and stood facing away from the hail stones. Even though horses are used to storms, that hail still has to have hurt to get hit by it.
As much as I agree with what ellieysama and some of the others say, I grew up in Texas. We owned a very large ranch. If a storm came, we were taught that no matter how much we love the animals, we have to save our families first. Animals can adapt much better than we can, and have a higher rate of survival IN a storm such as this. It may be cruel to say, but you have to think about the time it would take to go out there and round up all of the animals before the storm actually hit.
Please People! The horses were fine. They're not stupid and they know how to handle this type of weather much better than we do. I live in Lubbock and we get hail like this a couple of times a year. Guess what?!! No dead or injured animals. Animal rights people should keep their mouths shut about things they know nothing about.
My God! who the fuck owns those horses i wanna kick his fat hearded hick ass! thats cruelty! if he knew a fucking storm was moving there he should at least open the gate to where the stables are those poor animals had no choice but to endure it hell many of them tried to jump the fence to find shelter! damn that ignorant bitch thats very irresponsible, still trying to warn the farmer should of been a good idea >> hope they survived.
I am a horse lover, and sure, i feel badly about those poor animals. However, a hailstorm is a natural occurrence, and horses are obviously an originally wild species. All sorts of animals go through this, and they have their natural precautions. I understand where you are coming from, but still, you can't blame the handler for something that A.) he couldn't have helped, and B.) Something that the animals already know what to do by instinct. Horses are fine, they go through this stuff every day.
@Excypwnsall It seems to me though that they didn't have any shelter. Wouldn't they otherwise have gone there if they did? They probably would have found some if there wasn't a fence in the way.
@Excypwnsall If they were in the wild of course they would have places that would provide protection. They are pinned in cut off from being able to get away from such deadly weather. In otherwords...the horses were "trapped" & it was HUmans who did this to them w/out considerations for their welfare. Ppl who do such things should NEVER BE ALLOWED TO HAV ANIMALS OF ANY KIND!!
haha ok thats a good point but i live not far from those actual horses and they have a full size set of stalls with a large cover. I'm from the town smyer (which u can see on the soad sign in the video) and i pass those horses twice a week.Fuckin retards dont understand that you have to let animals be animals. i have raised animals all my life and thats one thing u learn quick. You dont need to comment on tings YOU dont know either.
You could be a little more sensitive about this, animals can get confuse when something like this happens because theyre not like us nor certainly think like us when it comes to prevention or how to take action, jesus! >> and its the responsibility of the owner to be there even before the storm comes to take the horses to the stalls or stables so they wont get confuse or panic.
like many others say, horse have tons of years experiance with Hail, they are native american animals and there has been hail since there was rain and storms. Also to point out, you cannot always tell if its just gonna rain or hail, should you put horses in stalls in every storm? and make them really uncomfortable becuase you are than changing their natural instincts of grouping togeather? what if lightning hit he stall and it burnt with all them in it... did you think of that?
Okay so point prover, Neither is hail Natie to only America, it can hail all over the world. And Actually there were horses in NAmerica when there was still a connection between alaska and asia.
If there was a tornado I wasn't aware. I heard reports of 3 inch hail around Lubbock later that day. We did get a multivortex tornado developing near Amherst a couple of hours earlier from real close range, probably a quarter mile away. We followed that storm from near Earth,Texas around mid-afternoon.
i feel bad for the horses but nothing can really b done, even if a small shelter was built doesnt mean the horses with get the idea to take cover, wild animals best defence for weather is running
ok i am a horse rider. and it was the best idea to allow the horses out. Horses will hurt themselves if confined in such a situation. ok so now that that is clear we can all stop fighting about it.
Yeah let them play in the road and possibly kill a human while they are at it. There is nothing for the guy in the car to do at that point but hope the horses survive.
This is the horse owners fault. He or she is a real dumb ass and should be given a hefty fine or the horses should be taken away for not giving the horses a field storm shelter to gather under. A simple over hang with simple posts is all you need. Many farms have these for both horses, cattle and other livestock with feeding troughs in the center of them throughout the plains.
Great vid but i feel bad for the horses. Theyre real tough animals but that hail was big and mustve hurt like hell.
To whoever is mad cause the cameraman didnt "save them", I take it youve never tried to work with horses when theyre confused and pissed. Also theres no room for them in the car lol. ;)
Sad that they to endure that pain, a couple things to note, 1 that they came to the fence, and waited there they just did not all run about in confusion, 2 that must have really hurt to get a kicking reflex. 3 the sadist of all if you watch closely some of them were nearly knocked out, their legs almost give out. Hope physical damage occurred.
The winds are nice & High! I feel bad for the horses though, you would have to be an idiot to go outside in this, id rather go outside in a hurricane at cat 5 strengh than go outside in hail.
Hey "cyclonejimcom" Always wanted to be a storm chaser, but im just an everyday factory worker telling you that I think you should have stayed right in that truck!!!!! Gotta feel bad for those poor horses but the "why didn't you save them?" question is a bit of a laugh isn't it? What a moron.......
What kind of question is that?? What person would go out in golfball size hail on private property and herd those horses and try to get them to shelter which there was no cover on that farm. Anyone who would attempt such a challenge would never get them to cooperate under those conditions.
That was my question, anyone with horses in this part of the country should have cover for them. This hail event was bad enough, (golfball size). Im wondering what the owner would do for them when the baseball hail occurs, and it will someday, it is not uncomon in that area of the country.
I know the vicinity of this video. I remember the storm because I was working that day and praying it wouldn't hit my car. It barely missed where I was.
This is such a sad video, it must have been heartbreaking to watch those horses suffer knowing they could do nothing for them. It is scandalous the owner hasn't provided any shelter for these animals...

