the 80's was about pleasin' the women. They were buying the records and the corporations marketed the packages and formulated the bands to their target market. Chick bands. If you're a guy don't admit to buying those hairbands, even the gays weren't buyin into that crap. Give me this any day.
Does anyone else freak out when they hear that little hi-hat/second guitar part come in after the electric part starts? Right before the singing. I swear I've rewound this song a hundred times just hear that damn part!
@Devildance1234 I know exactly what you mean! (It just takes me longer. lol) But I can never decide which I like better: the part you described or the way it's done on All The World's A Stage.
In the great catalouge of our beloved Rush, with such classics as Tom Sawyer, Limelight, Spirit of the Radio, 2112, Freewill and on and on, its always great to hear these little gems! What a great piece!
one of just a few guitar solos I can play (the second half, anyway). The other one is the second solo off Creeping Death, by Metallica. Otherwise I'm strictly rhythm, I don't make it cry or sing.
My thoughts are that RUSH were sent here for a reason. Honestly people the level of musicianship since circa 196?. I had the pleasure of seeing them in the old APOLLO in Glasgow, Scotland @1976/78 and they were in the Kamonos, LOL. Alex had a red one with a dragon design on it. I'm 49 years old and they are still firkin awesome. Cheers
If I had to choose one Rush song to play til the day I die, this would probably be it. Can still remember hearing it for the first time about 30 years ago and just standing there thinking "F*CK!" :) *der der.....derrrr....* Immense!
I agree with Pryce2112, Rush is underrated™. I have stated that three times on three different posts. But, DAMN, I love their tunes. I grew up right next door to Canada(Niagara Falls NY) and our rock station(97 Rock!), they have played their share of Rush, and we appreciate the music for sure!
I'm transported directly back to my formative years: you know, the ones that you don't realise at the time count most in making you who you are. Satisfaction may come in later years through family and children, but these are the years....
I love blaring this in a Budweiser warehouse..Its such a great tune..It picks everyone up and it sounds awesome...Geddy's voice and the slow moments kill people
@Holden8572 Hopefully they'll last forever like The Rolling Stones but I can tell that Geddy voice isn't quite the same as back in the 80's. Have you ever realized how Roger Daltrey voice is nowhere near the same as it was in the 60's during Tommy or The Who Sell Out.
@Skaternick911 Elton John's voice certainly isn't what it was back in the 70s. But I agree; RUSH is likely to last for years to come. I think I heard recently that they're going to release a new album soon. =)
@Holden8572 They could have easily said back when all that shit happened to Neil in the late 90's that they wanted to quit. Any other artist would never continue after that. RUSH is too epic to quit.
@Holden8572 Neil has said he wants to play until at least age 70 so unless one of them dies Rush will be around for a while...look at the Stones, theyre still kicking and Rush is in way better shape than them
@Gary2112 Dude they could come out and fart into mics and I'd still pay to see that as the final RUSH song ever played live. Though RUSH has more class than that. But then again they NEVER cease to amaze.....
@Gary2112 Dude they could come out and fart into mics and I'd still pay to see that as the final RUSH song ever played live. Though RUSH has more class than that. But then again they NEVER cease to amaze.....
@Skaternick911 That would be great but the Great Geddy was only 20 or 21 when he sang this and figure he'll be 94 when they stop playing shows, I don't think he'll hit the high notes :)
Great point~! People including myself have a tendency to think of Rush while listening to their songs and visualize them as being older I think. Suddenly thinking of them as little 21 years old's writing this stuff and playing like they do is very humbling.
@Skaternick911 though i love this song i think the last song of there last gig should be 2112 the full 20 minutes, maybe even jam a little and extend it to 30 minutes that would be epic
The first time I heard this song I was locked away in my new dorm first year university. I was young, lonely, and depressed. Because of this song and Rush I quit my degree in the second semester and pursued art school and travelling like I always wanted. Life's to short to not do what you want
Rush is like a fine Red Zinfandel, a relatively new wine in wine terms, but established amongst the many grape varieties. Rush goes well with all sorts of different situations, they're good on they're own (like a wine) they're good while traveling (like wine) they're good while driving (like wine, wait what? don't drink and drive!) You know what I mean though that these guys just get better with age and unlike wine you'll always have that timeless sound and taste of a great rock and roll band.
I could not agree more with the sentiments of lopergrad. Well put, indeed! Thx for postin'!!! Seen this band 4 times and every performance brought tears and laughter of joy.
@cakefu1 you are absolutely right!! GREAT SHOW!!! they guys still play very tight and geddy can still sing perfectly-lots of vids on here from the cleveland show-dvd is supposed to come out by the end of the year!
this is one of those tunes that you can remember exactly where and what you were doing when you first got turned on to it....to me thats just ....well you all know ......everyones got a tune like that.....its only rock and roll!!!!!!!!!!
I like the start and the end that sort of break off from one another for the center of the song. Sort of 2 towers on a spanned bridge. That being said, I used to fall asleep to this song back around 83 with my new Sony Walkman tape player if you can believe that. Or that one side of the album Hemispheres.
@lopergrad 'Vapor Trails' included in that at all? (Hah.) If so...another person waiting for the remasters to be released later this year or early next!
This song has encouraged me and my best friend of 11 years (who's just as big of a fan as me) to drive down to California after graduation, listening to nothing but Rush on the way there and back.
Is it weird to remember years ago as a 3 year to remember laying on the couch in the livingroom and my dad playing this album and always this song put me to sleep? It almost brings tears to my eyes, I was brought up with rush. I am 14 years old now.
I remember listening to Permanent Waves as a 9th grader and realizing immediately that I had stumbled upon something amazing. Going back and exploring every Rush album was an amazing experience for me. I've seen them 6 times now live. Don't tell me they are boring. They are craftsman, putting as much work into 2112 and Farewll to Kings as they do Clockwork Angel. Still a fan all these years later.
Loved Rush back in the day....Just wished tey had not of become slaves to the synthesizer. Rush, Fly By night, 2112, even caress of steel.......timeless albums.
@bsc1812 I don't know why most people hate the synthesizer, i think Rush kicks ass with it, but after Counterparts in 1993 there's a lot less of it. A good band from the early 70s to 2010.... not something you see every day.
I tend to agree with you. While comercially Moving Pictures was their best album in terms of sales, and yes, it was a great album, there were very few groups that could match an album like 2112 - off the top of my mind only Floyd, Zeppelin, The Who - that's pretty elite company ....
well, its 7:57 christmas morning.my body is here in 2010 but my mind is in a hot august morning in '82.i am wondering how i'm going to sneek my stoned ass in without wakin' the folks.Rush definately has a way of takin' ya back.
@moses1191 lol. 1984 Sneaking in all red eyed and the old man is sitting at the kitchen table. Busted!!. Took my car from me for a week. LOL what awesome years.
This song fuck,n ROCKS,it has been in my soul for 25 years, and still fits my life.Tryring to out rock the best Canadian band will be impossible for any band.Thats like trying to beat all Gretzkys records.Rock on Boys!!
For those who say that Rush of the 1990s and 2000s are just as good, well, you decide. I miss the old Rush. Lifeson using his Steel guitar on this song on "All the World's A Stage" absolutely classic.
And how was a song like this not picked up by radio stations at the time ?????????
It had everything, it was heavy and had great musicianship, yet was melodic, had emotion, and even a slight hook. Rush has been so grossly overlooked and treated unfairly by the mainstream.
Have to add for al, those wonderful people who wished me well and gave me their best wishes. Love to them all... vin helen marie fini macindurham pvidango tony1238 drummer ice..... anyway, you all know who you are Thanks to you all and I appreciate...well, if you arer the guys, you will know anyway, eh? xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
clintbronson5...those days are still fresh in San Antonio, at 5:45 a.m. ...as are other great Rush songs...in fact going to see Rush tonight at AT&T Center, 7:30 p.m. ...so there still burns a lot of rope here, especially during 'A Passage to Bangkok'!!!!!
and lessons, something for nothing, closer to the heart, spindrift. thats all i can think of off the top of my head for more songs that start with the acoustic.
there is a radio station here in western pa. called mega rock,105.5-they play these lost ''''''gems'''''''''----it only took one time of hearing this song and it's permanently on my mp3 now.......
@jinxedmodder nope-sucks too-you would like this station! at least 3 to 4 deep cuts off of albums an hour...i can only listen to tom sawyer so many times!!! dont get me wrong, i love rush, 2112 is my fave!
I bought Rushs' first album having no idea who or what they where loved it seconds after the sylus hit the vynl, and have been a rabid fan ever since ... I know they heled shape who i am and my hopes for mankind. Seen them live many many times and will say to any music fan if you can afford tickets to only one rock show these are the guys to go see!

