A BBC investigation has found that nearly 50 women identified as typhoid carriers were locked up for life in a mental asylum in Surrey. As carriers of the disease they were not ill themselves, but were deemed a public health risk.
i worked in west park in the mid eighties....the video brought back some memories...i think one of the wards shown was drummond ward.....it was a great place to work.
That part was if you go through the big hall with no roof at 0:17 on this vid, and then take some stairs down in the corridors beyond. There's strange sounds down there, but to be honest its fuckin dangerous cos the floors are giving way, and security came for me but i got away HAHA
lmao . we had 2 police cars , a meat wagon a police cctv mobile unit and 2 fire engines , apparantyl because of the dangers of the asbestos there , and there was only 5 of us .
Looks so different. I was a student there late eighties. The water tower threw me, but obvious shhot from a different angle than what I was used to. The padded cell was a storeroom really and kept for prosterity, The tunnels were fun on the way home from the social club, very scary! You didn't want to be down there on your own. It's quite amazing that buildings will deteriorate so fast once left derelict. Makes for good footage I suppose. Thanks for posting
I worked in West Park for a short while in the early 80s. It was horrific. The staff were almost as institutionalised as the long -term patients, who were left sitting in chairs around the walls of the "day room" with nothing to do but cadge cigarettes off each other. I could write a book about it.
yeah, but there are huge holes in the fence and me and too mates got in. got scared because there are too deers running about haha. if you keep to the walls you wont get caught and if anyone was too come you could get into a bush or door-way. the only thing i did not like was it feels really nasty when you walk about some parts.
the narration is an edited version of two piece of work about people who were in mental asylums and wrote them while they were there. I Am by John Clare and These are my sisters by Lara Jefferson

An absolutely stunning video. The best video of any asylum on all uploads. The fact it is moving film and not just still photos makes it so much more real. Brilliant.
thank you i am happy you liked it so much, funny you mention the moving camera because that is something that my film tutors didn't liked about the film for when they saw it, so thanks. By the way there is no photos in there it was all done with a film camera.
Hi I'd just like to say that this film sent chills down my spine. You have handeled it in an utterly beautiful way, and it is by far the best film I have found looking at West Park and Cane Hill uploads. I'm amazed more people havent written more comments. I'm going to pm you about it now. Seriously brilliant work.
the only thingabout you lot who want to go there is it has been knocked down now so sorry to be the bringer of bad news

@tommyladz i don't remember exactly where it was but it was hidden away and the security guards got it out for us to film.

MikeMJPMUNCH 2 years ago
Wow, that's gross i can't believe they didn't clear it up afterwards. I bet it stank.
