This song is total power, I'm in my late 20's and I wish BC would have been one of the great bands I grew up with, but here in the States all we got really was In a Big Country, which is a glorious song that I've always loved, but it wasn't until recently that I caught that video on TV and realized I should dig deeper because I don't know of anything else they've done...so grateful for Youtube.
It may sound stupid, but especially the intro fits just perfect in time and place. Such a great atmosphere. Those pictures of the old days are making me sad somehow. ;)
I was a freshman in college when The Crossing came out. I was totally stunned--I never heard anything like that before. I think Steeltown remains my favorite CD of theirs. The two Steve Lilywhite produced albums of theirs is just simply amazing.
These guys are so on top of their game, consummate musicians, totally at ease with trully wonderful, relentlessly stirring songs and tunes. Pukka!!!!!!!!!!
When I was 17 and heard Steeltown on the radio, I was shocked. After The Crossing, I could not imagine greater depth. I was wrong. Girl with Grey Eyes, Just a Shadow. This album changed my life completely in the span of 1 week.
I cry for Stuart every day. When he left us I thougtht it was my fault, I should have reached out. He did so much for me and I did nothing for him.
I had to watch again--it had been a while and it seemed that our thankless camera man was spending more time on the keyboard guy than on Butler. (I guess I was just looking for an excuse to get my feelings hurt, lol)
Yeh ... you are right ! I met him too (in Milan after '90 concert): I remember Him talking 20 min to everybody, praying Security and Manager to wait and finally asking everybody (20/25 person) to follow and go have a beer together; friend after 2 minutes !!! Great person !!!
Thanks for the upload. It's odd, I grew up listening to Big Country from a very early age and it was the only real music that truly moved me. I still love them to this day, they are sorely missed as is the dearl departed Stuart- a true musical genius.
been to c bc a couple time in notts..had the pleasure of going backstage at rock city n having couple beers with the band...awesome band.. great live..sadly missed..
Kevse I know there are sooo many bc fans here in the US Iam just one of them ;-) Thanks for a super vid any luck we can chat possibly e mail and I will buy any copies and or original concert performances ??
1 of the 80s true band, and to this day still one of my favs As I stated in a lot of comments they are a remarkable band I still listen to them and try to pick up CDs and live performances from them I am proud to have a autograph poster of the band when they toured in a local college and even a contract from what the band liked and wanted to have at their disposal I have the many tickets too it was like 2.00 for college students Great vid awsome album steeltown is
The thing about Stuart ( apart from being my all time idol) is that he puts such passion in to his lyrics. Look at his face when he say "there is no miracle in ruin", he truely means it. The little riff at the beginning is amazing also.
This album Steeltown was brillient, mind you they all were. Stuart you were never recognised for how brillient you really were. I only wish I still had my Concert T-shirt fom the steeltown tour, sleeveless, grey in colour does anyone have one? It was only 21 years ago. "400 hundred miles, of fields of fire"
Thanks so much for posting that. As I have said in many other posts on YT. This is the best guitar band of all time, in my opinion. The amazing innovation were is using the guitar to make the sounds of industry/assembly line at the beginning--a song that was written when the early 1980s policies of Thatcher and Reagan were destroying the dream of the everyday steelworker. So under appreciated.
Know it sounds cheesy, but this song really means a lot to me. One of my favorite tunes EVER. Hadn't heard it in a while, and once I booted up this video, I almost started crying at my freaking desk LOL
Stuart was brilliant, all of those guys are. He did a lot of creative guitar work at this concert. My favorite version of this song is on Without the Aid of a Safety Net, far more hard edged than this version.
you are right about that version on without the aid of a safety net 100% thats the best version i've ever heard. I tried to put it on here but couldn't find it. have you seen it already?
does anyone know the name of keyboard player?

Met Stuart a few times at the Carnegie centre Gym in Dunfermline in the early 90's. Great guy had time for everyone, didn't have a superstar ego.