@moses1191 What a comment! This album reminds me of the same thing. I can't listen to Rivendell without thinking of my wizard pipe.

Classic song.
Classic band.

They lost me at "Signals". Too proggy, and contrived to compete with Motorhead for my hard earned Quids.

For those who say that Rush of the 1990s and 2000s are just as good, well, you decide. I miss the old Rush. Lifeson using his Steel guitar on this song on "All the World's A Stage" absolutely classic.

Aamazing song. anyone noticed that the guitar sounds like "You Never Give Me your Money" by the Beatles.

@JetConvoy A stp song from around 93 or 94, forgot the title had ripped the basic rythm structure from this.

And how was a song like this not picked up by radio stations at the time ?????????
It had everything, it was heavy and had great musicianship, yet was melodic, had emotion, and even a slight hook. Rush has been so grossly overlooked and treated unfairly by the mainstream.
TitaniumByFire 1 year ago
@TitaniumByFire yeah, but that made them more special to us,didn't it?

Alex's electric tone on this one is bananas. Just the right amount of phaser. By the way does anyone know what kind of phaser he uses on this one?

clintbronson5...those days are still fresh in San Antonio, at 5:45 a.m. ...as are other great Rush songs...in fact going to see Rush tonight at AT&T Center, 7:30 p.m. ...so there still burns a lot of rope here, especially during 'A Passage to Bangkok'!!!!!
