  • Every version out there is great. Which one is better is not something that can be decided by one person. We each have our own favorites, for our own reasons (whether its the whistle, or power, dynamics or look). We should just enjoy every version that exists our there and recognize that each singer is fantastic in their own way and each one contributes something unique to their rendition of the piece. Great job Michael Ball

  • Steve Balsamo's rendition was so much better, with the rock and whistle register! I cried every time!

  • my favourite version of the song, thank you

  • For some reason you can not sing this song in a suit. The vocal performance is great, but this isn't a song like others. It is something more...

  • Отлично!!!!!!!!!!! Супер!!!!!!!!!!

  • Micheal Ball could sing articles from the South Wales Echo and it would sound great!!

  • Only Micheal Ball has the voice for this song and POWER. Ted Neely yes he is fantastic and looks the part but Micheal Balls voice just makes the song, Steve Balsamo couldnt carry it off. But u r right dvddmc no one will match Ted Neely

  • No one will ever Match Ted Neely !!!!

  • I like Michael Ball alot but him singing this song....not so much. For me Steve Balsamo is unsurpassed! Everyone else just sounds like a karaoke singer but we all have our favorites!

  • He's okay. I'm better, though.

  • none of the artists are as great as STEVE BALSAMO-he is pitch perfect -just amazing-it will bring a tear to your eyes evertime you hear it-listen and see for yourselves !

  • I am speechless every single time I hear him sing. Still my favorite male singer.

  • Sorry but Michael CRAWFORD sings this song better than anyone else. Michael CRAWFORD's emotion in his voice, movements, and facial expressions are unsurpassable. This version was blah... OK. But when I hear Michael CRAWFORD sing it I cry.

  • thank the lord for michael ball, who has now made this song acceptable to sing without having to have a crazy falsetto range! what a performance..goosebumps every time :)

  • uh - actually - IMHO - Michael CRAWFORD is the true master of this song. 'nuff said

  • @writerfan I completely agree! No one could sing this song like Michael CRAWFORD! Michael C's emotion through his movements, voice, and facial expression are unsurpassable. This guy overdoes it. He kind of makes it seem fake. Michael CRAWFORD is the best of all time. There you go. Simply put.

  • I love this man with all my heart. No matter who sings this song, it gives me goosebumps, but Michael Ball gives me goosebumps and makes me cry. He's awesome.

  • Ted Neeley up! this mtfkr down!

    :)

  • Michael Ball owns this song.

  • that was fucking incredible. i cant say anything more.

  • Gosh. There are so many differnt versions of this song. Hard for me to choose. =[

  • Steve Balsamo performs it best--period!

  • Good at putting on the tears

  • @emma473 Yes he does a GREAT VERSION - but having se M Ball sing this several times live....he just has the edge for me!!

  • @TowedHaulProductions totaly agree mur power real emotion

  • @emma473 goto agree emma,i saw steve singing it last yr in dublin and i cried all the way through the show-it was full of so much emotion-just amazing !

  • 3:39, awaiting applause... no... :(

  • well, u dont applause to ruin the gold if silence.

  • @thephantom3194

They knew he weasn't done yet :)

  • I love Michael Balls with a passion, but he does a waaaaaay better verson of this song in his Albert Hall COncert......end of act one I think - Prepare ye into Gethsemane...,.AhMAZING!!!

  • i love michael ball!

  • Plain version. I have to agree. If you have a note in your voice for "WHY?!!", you know, the one written in the score, as a singer you have to get it out. If you can't hit the note then don't bother doing the song. It's a rock opera. I think it's best when that note (and a few others) are blasted out, screamed with power. For the record I don't much like some versions where the note is squeaked out with a girlish falsetto sound to it. (Glenn Carter?). Ian Gillan rocked it like it should be.

  • Ok. Where are the high notes? I'm not very impressed. I guess its because I've heard the guy who sings it in the 2000 version and I like him SOOOOO much better! Now his high notes are incredible. :)

  • briel1023 i agree, i wanted to hear incredibly high falsetto notes, maybe he cant pull it off...

    prove me wrong michael

  • @briel1023 Screeching....Mike Ball ROCKED it. Most men do this song soooo wrong.

  • what is the right way to do it?

  • bad!!!he is not jesus in this moment...........steve and niko beridze is grat

  • Michael Ball is very likely my favorite male vocalist...it doesn't seem to matter what they give him...he can do it all.

  • This man's voice is AWESOME! Powerful, version of this song which I am certain not easy to sing. Great Performance!

