Brook attempts to capture the absurdist/nihilist locus of King Lear. This is what you misunderstand the "boring" to be. I suggest viewing Olivier's performance.
There was a time in my life when I used to fall to sleep listening to Paul Scofield's Lear. For weeks I'd listen to these BBC audio casettes. No distracting images, just words well spoken. What a play! What acting! Lear over and over again.
I love both Scofield's and Olivier's interpretations of the character. Apples and oranges -- very different, and very phenomenal.

This has to be the most boring Lear I have ever seen in my life. What's with the monotone. Give it some DRAMA!

I think I understand every line in Shakespeare when Paul Scofield speaks it.
