Thanks alot for this video im sticking to my degree so i can apply for this im doing a 3 year Accounting and finance degree (Fact one of the worst degrees to do so hard)
I think this is for me i love japan i have always wanted to go my experience is limite dbeing only 19 coming on 20 i only have a small amount of classroom experience it was more like an afterschoolsession to help boost a childs confidence but i think from this i learnt i really enjoyed giving something back so thanks again
That's a broad question. You can teach here with credentials like that no problem. And you can be a total hack and teach here as well. You will most likely find a better company to work with with your background.
Ive done a lot of research on this because I'm moving to Tokyo in a few months and will most likely become a teacher. You pretty much need the 4 yr degree to get the visa.I don't have a BA but I'm coming on a spouse visa so hopefully it won't be to hard for me to find a job. Ive heard of some people just coming to japan on a 3 month visa and job searching and actually getting sponsored because of they impressed them in the interview.
Again I'm hearing both you MUST have a degree and others say you don't. I have yet to find an ESL program that didn't require one though. :(
Also I was also wondering many ESL programs ask for a BA/BS but specify a 3-4 year degree... again stupid question but... would they not accept a accelerated 2 year bachelors degree?
I get this question a lot. Here is my experience with that: If you are here and or you have a visa (such as a spouse visa or other visa)and the company does not need to provide you with one, aside from Jet, you may not need a degree but some experience and at least a TEFL or TESOL. Getting sponsored by a company for a visa usually requires a degree or some sort of equivalent trade in teaching or life experience and that is up to the perspective company.
I have heard of people coming here with only a holiday visa and then getting a company to change it for them and also they were so impressive to the company they never had to provide degree documents... wink wink but that's a bit risky. So I would say get at least some certification and communicate with a company before you get here and ask for sponsorship.
All companies have various degrees of requirements and the lower the requirements the more shady the company but if you are willing there may be an easy in at a company who simply needs bodies. That doesn't speak well for the ALT trade but its a fact and there are great Teachers without degrees here.
When you do finally get sponsorship you must work as a teacher you can not quit and then decide to be a cook. You have to change some paper work for that. A spouse visa like mine lets me do any job I want.
Well the hubby & discussed it & decided to play it safe. He's just applied for a grant & *fingers crossed* we'll get him a BS & then in few years move to Japan. We just want to avoid the shady companies for one & possibly allow ourselves more leeway. Perhaps we'd be lucky & get to choose what part of Japan (want Northern.) I HATE the long wait but it'll give us time to save money & learn a little Japanese.
I've read that if you do not have to have a college degree you can instead use 10 years of professional work experience in its place. Is this at all true? *fingers crossed*
Also I'm married and we're both interested in living in Japan .. would we BOTH have to have a college degree or just one? If only one would the other be allowed to work in Japan as a teacher or anything else?
Probably very stupid questions but I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask. ;)
I just want you living in Japan adventurers to know how we back home wish you the best in your daily life there. We take great interest in vicariously projecting ourselves into your world. My perspective is one of longing to return to my years in Tokyo where every turn was filled with strange awe, yet also difficulty. The Japanese experience has remained in my blood even decades after leaving. I thank you for reminding and educating us.
This Jet program you are talking about. How much does it cost and is it on a web site and how much would I have to pay, also what would I have too pay for?
It don't cost you anything and check the link in the info box.... I am winging it here not in Jet but If you want my friends e-mail send me a private message....
Very interesting vids. I'm hoping to come to Japan to travel and train in martial arts but I don't rule out the possibility of TEFLing. It's good that a degree isn't absolutely necessary anymore - I have a 3 year drama school diploma and a little experience of teaching drama to kids.
Thats sounds good....you may get some acting gigs here too...being a foriener is good for acting I got a day gig acting for 25000yen for one day and I am a total hack.
can you pick where you live?

You definately do still need a degree in order to do the Jet programme, at least in England

Cool good info! Jet is a clean operation... beware the shady supply companies but they are an easy way in at first.