well maybe they didnt have a shelter to go to? did you think of that?
AirForcedude5 3 years ago 8
haha ok thats a good point but i live not far from those actual horses and they have a full size set of stalls with a large cover. I'm from the town smyer (which u can see on the soad sign in the video) and i pass those horses twice a week.Fuckin retards dont understand that you have to let animals be animals. i have raised animals all my life and thats one thing u learn quick. You dont need to comment on tings YOU dont know either.
aggie7272 3 years ago 2
You could be a little more sensitive about this, animals can get confuse when something like this happens because theyre not like us nor certainly think like us when it comes to prevention or how to take action, jesus! >> and its the responsibility of the owner to be there even before the storm comes to take the horses to the stalls or stables so they wont get confuse or panic.
ellieysama 3 years ago 2
like many others say, horse have tons of years experiance with Hail, they are native american animals and there has been hail since there was rain and storms. Also to point out, you cannot always tell if its just gonna rain or hail, should you put horses in stalls in every storm? and make them really uncomfortable becuase you are than changing their natural instincts of grouping togeather? what if lightning hit he stall and it burnt with all them in it... did you think of that?
draconite420 3 years ago
not all stalls now days are wooden though. in an open area like that people like to use metal sheds
tupac4life14 3 years ago
Maybe not a closed stall, but they should have some type of open shed they can go into.
gulfcoastdude 3 years ago 3
True :) They can take it
DRUCO316 3 years ago
Actually, horses are NOT native to America...
LadyKatika 3 years ago
Okay so point prover, Neither is hail Natie to only America, it can hail all over the world. And Actually there were horses in NAmerica when there was still a connection between alaska and asia.
draconite420 3 years ago
If there was a tornado I wasn't aware. I heard reports of 3 inch hail around Lubbock later that day. We did get a multivortex tornado developing near Amherst a couple of hours earlier from real close range, probably a quarter mile away. We followed that storm from near Earth,Texas around mid-afternoon.
cyclonejimcom 3 years ago
Hey Jim! Good vid. Didn't that storm system produce tornadoes east of Lubbock, or am I thinking of the wrong date?

Poor horses. They should have been inside.

The rancher should have paid attention to the forecast and gotten the horses to the barn ahead of time.

Poor horse :'(.
RowanAthikson 3 years ago
ok i am a horse rider. and it was the best idea to allow the horses out. Horses will hurt themselves if confined in such a situation. ok so now that that is clear we can all stop fighting about it.
horseluverxxxx1234 3 years ago
Yeah let them play in the road and possibly kill a human while they are at it. There is nothing for the guy in the car to do at that point but hope the horses survive.
moobie1010 3 years ago
This is the horse owners fault. He or she is a real dumb ass and should be given a hefty fine or the horses should be taken away for not giving the horses a field storm shelter to gather under. A simple over hang with simple posts is all you need. Many farms have these for both horses, cattle and other livestock with feeding troughs in the center of them throughout the plains.
Nimbostratus1111 3 years ago
lol. that short horse was running beside the bigger one. thats how you surving. use fat people as shields!
elementskaterxl 4 years ago
Good heavens. Those poor things. I feel bad for them.
It sounds like rocks are hitting your car. It makes me wonder if all storm chaser cars are identified by the millions of pock marks on their vehicles!
lateintheday2007 4 years ago
if you watch, they turn and face the opposite way the hail is coming. probably the best thing to do.. i bet it hurt like hell though
ksbell27 4 years ago
tenderised meat!
MrTard 4 years ago
Great vid but i feel bad for the horses. Theyre real tough animals but that hail was big and mustve hurt like hell.
To whoever is mad cause the cameraman didnt "save them", I take it youve never tried to work with horses when theyre confused and pissed. Also theres no room for them in the car lol. ;)
Props2u 4 years ago
Sad that they to endure that pain, a couple things to note, 1 that they came to the fence, and waited there they just did not all run about in confusion, 2 that must have really hurt to get a kicking reflex. 3 the sadist of all if you watch closely some of them were nearly knocked out, their legs almost give out. Hope physical damage occurred.

TYPEO I meant I hope "NO" Physical Damaged Occurred!!

The winds are nice & High! I feel bad for the horses though, you would have to be an idiot to go outside in this, id rather go outside in a hurricane at cat 5 strengh than go outside in hail.
NeoCotex34 4 years ago
Hey "cyclonejimcom" Always wanted to be a storm chaser, but im just an everyday factory worker telling you that I think you should have stayed right in that truck!!!!! Gotta feel bad for those poor horses but the "why didn't you save them?" question is a bit of a laugh isn't it? What a moron.......
zanny4me 4 years ago
POOOOOR HOOORSES!!! Why did you not save them!
blaze4life0005 4 years ago
What kind of question is that?? What person would go out in golfball size hail on private property and herd those horses and try to get them to shelter which there was no cover on that farm. Anyone who would attempt such a challenge would never get them to cooperate under those conditions.
cyclonejimcom 4 years ago
lmao off, thats soo funny, both of you
kblundell 4 years ago
Sure, let me put them in the back seat real quick. Proof positive that most animal rights wackos have absolutely no common sense. What an idiot.

Yes, they did. After the hail stopped we saw them go on like before it started. Only thing is that their backs were stinging some for awhile.

Did all the horses survive?
larry84988 4 years ago
Where was the barn plus the owner
cdkpfreese 4 years ago 2
That was my question, anyone with horses in this part of the country should have cover for them. This hail event was bad enough, (golfball size). Im wondering what the owner would do for them when the baseball hail occurs, and it will someday, it is not uncomon in that area of the country.
cyclonejimcom 4 years ago
where was the barn.???

they will survive.. look how they turn their behinds in the wind.. very sad but all mother nature
