  • Hay Theanalogical,(should be annonothing).Dead men tell no tails.I'v spent some time with John,He's a real down to earth man.Baverlay must have been a saint(not). And it's about the music not the man.Take a look at your self, what have you done!!If I was you,I'd take your comment down! What will they say about you when your dead.?

  • A great musician does not a great man make..I love his music but his abusive treatment of his wife Beverley does not make him this great person, we are not our persona we are who we are.RIP John. and before anyone tells me to shut up etc etc i had agreat night out with his wife and we compared and shared our experiences.

  • Absolutely FUCKING INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!!

  • legend, but who catches gout in this day and age?

  • 6 don't want to know

  • What a presence. Love this as much as the tune on Solid Air. The breakdowns, and his rasp of a voice makes it really justifiable to how much of a great song this is.

  • Don't Want To Know 'Bout Evil and berlusconi..Only Want To Know 'Biout Love and John, Nick, C. Twins, Blue Nile, David Sylvian and all tne people I love

  • Last time I saw this Man was on a show called songwriter's circle. He was a bitolder than on this video, and had even more of an insight whilst singing this song There was an even more sage quaity about it...if that's at al possibe.

  • Aye, Dr. John did a mint cover of this too... Methinks that be Donal Lunny from Moving Hearts on bouzouki...

  • John was The man

The drum is a djembe an african drum and very popular in modern folk/celtic music

  • I love the last few seconds of it, you could tell he was just so proud of what he'd done by bringing those musicians together, Brilliant

  • Holy Zork!!! what a voice....

  • Johnny too bad was the documentry. it is on google video. Check out big muff on youtube with Danny. Amazing. R I P John "motzart" Martyn.

  • legend, a one off

  • Highly recommend his album titled "The Church With One Bell"

  • What a huge loss ! Wonderful voice really soulful. Saw him in Sweden in the late 80´s great concert in a small bar.

  • Thats a very young looking Ally Bain on fiddle lol

  • legend, all i can say really without ranting

I love solid air, one world, many more an underrated genius!!!

  • How am I just now discovering John Martyn? Absolutely love this, feel very fortunate to have stumbled upon his music recently.

  • man these translantic sessions are awesome..

i m going to try and get these on audio

  • this was one of the songs from my second wedding, and probably my second husband's favourite. I saw him in Camdentown around this time but never saw him do this song live. It is my fave, and I recommend all yall to score Dr. John's version of it as well. Thank you for posting. Love ya, Johnny, you were my kinda man. RIP. Caddy

  • shit... this is great.... i just found this and i love it

  • chachangue: You know what you're saying, brother.

  • John Martyn always strived to update rearrange his music as he felt that nothing was perfect and that music should evolve. He also thought that people would get bored if he just regurgitated the same old version out. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't. Somtimes it was just down to the fact that people were either used to or loved the original versions. Either way, he was a genius and like a lot of people will miss him and the songs he was yet to write. RIP, you glorious fool.

  • Attention dimwits. EVERYTHING about this is excellent. The fiddles are excellent. The bouzouki is excellent. The percussion is paricularly good. DT embodies excellence as does JM. So, for the avoidance of doubt, EVERYTHING about this particular rendition is excellent. Here's to JM, wha's like him? Gae few. And they're a' deid.

  • @chachangue Excellent points :)

  • is my first time that i hear this, and i like it, where i can dowload more of his songs.

  • Seems far too rushed for my liking...

  • then dont watch it..simples..

  • wicked version love it

  • This is AWESOME! I feel like I'm walking down Canal Street in New Orleans! LOL

  • i think this is messy. the fiddles are crowding it. cant get enough of his guitar in this track. which is probably why i dont like the fiddles

  • Hmm...I dunno, for me it's the Djembe that is the problem. Too loud, man. Too loud.

I like the fiddle and bass groove, it's cool

  • it is messy. and that's what makes it fucking fantastic.

this isn't Bach, dude. It's John Martyn.

  • well said...! can i give 5thumbs ups on that one..

    as you were...

    peace <3

  • good tune

  • Big John doesn't seem too happy with this one. Danny's glare seems to say "My fiddle is bigger than your fiddles, so pipe down!"

  • This was unusual, never heard him playing with strings. Great all the way. so long

  • RIP John Martyn:

I one day Barak Obama telling the American People "We don't want to know about evil, we only want to know about love"

  • pure enchantment

  • Johns music has been the soundtrack to my life since I was 17. Go down Easy Big Man. Missing you already...xx

  • I aint gonna study war no more, I should have listened to you sooner, Johhny, I don't wanna know about Evil. Only wanna know bout Love. Rest in Peace, sweet soul.