  • ké pena k pienses eso... andrew lloyd webber no stá d acuerdo cn eso,me da e? =)

  • Ian Gillan, Steve Balsamo, Camilo Sesto y Nelly.

lejos los mejores, este no le llega ni a los talones

  • Gillan, Nelly and Balsamo. Nothing more, for me.

  • I like this version better than Neely's. I like the deeper voice on this song.

  • *of this excellent song*

  • No High note = Boring and unworthy of singing the song. Sorry. Standards, people.

  • @tehvodnik: Ya, forget for the moment that the highest note in the piece is actually a G# above middle C... Everything else is interpolated and NOT written in the original piece. I REALLY don't like the Metal influence some people put on this piece, it's not talent, it's just a really good way to kill your voice

  • The whole point most people look for in the song is the high note singing "why?". The incredible passion of the question. You can scream and moan that it's "not talent", and it may not be on a technical level, but it moves people regardless. That's all.

  • @tehvodnik: Doesn't mean he isn't good. I have no objections to Balsamo's or Ball's version. Michael just sings it in the more "classical" way. Nothing wrong with that. I love Balsamo's version too.

  • I really like this version of the song.

  • he is very passionate! what a voice! x

  • Oh, god, goosebumps anyone. This man is fantastic, Ted Neely is unmatchable but I love this one.

  • Incredible!

  • Ted Neely is first and foremost, but Michael definitely delivers!.

  • oh dear where is that note! That note which sends chills through a teenager. That note which lives to this day. I guess that note is down tBalsamo.

  • Michael Ball is good, but Steve Balsamo is one and only!

  • Steve Balsamo was probably the worst Jesus in a major professional production.

  • can you show me one of these videos? I only saw the one where he was really beastly on a huge stage.

  • Are you kidding me?

Balsamo bring so much passion, love, anger, and depth into this revelation, that it brings tears to many. Neely, Gillian, Balsamo, Sarich, Ball, Carter....they all bring something new, and amazing to each rendition, so before you make any assumptions, watch the others, and you'll see how good they ALL are

  • beautiful! I know Him

  • Michael has a good voice, but I still think that Steve Balsamo has a more sexier voice, and that last part where he screams in this song, is so much powerful.

  • Ball has a great voice, but BALSAMO, STEVE is a legend.

  • Watch also LAWRENCE GRAY singing "Gethsemane" and "You Are My Lover"...I really love his amazing voice...I hope you will too!!!

  • im torn between ted and steve balsamo

this guy has a much different style which is good and he does a very good job but ted and steve are hard to top

  • he's interpretation is good and very well singed... beautiful and powerful voice! it is his own style.. But I think that this song needs to be more acted.. in this particular song the singer must be more involved in the role and "less singer"... my opinion

  • yay subtlety.

  • better than glen carter but i still prefer balsamo and sarich

  • Hey, this guy looks so familiar? Was he ever in Les Miserable?

  • Yes, he was Marius.

  • hey, thanks a lot! Good singer!

  • i dont know but i like les miserable 2 lol

  • Amazing i so love his voice so strong and powerful please tour again xxx

  • Stunning! Nothing else I can say about this performance.

  • Ted Neely is the better interpretation imo. This guy is really early compared to the original cast (rushes lines and waits) rather than Neely who is late (delays and then rushes to get it in).

  • Ew, the audio on this is tinny and high pitched.

That said, I do like Michael's version the best, for the simple fact of emotion.

  • My favorite has to be Colm Wilkinson's version, but there's something very powerful about this interpretation. Its a different take...frustration and anger vs. the typical sadness and fear, I think.

  • colm wilkinson and ted neeley are the two best versions in my opinion.........the jcs2000version was far too clean cut ...lacking the soul of neeley or wilkinson

  • i love the way he performs this song! From the moment he holds the microphone, until the very last note, it's just excellent. With just his interpretation without all the costumes or all other production, i fee like i'm watching the real thing.

  • the picture in this movie of the "nail me to your cross and break me" is so amazing.

  • I think he does a great job. So does Glenn Carter who was Jesus in the 2000 JCS. Such a difficult song.

  • Good lord people. It is not falsetto that the high notes are usually sung in this song. It is a different area of the voice. It is more closely related to the female head voice.

  • The man is a genius. Steve Balsamo is excellent as well, but Micheal Ball gives me chills from the first note.

  • It's not about a falsetto, for' Christ's sake (literally); it's about vocal power, emotional empathy, and technical finesse. Thus, Michael Ball's version is the most touching of those available on youtube.

