@depfox I meant adoption. Yeah, back in 2008 I was trying to find a good family to openly adopt my son to and while I was pregnant I could not find a family that I liked who would also agree to an open adoption. I wanted to be able to see the kid as a "family friend" or something occasionally (like visit on a holiday or birthday) I was fine if they didn't want to tell the kid he was adopted. With this video diary, I would have asked you guys, but we ended up keeping him and it worked out.
@depfox The problem wasn't that i wasn't ready to be a mother. I had a daughter and she was only 10 months old when I got pregnant with him. I wasn't married, things were rocky with the father, and I had never planned on having more than one biological child. I wanted to get fixed after my first and adopt later, but they won't let you get fixed until you're over 25. I knew with two young children things would be really hard and i wanted to be fair to the little guy and to my daughter and give...
@depfox ...them families that had plenty of time for them. Plus I had severe post partum depression after each kid and it's not cool at all. I'm completely against abortion and I love babies so much so he was going to be born either way so after I couldn't find a family who was okay with an open adoption we decided to keep him and got married a month after he was born and our first year of marriage was pure hell because we were not in love and the father was constantly trying to run away, but...
@depfox ....things got better after the first yr. My husband grew up & settled in. We started to really love each other. Best of all, he's older than me & after a 2 hr chewing out of a doc, they allowed my husband to get fixed. Our 3rd anniv is this month & we are looking forward to getting old together. We don't want another infant EVER. I love babies, but they are too much for me, toddlers are much more my style. I would want to adopt out any future baby if one happened to pop up.
@depfox I'm happy we kept him, but everything I feared pretty much happened. lol. I've wanted to be a surrogate for years, as long as it's not my eggs getting used ;), but my state isn't surrogate friendly ;n;
God bless u guys! See being so loyal to adopted children while there are people who have their own Biological children and NEVER Give a Shit about them. So Strange God gives these cruel Streight Monsters Children but you POOR Gays NONETHING! My own father should NOT be allowed to Multiply himself than u 2 guys.
It's sad that most of the times when gay people want to adopt..They end up adopting Asian or Black cause that's what 's really available most of the times for adoption..While you can adopt children from Europe ..specially if you are white.. but I can imagine why that is a lot more complicated....
Homosexuals commit more than 33% of all reported child molestations in the United States, which, assuming homosexuals make up 2% of the population, means that 1 in 20 homosexuals is a child molestor, while 1 in 490 heterosexuals is a child molestor
You guys have an awesome family, BUT... it feels like you give alot more attention to selina, rather then to give it to both of your wonderful kids! So please give more attention to daniel! Thanks :)
Your family has inspired me and my partner to look into possibly having a family of our own. But there are so many hurdles to jump over first, its quiet daunting. I would give up anything and everything to have a family like yours. .
I'm glad you guys are still doing the ask a gay family video series. It's gonna help and inspire a lot of people. As a gay male in my 20's I'd love to have a kid one day when im more financially stable. But I guess it would also help if I actually found a guy to be with first. I think i'm always single cause i wanna be in a relationship. Either that or there's not many gay guys around here. I guess no matter hard the wait is I have to be patient and keep my hopes and dreams alive.
I think adoption vs surrogacy within a homosexual couple should be treated just as it would with a heterosexual couple in which one member could not conceive children for whichever reason: Its up to the couple, but by adopting you're helping the world a little bit.
Another sweet video ;) Thanks for all you effort guys. I love how you guys interact so comfortably in front of the camera, including Daniel and Selena. And I also love that Jay calls Bryan "Handsome" (cause he really is ;) and your kiss was sweet too :D
My uncle is gay and had a civil partnership, but my uncles both say they'd never adopt because they're too selfish within their relationship and with their time, money and material objects etc.. did you have problems with these things when you first adopted?
@FatalMindedMe Having kids is a lot of work you have to be willing to give up a lot of personal things for the betterment of your kids.....With all that you give up you get a million moments of love its not a fair trade the kids give us more then we could ever get from them or a life without kids. Your uncle doesnt know what he is missing :O)
@depfox Mr. Duncan Home Alone 2: Children can give a lot to people who pay enjoy them (I think it's paraphrasing it) and CS Lewis: Many important things I've learned in life, I learned from children
I don't really have a 'family' question but more a video question. I love all your videos but the intro music is way loud so I have to turn down the volume and then turn it back up again when you start to talk because it is way low. Would it be possible to adjust the volume on the intro clip when editing your videos? Sorry if i am being too nit picky but I have thought it quite a while every time I watched one of your videos. :)
Wow 10 000! That´s amazing:) Congratulation! I think I have followed you here for a year now and your videos always make me glad. Great to see a ask a gay family video again...it´s been a while. I must say your children are so sweet. They show so much love :) I wish you all a Happy New Year. And a little question. How are things with your documentary?
Just my opinion but I think you have the perfect family now, but I do think emergency adoption is a great idea for kids in need, and you just might find another kid you would love to bring into your great family.
I know where you could find a great really old kid for your family...LOL
I don't see myself having my own child simply because I just don't want kids. But I think adoption is best because you aren't bringing another child into the world. There are just too many kids out there without familys.
Lovely family and wonderful channel! I'm originally from California and was so ashamed when all the Prop 8 business went down. Keep it up and I'll be watching! xoxo ;-)
My, how you've grown. :-) I don't remember how many subs you had when I found you (THANKS Michael- tattooskin72!) but it's been my pleasure watching you for well over a year now.
One of my family's closest friends fostered troubled teens for nearly 40 years. It wasn't always wine and roses but they have often said that next to raising their own family, it was the most wonderful experience in their lives.
Great video, very open and honest. Its awesome that you are considering being emergency foster parents. By the way, there is no such thing as a brave homophobe.
