Lord knows just what the divine Ms Scotto is doing on this clip?
She was only 47 at the time so we cannot put it down to age,when she is not shrieking she seems to be right out of breath,a very strange way of singing this.The top notes are quite painful.
She was(generally) very good right up to her retirement,so we must just assume that this was a bad night for her?
LOL, she doesn't sound evil or menacing, she sounds frightened and out of breathe, if she can't really sing comfortably in the low register why even attempt this role? Oh yeah, she wanted to be like Callas.
If anyone thinks that Callas has a small voice.. they need to listen to this abomination.. Scotto was a perfectly lovely lyric voice until Levine got a hold of her and ruined her.
@kgarmaker123 Yes, but by the time they started working together at the Met, she already started these repertoire. Mutti was the one that convinced her to do Abigaile in Nabucco and other stuff. He didn´t make the choices for her. You got that wrong. Besides, this was in the 80´s.

La que da pena porque obviamente no sabe un carajo, eres tú niña. Te guste o no, Renata Scotto fue una de las grandes sopranos del siglo 20. Por algo era famosa. fue dirigida por grandes directores, cantó en las mejores casas del mundo, grabó discos, etc...

Levine didn´t ruine her voice. Besides, who brought and convinved her to do this repertoire was Mutti, not Levine. That´s what I always heard.

@ezayi Interesting that Levine is the conductor... He had a huge impact on SCotto and .. the choices he made for her, were wrong.
