GREAT Help thanks! I just created this page to help ALL E39 owners...I'm gonna upload any footage i have on my 528i and list a bunch of favorites to help all of us fix our cars by aquiring the knowledge to do it ourselves. I'm starting with your brakes video....thanks again!
By the way, you can also add "E36" in the title because with my 1996 318i the procedure is exactly identical. I will have to continue the procedure on Monday because I didn't have the 7mm allen key. All 3 standard sets I have only have 2,3,4,5,6 and 8 :-( ..
Excuseme for the lot of questions... I have one more dubt: what is appropriate syntetic engine oil? I found some recomendations for Castrol GTX 3, and some other 5 w40, 0 w30, 0 w40.
@gui10bjp the oil castrol gtx3 is awesome. As far as the oil wight goes that all depends on your climate. I live in western ct usa. so during the summer i fo with a heavier weight oil like 10 w 40. then in the winter i use 5w30. the colder climates require a thinner blend and lighter weight to compensate for the colder weather making the oil artificially thicker. The reverse is also true for the summer
I found some brands of pads and rotors in eBay. Do you suggest a specifit brand? Have big difference between genuine BMW and another maker? What is best pads: ceramic or metallic?
@gui10bjp I would recommend shopping at bavarian auto sport for your pads. they sell you pads specific for the model bmw you enter. any of those brands are great and OEM quality or better, I use MIntek myself. Ceramic is a bit of an over kill for normal use but I ur into racing you can't do any better. Metallic is great for everyday driving. be mindful the full metallics will give you more break dust than partial metallic. full metallic lasts longer but erodes your rotors faster. good luck
I am from Brazil and here is very difficult to find tools. Please, can you let me to know the names of tools you use, for me to try purchase in eBay? And break pads are special brand/model? I have a BMW 540i 1998/99. I need again front breake sensors.
I only used one hydraulic jack alternating for each side that I worked on. I placed it in the jack rest underneath each front door. Just use something like a 2x6 to rest on top of the jack to give it more surface area and stability.

If you would have put the clamp the caliper and depressed the piston while it was stillattached, the caliper would come off super easily.

@gui10bjp: the tools I used were: a wrench, long tip pliers to get the
rubber boots off the bolts on the back of the calipers. A G clamp to
compress the brake pad pistons, the standard BMW lug nut removal tool,
a 8mm Torx wrench to remove the 8mm hex bolts on the calipers under
the rubber boots. And some brake cleaner just go remove any excess
dust on the calipers and any moving parts along those lines. Have fun
with this job. If you do all for corners yourself that's about
$500-600 saved.

Nice video. Did you use a hydraulic jack on both sides of the car? I didnt see a jack stand, did you use one to support the car?