BTW congrats on the 10000 mark!! Jay and Bryan that is a great way to look at things. We are seriously looking into adoption and this will definitely help us in our decisions. I am glad you decided on Adoption. I have your page on my favorites and will definitely to y'all for support in this situation. Y'all are such a perfect little family!! I love it! I told Andre we feel like the "Rosanne" version of y'all!! Love you guys!!
I think whenever I decide to have kids, which will not be for while :) , id choose adoption. There are many kids who need loving homes out there and not enough parents who want to adopt them.
I think surrogacy is a bit difficult morally. Aside form the conflicts that you mentioned, both of you wanted kids, so how would you split the parenting? The surrogate mother has to be strong, because the mother will automatically get attached to that child, and letting them go must be extremely difficult.
Even if I wanted kids and even if I ended up with someone of the opposite sex (I'm bi/pan, so it could really go either way) I'd still rather adopt than have my own kids. There's so much more to passing down a bit of yourself than just your genes.
I think you guys are amazing! It's great that you want to send a message to the world and that it's heard because you hit a 10.000 subscribers! I hope lots of other people will hear from you, and that they will spread the message even further :)
I had a dream about you guys last night, especially with you Jay. You guys had a dopted me (lol I'm 22). The truth of the matter is, I woke up this morning and cried because it was just a dream. I wish I had a great father like you or Bryan, instead of getting a homophobic father like I have. My mom and me have gotten closer where as at first when I came out to her she wasn't really accepting, but now she is and I'm happy. but I wish I had a boyfriend and adopted kids of my own. I feel so lonely
I love to see this family. It is such a loving Gay family and it warms my heart to see you all. I lived in a country where I was treated badly because I am gay, and I would love to have 3 kids with a husband that I really and truly love.
Who doesn't enjoy watching you guys do your videos? Those homophobes are too scared but it would be insightful to see... And I remember how embarrassed Bryan was in AAGF9 =D
Thanks for the fireside chat depfox! It really warms my heart whenever I see a new video of yours in my subscription box. Merry Christmas and have a happy new year!
I can't believe you guys answered my question! Hahahaha. That's awesome. Thank you so much. Honestly, I skipped through my video, I just got all embarrassed watching it but thanks! You guys have a beautiful family!
I wish ppl that really wana know and learn that dislike the idea of gay parents have the time and be brave to video in their questions for them to answer. thanks for sharing and congrats on a job well done.
have you guys ever done a vodeo on what is is like as a gay couple dropping your kids off for a first day of school? i know that the new school year is fast approaching if your out of vid ideas :)
Great video! LOL at Daniel's face when you mentioned "the bedroom"!
I think it's great that you are considering emergency foster care. Are there limitations that you can place, such as on age? I guess I'm a bit leery of having teens in the house when both my kids are under the age of 3. Also, we both work, so that would not be an ideal situation, right?
Haha Bryan cracks me up at the end and in video #9. I'm kind of like him. I'm pretty private about some certain topics like sex or whatever else. My BF, on the other hand, could just spill our business to anyone who would listen. My friends are all the same way. They could all just talk about it and I'm like...hell no...that's private! Haha.
I was going to say it last video, despite Daniel not having your DNA and being a different race too, he *looks* and *acts* like you guys more and more after each video I see (especially Bryan with the similar haircuts lol). When I 1st bumped into your videos, I admit it was odd to not only see 2 gay fathers plus see you white guys with hispanic kids. Now it not only seems normal but *right* and a totally positive and envy-worthy thing
It's not just saying it to be sweet. Like Daniel and Selena *seem* like your kids biology or not! It's not even me like rationalizing it. Like in 1 of your xmas videos where Bryan was talking and he was doing his usual mannerisms, Daniel was hamming it up lol. But with him and Bryan both doing hand motions at the same time, it was a funny mirror moment situation and showed natural chemistry. That's just 1 of many examples of the ways your family just "flows" or "jives" together!
@u3q2v It's also amaaazing what they have done and built if you watched their other video on Daniel and Selena and all they have been through medically and their adoption experience. These fathers are model citizens.
Yes I've been blessed enough to have watched most if not all of the videos they've put up! I agree they're definitely model citizens as well as great role models in various capacities: as fathers, as gays, as people, etc. I've been inspired and learned so much from them already from civil rights/politics to lifestyle to options and on and on. Their family has given me so much just being their wonderful selves and I feel so lucky that they, internet, and YouTube are around!
I think it's likely I'm going to come out and try having my own family one day. I always wanted my kids to come from my DNA, but ever since seeing your videos I've re-thought my options and values. If I get that far, I may even try both surrogacy and adoption. Thanks for the education!
Congrats on 10,000 Subs!!! Adoption ROCKS.....I would recommend adoption to anyone. We may foster again, when we move...but it's so easy with two kids....one for each parent. But, then you think about all those kids that need someone :( who knows what we will do.
It bothers me when people say that someone is more their child because of biology. Your parent or parents are the ones who truely love and raise you :)
@FUNNYMONEYKID10 I agree it was weird how arogant some of the gay couples we have met that looked down on the fact that we had to adopt.....Like some how we just werent able to afford the other options.
@depfox I find this attitude totally astonishing. I can't imagine why anyone would look down on someone for having adopted -- for whatever reason. And for someone to think this is somehow a second-class child or family is even more astonishing. I assume you realize these people are not worth having in your life.
@FUNNYMONEYKID10 : I totally agree with you. There are too many 'parents' out there in name only because they have the ability to biologically reproduce. Being a real parent is totally different from being a biological parent. I have always known that I wasn't right to be a parent, but if I was and was in a committed relationship, I think I would rather choose adoption over surrogate parents. The dna doesn't matter to me...the love does.
I am straight, but I'm going to strongly consider adoption when I'm an adult, because even with others out there adopting there would still be a lot of kids out there without families and homes so it's definately something I would think about if I ever wanted to start a family when I'm older :)
Watched your ask a gay question #10. I wonder how the school system and other parents treat you as a couple and the children when you attend school functions?
I am a lesbian and if I was in the system I would like to be placed in a family like yours! Thank you so much for your videos! You are an inspiration to me!!