  • I disagree. it's a fine voice, but all wrong for the song.

  • It's very good. But my gosh, not nearly the best there is. All Broadway and no rock.

I won't disagree with vocal power though. He's definitely got umf.

  • I don't understand why people think this is great. This is good at best. His voice is good at best. I don't think this song brings out the best in his voice. Check out Steve Balsamo, or Ted Neely, or some of the non-professional people that have covered this song on youtube.

  • he`s a gifted singer. i like colm wilkinson`s version better though. ball impressed me, wilkinson blew me away

  • he's the one that made me love this song~<3

  • besides, this version was just for the concert performance. i think in the actual show, the falsetto has more of a place. for this concert though... it suited the purpose very very well.

  • Awesome.

  • he's good. but i love the song with the falsetto, it gives sense to the musical being a rock opera

  • I have a theory: When the song is good, no matter the version you do of it it sounds great, and I consider this one a masterpiece. Can you imagine a good version of any of the Bisbal songs?Hahahahaha

  • i just think that both versions - falsetto and none - work. they're just different. but both have their own appeal and brilliant luster.

i love both. i don't see why one has to be better! ball and neeley are both incredibly talented, as are many others who sing this song too.

  • no no...ted neeley is the best...STOP

  • i disagree with those who say he should'nt sing gethsemane. If you hear him sing this live it doesn't matter that he doesnt falsetto it. This is a completely different way of singing it, instead of cutting through you and making you go "wow" as the falsetto/scream does, his voice hits you in the chest and leaves you wondering how the building is still standing. That said, i prefer balsamo's version. Check out colm wilkinson btw, he doesn't use falsetto in his version.

  • Good singer..

    Not for this song....

  • As a trained singer I can tell you that usually only people that can not reach a higher note, have to rely on falsetto to reach the note. A naturally gifted singer, as good as Michael Ball, can reach the higher notes without the unnatural falsetto. Michael Ball is a truly wonderful, gifted singer.

  • Michael Ball is actually a much better singer than Ted Neely, but Ted does this song so well, doesn't he ? Michael Ball can sing for me anytime.

  • thas what i meant sorry...is'nt ted an actor anyway not a pro singer

  • Love this song I've seen better performence's but Michael Ball still has it.

  • OH MY GOD!!! how can you say that carly3592? the falsetto gives this song it's character and the fact michael ball did'nt even attempt it shows that he's not all he's cracked up to be

  • Why did he even sing this? Just not right for his voice. On the falsetto, baritones generally have a pretty good one, but he may run out of notes in his before the G. I'm tenor and my falsetto doesn't really get any good till about a high C (which I can also full voice), and really kicks in at an E or F. Pretty piercing, though!

  • I actually like this song better without the falsetto. This performance is amazing!!!

  • i love you

  • why I should die!!!!

    I have to see MYGOD~!

MG~! this song is fited for Micheal.

    his live is prefect~ ~

    也许这里没人看得懂中文吧,但我只是想用自己的母语表达下我的感情。 完美~! 完美~!每次看到这段是激动得要死~

  • Surely a good performance, and Mike has a beautiful and warm voice, but this song became a legend also thanks to the wild scream Ted Neeley was able to put in it, so I feel the performance as incomplete.

Well, I am a Ted Neeley fan. Any doubt?

  • No one does this song better than Michael Ball! Everytime I hear it, it gives me shivers

  • It's true that he doesn't do the falsetto but I think people shouldn't drop this version just because of that. This man has a very good voice quality and puts a true emotion into the song that makes up for it.

  • realy good voice

he doesn't do the falseto, but i realy didn't miss it on his perform. very good

  • I am a HUGE Ted Neeley fan. But this is something entirely different. And it's hauntingly beautiful.

  • Sincerely...a good voice but really far, far behind other covers of this great song. Try to listen to John Farnham, Ian Gillan, Ted Neely etc.

  • This man has a voice that gives me shivers, love him.

  • Great voice and soooo fit....xxx

  • wow this song made me shiver and the end of it Andrew Lloyd Webber is a genius

  • Absolutely the best version of Gethsemene! Michael can delivers this song with vocal perfection and emotion. Loved how he sustains that last note!!!

  • what a fantastic version of this song AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!

  • He's amazing!

  • The best recording of this song ever!

  • i like Colm Wilkinson s version better but this one is very good ;)

  • i love this song!!

  • one great singer... i admire him so much.