  • many a long journey home on the road at night, SOLID AIR all the way, thanks John, R.I.P.

  • Years ago I fled a bad situation, I drove 2000 miles in a triumph spitfire which had no tax, MOT, [roof!] or insurance to get away... I played Solid Air all the way, "Over The Hill" and it got me home. We all go through stuff, so did he, but if you think you've left a bigger epitaph forgive me Luvaduk, but I doubt it... RIP to one of the greatest singer-songwriters who influenced a generation. RIP John xxxx

  • I'm gonna miss my hero ....can't stop crying ....john was the biggest ,part of my music life ....love you john ....see you in the next life .....

    ..

  • Overall good and bad recordings/Gigs aside.....what a Fantastic addition to Music.I had the pleasure in 08 to see him in concert and although a big venue it was great.R.I.P John.

  • R.I.P. my hero .....!!!

    ..

  • I had him play Norwich early eighties and he blew everyone away, just John and keyboards, magic evening. And such a lovely man, no airs and graces like so many fall into, just a human being. Sorely missed, we need more like him.

  • Johns dead

  • You dont half post some crap russg84. factually you are all over the place.

  • I'm glad that you've factually proved me wrong luvaduk, I'm clearly just expressing my OPINION on this video and of John Martyn, which is the entire purpose of putting comments to videos on youtube. So unless you have something constructive to argue my opinion, there's not a lot in posting a comment like that, I'd expect it from a 12 yr old. The only fact I made a mistake on was the loss of his leg, but thanks for spotting it and telling me I post crap, your the best! (R.I.P John Martyn)

  • Who gives a fuck Luvaduck, just enjoy the music and piss off!

  • His early material (london conversation/bless the weather/storm bringer) in the 60s/70s was exceptionally good, soulful folk music. Amazing lyrics, minimal production and some great live perfomance came from that 10 year period. Unfortunately in the late 70s martyn divorced his wife beverly kutler and he hit self destruct, became an alcoholic, lost his leg in a car crash and made some TERRIBLE records, remastering a lot of his best work. He never really recovered unfortunately, tragic story

  • Dont agree-his leg wasnt lost due to a crash btway...I dont think many would agree he ever made a terrible record-but his music evolved in several ways-I prefer his 72-78 period myself but his mid 90s stuff onwards (plus Grace and Danger) are quite brilliant expositions of soul+jazz inspired work esp vocally. His live stuff is awesome even now. A tortured soul, yes, the UKs 'answer' to Brian Wilson in those 'too much life' ways.

  • well its down to preference,he certainly did some interesting stuff in the 70s/80s,but I didn't feel it was necessary to re-record all of his earlier songs with too much production and changing his vocals completely.I bought the remasters album and thought it was god awful.I understand that there are a lot of die hard martyn fans out there, but your in denial to think his later live performances are as good as the likes of spencer the rover from the '77 bbc sessions for example

  • Absolutely agree Russ. The re-recorded stuff sounds too cluttered and busy and has lost the soul that was there in the original work. I think he only lost one leg though, and it was due to health problems (such as alcohol abuse) rather than an accident but I could be wrong. >:0)

  • Certainly agree with the comment about Grace & Danger. Sublime stuff. >:0)

  • Lovely, but but still far prefer the original. More soulful.

  • this is an exceptionally good version of this song, violins sound beautiful and this was just before John lost his voice completely. Brilliant stuff.

  • He's lost his voice? Really? Why so because?

  • Blow me

  • great song! nice to see Donal Lunny in there too. some serious soul music.

  • Pure joy!

  • Jon Nickoll's "Goodbye Sanity" is better than this

  • please

  • I've checked Jon Nickoll's "Goodbye Sanity" out but I don't agree with you, it's not even close. I dont kwow why you even compare them. really...

  • Is that not obvious, so that you would check out Jon Nickoll's Goodbye Sanity of course

  • Yeah, that was obvious. But I expected a song that would be in the same "feel" or atmosphere or any similarity whatsoever. But maybe I gave you to much credit and you were just spamming. Good luck with your music anyway.

  • saw him at The Sage last year too. but i thought he was really bad, was a real shame. Really like his music, and he used to be legendary, but he's past it now. his support act John Smith was really good though, you's should check him out on youtube

  • how can you say that about my boy john. deffo issues but who hasn't. the man is in front of you, and you critise...Shush. you are able to take it

  • Legend!