Anyway, have a great New Year's!

Haha.

Happy 10,000!!!! I was hoping you'd get there before 2011 :D

I think its wonderful that you guys are willing to do foster care, and ESPECIALLY for LGBT kids who in the system.
Great video, have a good New Years guys!!

Now it not only seems normal but *right* and a totally positive and envy-worthy thing
u3q2v 1 year ago 5
@u3q2v WOW thank you for the very sweet comment.
depfox 1 year ago
@depfox
That's just 1 of many examples of the ways your family just "flows" or "jives" together!
u3q2v 1 year ago
@u3q2v It's also amaaazing what they have done and built if you watched their other video on Daniel and Selena and all they have been through medically and their adoption experience. These fathers are model citizens.
XforeverlongingX 1 year ago 3
@XforeverlongingX

CONGRATS on 10,000!
I think it's likely I'm going to come out and try having my own family one day. I always wanted my kids to come from my DNA, but ever since seeing your videos I've re-thought my options and values. If I get that far, I may even try both surrogacy and adoption. Thanks for the education!
u3q2v 1 year ago
Congrats on 10,000 Subs!!! Adoption ROCKS.....I would recommend adoption to anyone. We may foster again, when we move...but it's so easy with two kids....one for each parent. But, then you think about all those kids that need someone :( who knows what we will do.

It bothers me when people say that someone is more their child because of biology. Your parent or parents are the ones who truely love and raise you :)
FUNNYMONEYKID10 1 year ago 21
@FUNNYMONEYKID10 I agree it was weird how arogant some of the gay couples we have met that looked down on the fact that we had to adopt.....Like some how we just werent able to afford the other options.
depfox 1 year ago
@depfox I find this attitude totally astonishing. I can't imagine why anyone would look down on someone for having adopted -- for whatever reason. And for someone to think this is somehow a second-class child or family is even more astonishing. I assume you realize these people are not worth having in your life.
kc55mo 1 year ago
@FUNNYMONEYKID10 : I totally agree with you. There are too many 'parents' out there in name only because they have the ability to biologically reproduce. Being a real parent is totally different from being a biological parent. I have always known that I wasn't right to be a parent, but if I was and was in a committed relationship, I think I would rather choose adoption over surrogate parents. The dna doesn't matter to me...the love does.
Comixbear1 1 year ago 2
@Comixbear1 Thanks :)
I am straight, but I'm going to strongly consider adoption when I'm an adult, because even with others out there adopting there would still be a lot of kids out there without families and homes so it's definately something I would think about if I ever wanted to start a family when I'm older :)
FUNNYMONEYKID10 1 year ago
do selena and daniel understand that you guys are gay and have an understanding of what being gay is, or do they just know that they have two dads?
i would do this in a video response but i dont have a camera :(