Thanks to youtube I get to watch these kind of classical performances!

I'm 23 and seen John in Newcastle/Gateshead last year, although in A wheel chair and a bit past it, he played the guatiar better than anyone i've ever seen and could still nock out a good tune!

  • omg, first I heard this and Him,I went into one mad scat session(....ummm ,,,I have no clue how to scat,it just came outta know where) Man moves me large. Thank the heavens for youtube.

  • What a fabulous string arrangement - celtic feel at times, blending with 'nervy', 'brooding' jazz...classic Martyn. Thanks for the music, John. Thanks for the vid mnemonyx.

  • The voice, the lyrics, the sentiment and the heart...God bless JM

  • Great song, and great album; more influential than people give it credit for... Much of Paul Weller's solo work certainly doffs its cap to Solid Air.

  • Absolutely love John Martyn's music!

  • Donal Lunny as well. Deadly!

  • number one thats all im saying 10/10 and a 1000 stars

  • i am jms greatest fan ever in the history of ever and to make it more spooky, my best mate looks like danny thompson

  • I find it funny that the double bass guy never seems to age in comparison to John ...

  • the man's a LEGEND

  • my fave john martyn!

  • a bigger than life.incredible...M.T

  • star quality

  • Apart from the fact that John Martyn is seriously good we also have on this one the greatest of all Irish musicians. The one and only Donal Lunny.

  • nice strings , i`ve heard, seen, drank & smoked with john once or twice and thought its a shame hes not so cheerful these days....the voice is superb tho, the djembe? goes right back to the acoustic days...a real pleasure to hear i hoped they were going to run into another track there there was a bit of a groove going.

  • Really dont like knocking stuff but this is awful. I have utmost respect for all the musicians appearing here but ...oh dear it looks like one of those awful gatherings outside of tents at festivals, when you really need sleep....JMs uuuuumm at the very end says it all really.

  • is that where u keep your sheep

  • This works so well!! alternate brilliance.

  • That would be Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh from Altan. Shame about the bongos - the dumbest of all drums.

  • Appreciate the proper diacritics for Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh - blurb updated. I'd be willing to change the description of that goblet drum from a general "percussion" to something more authentic like تنبک or دربكة , but I definitely won't be changing it to "bongos".

Thanks for taking the time to comment.

  • sorry! prefer the album version!

  • Recent relistens have reminded me of the subtle charms of the Solid Air original, but preference is a close-run thing. Guess I think this alternative take on it has a little more to say to our modern messed-up world.

  • you could be right there! i just miss the fender rhodes that all!

  • wicked version which obviousy works!

  • Don't tell me!

  • ha ha, class. Watch his face at the end of the clip! Usually such a mellow mellow song, whatever they were doing here got a angsty classical thing going on, made me think of something from King Lear! Thanks for this post

  • That's what's her name from Altan behind him, superb fiddle player

  • And Lunny, wow!

  • one of my fav tracks by john martyn - from solid air i think!

  • faved this, its one of the best ever, blew me a way then as it does know

  • Hahaha mart, I'd say it's more John's "eeerm" right at the end :}

  • Oh no. I've got the background on this one from a mate who was there.

JM was halfcut and Danny had a right go at Aly Bain and company for overplaying after this was recorded. He had to apologise apparently....

  • God, john looks dead cool on this!he was a superd performer when he was off the drink.

  • Thanks for posting this clip - heard it on JMs homepage a couple of years ago, an amazing piece of music!!

  • The look that Danny gives at 3.10 says it all regarding the "Backing Band".

  • nice variation on original version...thanks for posting!

    the word of gord

  • that is a beautiful piece of music

  • This is beautiful, its a pity that Ali Bain and co are'nt up to the job that John and Danny are doing.

  • not too sure about this version..i feel that the organ/keyboard/whatever it is in the LP version is what makes this song magic

  • Ah Bazouki...thanks for that!

  • is that Donal Lunny on Cittern?

  • It's Donal Lunny on bouzouki, which I assume is close enough. Full musician credits for every TS item I've posted are in the video descriptions. That inconspicuous "more" link is starting to irk (no slight intended, except toward YooToob)

  • Merci again!!

  • This was great. Cheers.

  • too much people doing music for me..

  • This is really great! Very different from the Solid Air version.

  • Fantastic Thanks !!! :D.

  • Thank you , for this one more : ) very special fiddles + bass part !!! beautiful.
